The Mount Pleasant Family Aquatic Center will open permanently for the season on Friday, May 31st after a soft open on Memorial Day. They will be open from 12-1p for a lap swim each day, with open swim from 1-7pm, Monday through Sunday. The daily fee is $3.50 for ages 4-15, and $4 for 16 and up. You can purchase a pass or ticket book at 307 E Monroe Street in Mount Pleasant between 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. Passes are $75 for an individual and double that for a family. Ticket books costs $30 for 10 tickets or $60 for 25.
Residence Deemed a “Total Loss” Following Devastating Fire in Burlington
On May 25th, 2024, at 10:28 PM, the Burlington Fire Department was dispatched for black smoke and flames coming from the residence located at 415 Peasley St. Burlington. They arrived 4 minutes later to find heavy fire showing from the rear of the two-story residence.
415 Peasley St. is owned by Dennis Wilson Revocable Trust and was vacant at the time of the incident. The residence is insured and considered a total loss.
Burlington Fire Department was assisted by West Burlington Fire Department, Danville Fire Department, Alliant Energy and Gas, and the Burlington Police Department. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries, and the last unit cleared the scene at 1:27am.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Burlington Fire Department and Burlington Police Department.

Mt. Pleasant Records Just Under 15 Inches of Rain So Far This Season
There is a slight chance of rain throughout today and a 45% chance on Friday, and while this may upset some people who think we’ve had enough, weather.gov would disagree. The average precipitation in inches at this point of the year is 13.88. Currently, Mt. Pleasant is at 14.93, with the majority of that coming between April 1st and May 1st. The lowest rainfall total at this point was way back in 1956 at just over 4 inches, with the most in 1973 at almost double the 2024 amount, 28.30.

The Preserve Iowa Summit is coming up fast, which promises of Iowa history lovers from all over coming to Mount Pleasant to learn more about the town on June 6th-8th. High School Baseball
Central Lee will take on Burlington Notre Dame on Thursday, May 30th, at 5:30 pm at home.
Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow, May 29th, at 5:30 pm at home.
Mt. Pleasant will host Washington tonight in a doubleheader with game one at 5:30 pm.
New London will compete against Mediapolis tonight at 5:30 pm on the road.
Burlington Notre Dame will face off against Van Buren County tonight at 5:30 pm at home.
West Burlington will travel to Wapello tomorrow for first pitch at 5:30 pm.
High School Baseball Rankings
The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association updated their rankings and Burlington Notre Dame has ventured to the top spot on the list in Class 1A with a 3-0 start to the season. The Nikes have been stellar on offense, averaging 10 runs per game with Dylann Kipp bringing the power, swatting two home runs while batting 0.600 on the season. Jaxon Sadler has been the ace for this club with a 0.70 ERA through two starts.
Hillcrest Academy is also receiving votes as the Ravens are 1-0 to start the season. The young team will look for Seth Ours to step back into his ace role as the junior tabbed a 0.67 ERA last season. The two are set to meet at Burlington Notre Dame on June 17th.
High School Softball
Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Pekin tonight at home at 5:30 pm.
Mt. Pleasant will host Washington tonight for a doubleheader to start conference play with first pitch at 5:30 pm.
Van Buren County will stay on the road to start the season to face off against Pekin tomorrow, May 29th, at 7 pm.
Mediapolis will compete against New London tonight at home at 7:30 pm.
Central Lee will look to get back in the win column tonight on the road against West Burlington at 7 pm.
Holy Trinity Catholic will host Danville at 5:30 pm tonight.
High School Soccer
The girls’ state tournament will begin today and the boys’ state tournament will start tomorrow, May 29th.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association will provide free video streams of the quarterfinal rounds. The semifinals and finals rights are held by the Iowa High School Sports Network and they will charge streaming viewers for the games.
For the girls’ tournament, Class 1A will start the day off with Assumption facing off against Dike-New Hartford. Nevada will take on Hudson, Denver will compete against St. Albert, and Bishop Heelan will tango with Treynor.
Southeastern Community College
SCC baseball will face off against East Central Community College today in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division II tournament.
Prospect League
The season officially gets underway tonight for the league, but the Burlington Bees will travel to Clinton to face off against the LumberKings for an exhibition game tonight at 6:30 pm.

Cheryl Cooley
Cheryl Ann (Howell) Cooley, 71, of Morning Sun, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 in Elmwood Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Morning Sun Fire Department. A memorial has been established for the Iowa Donor Network in Cheryl’s name. Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com. Cheryl Ann Howell was born on June 20, 1952 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Henrietta (Wilson) Howell. Cheryl was a 1970 graduate of Columbus Community High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. On February 10, 1979, Cheryl was united in marriage to Drew Cooley in Morning Sun. Cheryl worked over 25 years as a dietary supervisor for the Wapello Nursing Home. Following her retirement from the nursing home, Cheryl began working at the Morning Sun Hope Have site home, retiring from there in 2020. Cheryl enjoyed her grandkids and camping at Cedar River Campground.
Cheryl will be deeply missed by her children, Mark (Brook) Cooley, Lisa (Jeff) Van Amerongen and Rich (Amanda) Cooley, all of Morning Sun; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Erin) Meek, Tyler Cooley, Abbie (Bryce) Cooley, Mason Cooley, Garrett Cooley, Mallory Van Amerongen, Mackenzie Van Amerongen and Presley Cooley; siblings, Willard Howell of Wapello, Linda Clemmer of Winfield, Joe (Carol) Howell of Columbus Junction and Janet Dickerson of Winfield; sister-in-law, Jill Cooley of Des Moines and several nieces and nephews.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Drew on August 22, 2012; brother-in-law, Dick Clemmer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Jan Cooley and sister-in-law, Joyce Howell.
