The Nikes claimed the Southeast Iowa Super Conference south regular season title with a perfect conference record and an overall record of 24-3. The offense has been elite as their team batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging ranks 4th, 7th, and 3rd in the state. Additionally, their team ERA of 1.84 ranks 8th in the state.

High School Softball

New London had their senior night spoiled last night in a back-and-forth affair that ended with Mt. Pleasant coming out on top 11-8. Errors vexed New London for the entire contest with their sixth error leading to a two-out rally in the 6th inning that saw Izzy Sloat, Keagyn Coleman, Abigail Shelangowski, and Kynlee White each slap a single to eventually give the Panthers an 11 to 5 lead.

However, New London would not go down without a fight as Lena Nelson, Ruby Myers, and Lillie Gallup each tabbed an RBI in the bottom of the 7th inning, but Myah Starr put an end to the rally as she finished with four strikeouts in the complete game win. Chaley Cook led the Panthers with three RBIs.

Mt. Pleasant will take on Holy Trinity Catholic tonight at 5:30 pm at home.

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on New London tonight at 5:30 pm on the road.

Payton Harris started off the scoring with a two-RBI double for Mediapolis, but Central Lee’s stout offense crushed the Bulldogs last night 12-2. The Hawks will travel to Burlington tomorrow, June 3rd, for a doubleheader with game one at 5 pm.

Mediapolis will compete in a doubleheader on Monday, July 8th, against Davis County on the road with game one at 5:30 pm.

West Burlington competed against Van Buren County and Holy Trinity Catholic last night and swept the night with a 7-6 win against the Warriors and a 10-0 shellacking of the Crusaders.

Lyndsey Kelley swatted a three-run homer for the Falcons against Van Buren County, while Ali Pedretti smacked a double for three RBIs for the Warriors. Shona Andersen and Lacie Felkins each grabbed two RBIs against the Crusaders.

West Burlington will square off against Fort Madison tonight at 5:30 pm on the road.

Sunday Afternoon Field Fires Separated by Mere Minutes

There were multiple field fires in our area on Sunday afternoon.

Just after 2:00pm on Sunday, there was a field fire in the 3300 block of Franklin Avenue in Salem. Multiple first responders attended to the scene, including, but not limited to, Salem Fire and Rescue and the Henry County Sheriff’s office.

Less than 10 minutes later, there was a fire in Mount Pleasant in the 2600 block of Dakota Avenue. The Mount Pleasant Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a good reminder to keep an eye on your controlled burns, especially on windy days.

Elgar and Helman Selected as Co-Chairs of Henry County Democratic Party

The Henry County Democratic Party Central Committee met and selected Mary Elgar of Mt. Pleasant and Dave Helman of rural Salem to serve as co-chairs of the local party.

Mary Elgar served as chair for ten years  during the legislative career of Tom Vilsack and the 1998 Vilsack campaign for Governor.  Elgar also served on the Democratic State Central Committee during this ten-year period. Helman served as chair from 2004 to 2013.  He was also honored by being chosen as 2nd Congressional district “Chair of the Year” in 2013.

Both have led the local party during multiple Presidential Caucus campaigns and have assisted candidates in their campaigns for local and state office.  They are proud of their good working relationship with the Henry County Auditor’s Office which manages elections for Henry County voters.

Elections were also held for several other leadership positions. Lois Roth and Aaron Williamson were elected as Vice-Chairs.  Pat Richenberger and Matt Mitchell will serve as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively.

In the coming weeks the new officers will be reaching out to Henry County voters- asking them to join in preparing for the fall election.   Several events, including an organization rally, are being planned for this summer.
