Mary Chapuis

Mary Jean Chapuis went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 26, 2024 at the age of 85.  Mary was born Mary Jean Davis in Ottumwa, Iowa, August 12, 1938, to Lewis and Bessie Davis.

Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Dan) Morrow of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; son, Scott (Lou Ann) Chapuis of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; granddaughters, Beth Chapuis and Rachel (Ben) Blagg; grandsons, Matthew Morrow, Jonathan Morrow, Josh (Nadine) Chapuis; and four great-grandchildren, Colton, McKenzie and Callie Blagg, and Ellianna Chapuis.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her parents, and many siblings.

After spending her very early years in Packwood, the Davis family moved to a small farm near Libertyville, Iowa where Mary grew up and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1955.  She and Dick were married October 23, 1955 and she continued her farm life as Dick’s wife.  Dick was Mary’s high school sweetheart and their love strengthen as they moved to the Chapuis family farm in Stockport where they raised their two children.  Known to all as a sweet and loving lady, Mary worked alongside Dick on the farm and in their church where Dick taught Sunday School and Mary could be seen doing whatever was needed behind-the-scenes. Together they hosted Bible studies in their home, missionaries on furlough, high school youth groups and were original founders of the annual Oakland Mills Bible conference.

Mary was famous for her homemade chocolate-chip cookies, homemade ice cream and hand-pulled cinnamon and wintergreen taffy. Until her last day, nothing could make her eyes light up like the words: ‘chocolate’ or ‘ice cream’!  Quiet and mild tempered, Mary also had a silly side, which most often was observed during the Davis Family Reunions. Cards, Dominoes and board games were also a favorite, but especially Mary loved her children and grandchildren. Whenever one was coming for a visit, her kitchen counter would be found loaded with snacks, treats and desserts of all kinds.

Mary loved all things floral.  She favored pink or purple blooms, and these could often be seen adorning her home both inside and out. Countless hours she would spend in her garden and yard where she tended her flowers and could tell you the name of each and every one.

A dear friend to many, Mary demonstrated how to lead through serving, and how to have a vital relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She and Dick never shied away from hard work and always jumped in when help was needed, whether at church, in the community or for friends. “She was a true treasure.”  “She was a real mom to me.”  “She taught me how to (make cookies; freeze corn; cook homemade meals, etc.).”  “She spent countless hours helping our marriage.”  “She poured her life into our children’s lives” are just a few of the many comments that have been said of Mary in these recent days.

Mary’s deep faith carried her through all of life’s struggles and hardships.  Losing Dick in 1998 was indeed difficult for her and it was her faith that helped her through. She often asked, “How do people handle such things when they don’t know the Lord personally?”

Mostly, what Mary would want everyone to know today is that a personal faith in Jesus and His finished work on the cross is the thing that matters most in life – and in death.

Services celebrating her life will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2024 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by her funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. at Spencer Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to the work of Ethnos 360 (Formerly New Tribes Mission).

Online condolences may be made at www.behnerfh.com.

High School Postseason Baseball

The 2024 state championships are in the books and here’s how the matchups went down.

In Class 1A, #4 Lynnville-Sully’s four run dash in the final inning secured a 7-1 victory over #3 Remsen St. Mary’s. Carson Maston slashed a double and tallied three RBIs in the win. This was Lynnville-Sully’s second state championship in their program’s history.

Jack Vanfossan’s 5.2 scoreless and hitless innings with four strikeouts helped #1 Underwood capture their first state championship in a 5-1 win over #2 New Hampton in the Class 2A championship match.

If you wanted drama, then Class 3A provided it as #3 North Polk and #4 Bishop Heelan entered the final inning tied at four. Chase Fjelland ended up being the hero for the Comets with a walk-off RBI single to win the game 5-4. It was North Polk’s second state championship in the past decade.

#1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy had been the squad to beat the entire year in Class 4A and #6 Dowling Catholic was looking for one last upset to clinch the title; instead, the Cougars busted the game open by scoring the first five runs of the game to go on to win 7-3. Owen Hutchinson notched two RBIs for Kennedy in the win. The Cougars claimed their second state title in their program’s history.

