Car Flips in Washington – Man Miraculously Walks Away

There was a single vehicle accident in Washington on Friday, September 8th.

At 8:51am, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a Nissan Armada that had flipped over and off the road. The driver told bystanders that he had “no injuries.”

Upon arrival, the deputies found the man had left the scene of the incident. Witnesses told the sheriff department that he had hitched a ride with another man in a Ryder truck.

Towing was contacted and his vehicle was towed from the scene. Later information revealed that the owner of this vehicle is from Ottumwa, and he called the Sheriff’s Department three hours later to arrange a time to discuss the accident. Possible citations will be administered.

Mediapolis Man Arrested After Shotgun Blast

On September 9, 2023, at approximately 10:20 PM Des Moines County deputies were dispatched to 10852 Mediapolis Road in reference to shots fired.  Deputies spoke with the complainant who advised they heard a shotgun fired outside their residence and observed a blue truck leave towards Mediapolis.  They indicated the suspect to Christopher Vargason, age 28, of Mediapolis, and believed Vargason was shooting at them or their residence.

Deputies located Vargason in Mediapolis and spoke with him about the incident.  Vargason would eventually admit to firing a shotgun in the air outside of the victim’s residence in an attempt to scare them.  After further investigation, Vargason was arrested and charged with Intimidation With a Dangerous Weapon (C Felony) and Reckless Use of Firearm (simple misdemeanor).

Sports, September 9th

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant’s trip to Tipton did not go as planned as the Tigers came out on top 35-7 last night. The Panthers’ miscues from last week continued into last night’s matchup with a lost fumble and three interceptions causing the Tigers to jump ahead.

The Panther offense struggled to gain ground offensively as Cooper Coleman was injured midway through the second quarter ushering in Payton Walker to lead the offense. Mt. Pleasant did find the endzone in the fourth quarter when Jurha Turner took a tunnel screen 66 yards for a touchdown.

Walker earned the Coach Bennett Player of the Game for his work on offense and defense. The Panthers will attempt to capture their first win next Friday against Burlington in front of the home fans at Evans Field.

In other Class 3A District 4 matchups, Burlington took down Keokuk 18-13 behind Cam Horn’s two rushing touchdowns, Washington lost to Fairfield 23-20, and Fort Madison defeated Centerville 42-6 last night.

Mediapolis fell to Regina Catholic last night 45-7. The Bulldogs will take on Albia next Friday.

Lisbon’s 21-point second quarter was enough to push the Lions past Columbus last night 34-28. The Wildcats will take on Pekin at home next Friday.

Central Lee is now 3-0 on the season after sneaking past Durant last night 17-10. The Hawks will look to stay undefeated next Friday against Davis County.

Danville lost to Pekin 36-13 last night. The Bears will host Louisa-Muscatine next Friday.

New London fell to Iowa Valley last night 68-22. The Tigers will face off against Central City next Friday.

#2 Winfield-Mt. Union hosted a top five matchup against #5 WACO and after two years the Wolves got the better of the Warriors 34-8. Cam Buffington rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Abram Edwards added two rushing touchdowns of his own. The Warriors scored on an 18 yard touchdown pass from Clayton Miller to Louden Husienga.
