The College Football Playoff (CFP) is still expected to expand to 12 teams starting in the 2024 season, but the Pac-12’s future has tabled any talk to change the format of the 12-team plan. Washington State and Oregon State will be the only remaining members of the Pac-12 after this season and according to the NCAA bylaws, an FBS conference needs at least eight full FBS members, but have a two year grace period to satisfy this need.

The Pac-12 might look to merge with the Mountain West Conference; however, discussions would have to occur to decide if the Pac-12 would be considered a Power 5 or a Group of 5 conference, a difference of 60% CFP revenue.

Moreover, the current model to decide who makes the playoff is the six highest-ranked conference champions plus the next six highest-ranked teams. If the Pac-12 is no longer considered a Power 5 conference, then the model might change to the five highest-ranked conference champions plus the next seven highest-ranked teams.