High School Postseason Softball

Classes 3A, 2A, and 1A concluded their state tournament brackets yesterday and here’s how everything went down.

The Class 3A state championship was high scoring but never in doubt as #2 Williamsburg defeated #4 Assumption 12-9. Taylor Sanchez smashed a home run and tallied five RBIs in the win. The Raiders have now won back-to-back state championships.

#3 Wahlert Catholic handled #1 Benton in the 3rd place match with a 7-1 victory.

For Class 2A, #1 Van Meter had loss only one game all season but found themselves down 3 to 1 to #3 Audubon entering the bottom of the 5th inning. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs found four runs between the 5th and 6th innings to win 5-3. Mady Schnell crushed a two-run homer in the win. Van Meter has now won two state championships.

#7 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont drubbed #4 East Marshall 14-2 to claim 3rd place.

Heartbreak city once again in Class 1A as #6 Sigourney put up two runs in the top of the 7th inning to eventually go on to beat #1 Martensdale-St. Marys 3-2 and for the second year in a row the Blue Devils fell in the championship game. Carly Goodwin finished her excellent season for Sigourney with a solo home run and a complete game win with eight strikeouts. It was Sigourney’s first state championship.

Lastly, #7 Southeast Warren capped off their season with a 12-8 extra innings victory over #4 St. Edmond to grab 3rd place. Emma Masner smacked a home run to finish the game with four RBIs.

High School Softball

A trio of teams, which include the best players from all over the state of Iowa, have been created to participate in a All-Star weekend at the Waukee Softball Complex tonight with West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Logan Kelley playing for the white team.

Kelley provided the power to the Falcon squad with seven home runs and 42 RBIs to go along with her 20 doubles and two triples. Her 0.481 average, 0.553 on-base percentage, and 0.906 slugging percentage all led the team.

The white team will compete in two games with game one at 4 pm against the red team and another game at 6 pm against the blue team.

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees fell to the Normal CornBelters last night 16-6. Skyler Agnew led the Bees with a grand slam in the loss. The Bees will host the CornBelters in a doubleheader tonight with game one at 5 pm.

The Clinton LumberKings attempted the comeback against the Chillicothe Paints last night but ultimately fell 3-2 in front of the home crowd. Prep Softball: All-Southeast Teams for 2024

Prep Softball- Two of the five champions have already been crowed for the 2024 Iowa High School Softball State Tournaments with the final three to be determined today, now seems as good as time as any to talk about the All-District Teams for the season.

Class 1A

The Southeast district named junior Emily Ross from Holy Trinity Catholic, senior Ada Boysen of Wapello, and Lilly Barre and Payton Brun of Highland to the team.

Emily Ross had a fantastic season at the plate with a 0.519 batting average to go along with a 0.581 on-base percentage and an 0.815 slugging. The junior slugged two home runs to go along with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs, which all led the Crusaders.

Wapello ended up a game short of the state tournament, losing 2-1 in extras to Sigourney—the team attempting to upset Martensdale-St Marys in the championship game tonight. A big reason for their success was the pitching prominence of Ada Boysen.

The senior started 28 games this season, achieving a 19-9 record with a 1.45 ERA to go along with 321 strikeouts, while keeping a WHIP of 0.77 from the circle. Boysen also hit for an average of 0.406 with eight triples, three home runs, 39 RBIs, and took 17 bases—all best on the team.

Highland’s season also came to an end against Sigourney in a close 2-1 final. Payton Brun batted 0.458 in her senior campaign with two home runs and 29 RBIs. The Huskies will be excited to have junior Lilly Barre return with her three triples, two home runs 16 RBIs, to go along with her 0.366 batting average and 0.521 on-base percentage.

Class 2A

Van Buren County’s Ashlynn Huff was the lone sophomore to make the Southeast All-District squad and Lily Coil of Columbus also made the team.

Huff hit an otherworldly 0.512 batting average with a 0.589 on-base percentage. She led the Warriors with 32 runs and tallied 13 RBIs of her own.

