The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle rollover late Saturday evening. A vehicle driven by Diego Vasquez of Decatur, Illinois, was traveling south on 360th Avenue and 180th St intersection when he fell asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle continued through the intersection, struck a fence, and rolled one time, landing right side up with no air bag deployment. Estimated damage is $8000. The driver was not harmed and was given a ride to a hotel by Dunkins towing.

Carl Hellweg
Carl Aloysious Hellweg, 82, of Houghton, Iowa, passed away at 2:25 a.m. Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born on July 1, 1942, in Houghton, the son of Aloysious and Marie (Pomberg) Hellweg. On December 1, 1962, he married LaVina Rauenbuehler at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years: LaVina; children: Daniel (Amy) Hellweg of Mt. Hamill, Iowa, Carla (Tom) Steffensmeier of West Point, Iowa, Deb (Marty) Moeller of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Cathy (Scott) Stuecker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Blake, Connor, Bailey, Dan, Jenny, Nick, Steven, Mitchell, Makenzie, Ashlyn, Taylor; fifteen great-grandchildren: Ruby, Rose, James, Kathleen, Carly, Teddy, Preston, Leo, Hank, Hazel, Maggie, Layne, Cade, Cael, Drew; siblings: Alvera (Gene) Merschman, Lucille Olson and brother-in-law: Carl (Maryann) Rauenbuehler. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Clarice Abolt, Rose Mary Cash and granddaughter-in-law: Lori Steffensmeier.
Carl was a graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed farming, puzzle books, watching Westerns, playing and coaching baseball in his younger years and talking about old times. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and loved watching their games. Carl was quick witted and always had a smart comeback.
His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.
Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton.
Memorials have been established in his memory for Houghton Fire and Rescue or Holy Trinity Catholic Schools.

Arlene Frank
Arlene J. Frank 95, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Park Place Elder Living Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Arlene was born on October 8, 1928, in Henry County, the daughter of Carl and Dottie (Cooper) Wagner. She was united in marriage to Lewis Frank Jr., on December 24, 1946, he preceded her in death on June 5, 2014. Arlene worked at the Stockport Locker, worked in the kitchen at the Keosauqua Hospital, helping with nutrition and later in the cafeteria of Iowa Wesleyan College.
She is survived by her children, Steven Frank of Littleton, Colorado, Dennis Frank of Columbia, Missouri, Marcalan Frank of Mt. Pleasant, Shirley Fitzer of Colorado Springs, Ernest Frank and Susan Frank both of Mt. Pleasant, along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis, two sons, Leonard Frank, James Frank, one grandson, one granddaughter, and her three brothers, Virgil Wagner, Chester Wagner and Leonard Wagner who was killed during WWII.
Private family services will be held. A memorial in her memory has been established. According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Victim Charged Following Late Night Attempted Murder
On September 10th, at approximately 11:42 p.m., a victim arrived at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Emergency Room with numerous stab wounds. The victim advised that he had driven himself to the hospital after being stabbed with a knife at a residence in Ottumwa. The victim was identified as Demetric Alexander Edwards, age 32, of Ottumwa. Edwards did provide a statement to police on what happened to him on this night. Edwards was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of his injuries.
Police identified the residence that this assault took place was located at 221 East Golf, in Ottumwa. Police secured this residence and obtained a search warrant to search for additional evidence and document the scene.
On Thursday, September 12, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Ottumwa Police arrested Joseph Michael Lewis, age 62, of 221 E. Golf for the following charges:
- Attempt to Commit Murder, a Class “B” Felony.
- Assault While Participating in a Felony, a Class “C” Felony
- Willful Injury Resulting in Serious Injury, a Class “C” Felony
- Going Armed With Intent, a Class “D” Felony
Lewis is being held in the Wapello County Jail with no bond being set at this time.
