Girls’ Prep Basketball: Late Run Nudges West Burlington Past MP, Other Saturday Finals

West Burlington 56, Mount Pleasant 47

West Burlington’s 23-10 fourth quarter run proved to be the difference as the Falcons took down Mount Pleasant Saturday night 56-47.

Logan Kelley had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Falcons while McKenna Marlow chipped in with 13.

Abbey Bence finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Panthers held a four-point lead after three quarters.

Now 1-3 and off tonight, the Panthers will look to get back into the win column Tuesday in Oskaloosa.

Winfield-Mount Union 53, Van Buren 26

Bradie Buffington’s game high 18 points and 14 rebounds vaulted Winfield-Mount Union to an easy 53-26 win over Van Buren County late Saturday.

Jobey Malone added 13 points, while Keetyn Townsley had 11.

Winfield-Mount Union led 33-10 at recess.

The win kept the Lady Wolves perfect at 5-0.

They’ll battle Lone Tree tomorrow night at home with tip scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Prep Bowling: Mount Pleasant Back in Action

Muscatine — The Mount Pleasant bowling team, off to a nice start in 2021, will be back in the lane tonight when they travel to Muscatine for a triangular.

The Bowling Panthers will take on Washington and Louisa-Muscatine tonight in an intra-conference affair.

They’ll bowl at the Rose Bowl — not in Pasadena — in Muscatine tonight with first pinfall set for 5:00 p.m.

Prep Wrestling: ND’s Frazier Wins 150th, Cliff Keen Championship

KILJ –Mount Pleasant native and Notre Dame prep wrestler Blaine Frazier had a monumental weekend with a championship at the historic Cliff Keen Independence Invitational.

Frazier had the opportunity to earn a little revenge as he faced Green County’s McKinley Robbins, the same opponent who he lost to for the 2021 Iowa State Championship.

Frazier was able to end Robbins 41 match win streak with a 3-2 win.

Robbins is ranked No. 1 and Frazier No.2 in the latest rankings.

The win also was the 150th of Frazier’s career.

The Iowa football team will play in a New Years Six bowl game this year despite falling in Saturday’s Big Ten Championship game.

The Hawkeyes will battle Kentucky January 1st in the Citrus Bowl.

Kick will be slated for 12:00 p.m.

The Wildcats finished second in the SEC East and ended their year 9-3.

Iowa State Meets Clemson 

Iowa State has earned a berth to the Cheez-It Bowl. The Cyclones will meet national power Clemson in Orlando on Wednesday, December 29th.

Clemson closed their season on a five-game winning streak after getting off to an uncharacteristically poor start.

They will be without their long-time defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who has reportedly taken the head coaching vacancy at Oklahoma.

Kick for the Cheez-It Bowl is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.

Grand View Beats Lindsey Wilson, Advances to National Champ

Grand View outscored No. 1 Lindsey Wilson 14-7 in the second half as the Vikings advanced to the NAIA National Championship to be played in Durham, North Carolina.

Interestingly enough, it will be an all Iowa fixture.

Grand View will take on Morningside for all the marbles.

Former Mount Pleasant standout Brody McGhghy is a special teams ace for the Vikings.

Grand View will compete in its first national championship since winning the title in 2013.

This will be Morningside’s third appearance in the NAIA championship in the last four years.

The National Championship will be played Saturday, December 18th.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Vansickel Lifts Panthers to Saturday Win, Other Weekend Finals:

Mount Pleasant 73, West Burlington 53

Owen Vansickel poured in a game-high 25 points lifting Mount Pleasant to a 73-53 win over West Burlington Saturday night.

Vansickel finished 3-of-6 from three point land and made all ten of his foul shots.

Payton Hagans chipped in with 16 points while Dylon Hagans had 12.

Dewon Trent cleaned the glass with a team-high 11 boards.

Mount Pleasant outscored the Falcons 39-22 in the second half to pull away for the win.

The Panthers, now 1-2, will be off until Friday night when they take on Keokuk.