Coil played in nine less games but made her mark with a slash line of 0.623/0.706/0.887 leading her to finish second on the team in RBIs with 21, while tying for the team lead in doubles with 10 and leading the team in triples with two. She also stole 15 bases.

Additionally, the junior also posted a 2.95 ERA with 59 strikeouts in her 10 appearances.

Class 3A

There was plenty of local talent represented in the Southeast All-District team with seven local players making the squad.

For Central Lee, senior Shanna Buford and sophomore Kenna Sandoval claimed a spot. This slugging duo got the Hawks into the top 15 and were a game away from punching their ticket to the state tournament.

Sandoval led the team with a slash line of 0.588/0.634/1.021 while crushing seven home runs, 19 doubles, one triple, and 44 RBIs. Buford led the team with 20 doubles, five triples, eight home runs, and 51 RBIs. The senior hit 0.518 with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Mediapolis’ Payton Harris, an 8th grader, made the team. Despite just being an 8th grader, Harris led the team with a 0.541 batting average and a 1.016 slugging percentage. Harris clobbered four home runs, three triples, and 11 doubles for 18 RBIs.

Bella and Leighton Salazar helped Washington finish with one of their best records in school history, earning them a spot on the team. Last year’s CO-SEC Player of the Year, Leighton, turned in another stellar year with a team leading slash line of 0.524/0.592/0.651. The sophomore also tabbed 10 doubles with 29 RBIs. She was also a kleptomaniac on the base path with 36 steals.

Bella was the ace for the squad with a 13-8 record, totaling 100 strikeouts for a 2.67 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. She also finished second on the team with 37 RBIs.

Lastly, seniors Logan Kelley and Lauren Krieger for West Burlington/Notre Dame claimed a spot for the Falcons. Kelley provided the power to this Falcon squad with seven home runs and 42 RBIs to go along with her 20 doubles and two triples. Her 0.481 average, 0.553 on-base percentage, and 0.906 slugging percentage all led the team.

Kelley will also be playing for the White Team tomorrow at the Waukee Softball Complex for the 2024 All-Star showcase.

Krieger ranked second on the team in just about every offensive category with 13 steals, a 0.462 average, and 0.548 on-base percentage. The senior also slapped seven doubles and two home runs to the tune of 21 RBIs.

Class 4A

Lastly, Burlington’s Saydee Plummer, the SEC Player of the Year, earned a spot on the Southeast All-District team. The senior led the team from the circle and at the plate. Plummer posted a 15-2 record with 178 strikeouts and an ERA and WHIP of 0.78 and 0.58, respectively.

Plummer also batted 0.413 for the season with an on-base percentage of 0.518. She belted three home runs and tabbed 16 RBIs.

High School Postseason Baseball

Championship Friday is now set after Class 2A and Class 4A finished their semifinal matchups last night and while Wednesday’s semifinals featured only upsets, last night kept the status quo, generally.

In Class 2A, #4 Chariton did provide #1 Underwood a scare after putting up five runs in the first half frame, which included two errors and a two RBI double by Keagan Evans. The Eagles struck in the 3rd inning after a couple errors allowed two runs to score, 5 to 2.

The Chargers responded with two runs of their own in the next half-inning to take a 7 to 2 lead. Underwood’s Ryker Adair had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 6th inning to win 8-7.

On the bottom half of the bracket, #2 New Hampton struck gold in the 3rd inning, scoring all seven of their runs eventually going on to win 7-3. Jaxon Eckley went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and got the win on the mound for his three innings of work, tabbing a strikeout.

Class 4A had similar storylines to Class 2A as #4 Johnston kept things interesting against #1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, scoring six runs in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game at 7.

The Cougars needed one swing of the bat as Ty Donels swatted a solo home run for his second RBI of the game to win 8-7.

#3 Iowa City High ran into Cole Southard, who pitched a gem of a game for #7 Dowling Catholic; pitching all 7 innings, allowing a run on five hits and fanning eight in the win.

Class 1A will begin championship Friday with first pitch at noon with #3 Remsen St. Mary’s looking for back-to-back titles going against #4 Lynnville-Sully.