Winfield-Mount Union 62, Van Buren County 43 

Winfield-Mount Union jumped out to a 21-2 lead after one quarter as the Wolves stayed perfect with a 62-43 win over Van Buren County on Saturday.

The Warriors are coached by Mount Pleasant alum Trey Magnani.

Cam Buffington was his usual electric self with a game-high 30 points and 14 rebounds.

Konner Wade finished with 13 points, while Abram Edwards had nine points, eight boards and two blocks.

Van Buren County was led by Izaak Loeffler’s 18 points and eight boards.

College Wrestling: Iowa Dispatches Iowa State:

The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 13 Iowa State, 23-11, on Sunday in the annual Cy-Hawk Series.

The dual win was Iowa’s 21st straight overall and 17th straight against Iowa State.

The Hawkeyes won six-of-10 matches, earned major decisions at 141 and 165, and punctuated the dual with a stalling disqualification at 285.

Tom Brands is now 16-0 all-time against Iowa State.

The Hawks will be off for the next two weeks before returning to the mat December 20th in Destin, Florida in the Rofkin Duals.

Ginger E. Breitenstein

Ginger E. Breitenstein, 78, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison.

Born on February 25, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Wilford and Delores (Boyd) Gantz. On December 22, 1963, she married Larry Breitenstein at Union Presbyterian Church in Fort Madison.

Survivors include her husband: Larry; daughters: Shawn (Ken) Perkins of Bonaparte, Iowa, Rhonda (Bill) Jordan of Donnellson, Iowa; son: Darin (Casey) Breitenstein of Farmington, Iowa; grandchildren: Brittany McClure, Billy Perkins, Spencer Breitenstein, Richard Jordan, Kaitlin Jordan, Adrian Breitenstein, Sara Breitenstein; great-grandchildren: Landen Jones, Logan McClure, Cameron McClure, Weston McClure, Xander Breitenstein, Ryder Breitenstein, Lane Breitenstein, Sailor Breitenstein; two sisters: Valerie Schwartz and Terrie Hawke. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Ginger graduated in 1961 from Burlington High School. From 1963 to 2008 she worked for  the Sheaffer Pen Company. She enjoyed doing puzzles, coloring, visiting her sisters, babysitting and being with family.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Schmitz Funeral Home Farmington, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Schmitz Funeral Home Farmington with Reverend Ellis Andrews officiating.

Burial will be at Acklam Cemetery near Primrose, Iowa.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

Ken Reschly, 76, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, December 5, 2021, at his home. Funeral services are pending at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

Gary N. Davis

Gary N. Davis, age 77, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Olds, Iowa, died Saturday, December 4, 2021, following a lengthy illness.

 

General calling hours will begin noon Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from  4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.                        Private family graveside services will be held Wednesday December 8th at the West Chester Cemetery.  Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County.  Online condolences may be sent for Gary’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com

 

Gary was born June 21, 1944, in Montezuma, Iowa the son of Clifford and Nina ( McMains) Davis.  He graduated from Mid-Prairie High School.  On September 12, 1964 he was united to Dorothy Lampe at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wellman, Iowa.

 

Gary and Dorothy lived in Olds, Iowa from 1965 until 2004 when they moved to Washington, Iowa.  Gary worked at Blue Bird Mfg. in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, for 39 years where he was a Supervisor.  He enjoyed fishing with his friends and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.  Gary’s focus was always on his family and he enjoyed attending his children’s, grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s many activities.

 

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Davis of Washington, Iowa; son, Monte Davis and Jodie Milks of Washington, Iowa; son, Tim Davis and Rachel of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Kathy Shelman and Brian of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; daughter, Amy Drey and Charlie of Arlington, Virginia; ten grandchildren: Justin (Alisha) Davis, Zach (Shelby) Davis, Lindsey Davis and fiancé Travis Tedrow, Hannah Davis, Grace Davis, Bryce (Abbey) Shelman, Brant Shelman, Brianna Shelman, Mitchell (Emily ) Drey and Weston Drey; as well as nine great grandchildren.

 

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Lyle Davis and one sister, Erma Schimmelpfenning and her husband Leonard.
