James D. Conaway

James D. Conaway, 91 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died Friday, February 10, 2023 at the West Point Care Center, West Point, Iowa.  He was born April 13, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of John R. and Winifred M. (Murray) Conaway. He married Norma Jeanne Hyde, they had three children: Diane, Jim and Joy.  They later divorced.  Jim married Carol Jean (Powell) Burris on August 1, 1973.  She preceded him in death on May 17, 2003.  On April 20, 2007, he married Joyce (Keller) Burton.  She survives.

 

Jim’s father worked for AT&T, so his family lived in many places as he grew up.  He graduated from Hamburg High School, Hamburg, Iowa in 1948.  He attended Drake University on a football scholarship.  Jim worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, starting in 1950, and retired as Road Foreman of Engines in 1986.  He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Knights of Columbus, Elks and an endowment member of the National Rifle Association.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a pilot and flew float planes in Canada for fishing trips.

 

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Burton of Fort Madison; three children: Diane Saar (Danny Lasswell) of Fort Madison, James (Debbie) Conaway of Carolina Beach, North Carolina; Joy Calvert of High Springs, Florida; four step-children: Kenneth Burris of Cold Water, Mississippi, Connie (Russell) Boeding of Waterloo, Iowa; Cindy (Miles) Wellman of West Point, Iowa and Tony Burton of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister, Virginia Scott of Missouri; eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, and one sister Judith Schwery.

 

The family will meet with friends from 5:00 – 6:30 pm Thursday, February 16, 2023 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, with a Christian Vigil Service to follow at  6:30 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Friday, February 17, 2023 at Holy Family Parish, Ss. Mary and Joseph Church, Fort Madison, with Father Joseph Phung as Celebrant.  Following Mass his body will be cremated. Burial will be at Bucklin Masonic Cemetery, Bucklin, Missouri at a later date.

 

A memorial has been established for Holy Family Parish and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice, contributions may be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.  Barr Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the Conaway/Burton family and an online guest book may be found at www.barrmemorialchapel.com.

Dennis J. Fitzpatrick, 79, longtime Mt. Pleasant pharmacist, died Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Donna M. Wise

Donna M. Wise, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, February 9, 2023 at her residence.

Friends may call from 12 Noon to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 14 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday evening. . A private family funeral service will be held with Pastor Gary Van Nyhuis, Associate Pastor, Faith Christian Outreach Church officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

Donna was born June 26, 1940 in Kirksville, MO. She was the daughter of Francis Marion and Beulah Mae (Moore) Toney. She moved with her family to Burlington, IA in 1945. Donna graduated from Burlington High School in 1958. On May 10, 1971 in Burlington, Donna was united in marriage to Leslie A. Wise. Mr. Wise died November 3, 1993.

For over 20 years, Donna was a Production Supervisor of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown.

Donna was very active in Veterans Auxiliary Organizations. She was a member and served in every officer position of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post #2561 and the American Legion Robert Tribby Post #58. She served as a flag bearer for the Henry County Honor Guard. She served as the Department President of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary for the state of Iowa.

Donna collected and had a love for antiques. With her husband, she was an antique business. In her spare time, she loved to watch westerns, both movies and shows and read western novels. She also read and studied military history. A gifted seamstress, she made many quilts. Donna was also a cancer survivor, having survived several different types of cancer.

Those thankful for sharing in Donna’s life include her daughter, Linda Dodd of Bonaparte, IA; 2 grandchildren – Daniel Dodd and Jessica Dodd; 7 great grandchildren – Allivia (Colton) Moore, Trisha Shepherd, Jaxson Gallup and Tristan, Kaylin and Bradlee; and 2 great great grandchildren Diem and Dessa Moore;

Her parents, husband, sister Mary Calhoun, brothers Glen and Donald Toney, a granddaughter, Cassandra Dodd and a great great granddaughter, Nora Mae Moore, precede Donna in death.

Jean Steele, 68, of Mount Pleasant died Friday, February 10, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.  Funeral services are pending at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

State Qualifiers for Class 3A Boys’ Wrestling: The Dogs Looking to Run Wild at Des Moines

Prep Wrestling- District wrestling took place last night for all classifications to decide who will be attending the state tournament. To make it to state for Class 1A and 2A, a wrestler must finish in first or second place for their weight class and for Class 3A, a third-place wrestler will also qualify. Here are the state qualifiers from Class 3A for our local schools.

In Class 3A District 1, Fort Madison will have multiple Bloodhounds sprinting their way to the tournament as Noah Swigart won the 3rd place mast of Edgar Mhoon-Lopez of City High of Iowa City for the 120-pound weight class. Logan Pennock fought his way through the consolation bracket to win the third place match of Jeffery West of Davenport North by fall in the 126-pound weight class. In the 145-pound weight class, Nolan Riddle took 2nd place by no contest over Zach Fern of City High. Aidan Pennock also took 2nd place by no contest of Landon Bell of Liberty in the 152-pound weight class. Teague Smith and Isaac Thacher each won their respective weight class, as Smith won by a 6-5 decision over Armon Williams of Bettendorf in the 170-pound weight class and Thacher claimed the top spot in the 195-pound weight class by fall over Ronan Numkena of Bettendorf. Lastly, Daniel Sokolik placed in 2nd for the 220-pound weight class after besting Zander Glazebrook of Bettendorf by fall.

Burlington will have two wrestlers competing in the tournament as Saloman Cordero took 3rd place over Landon Rudd of Fort Madison by fall in the 182-pound weight class. Braxton Hutchinson will be the over Grayhound going to state as he claimed 2nd place over Kendall Kurtz of City High in the 106-pound weight class.

For Class 3A District 3, Ottumwa will have one Bulldog representative at state in Ashton Grace as he defeated Cale Nash of Clear Creek-Amana in the 2nd place match by fall in the 113-pound weight class.

The state tournament begins on February 15th and will run through the 18th at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. KILJ will have results throughout those days.

To make it to state for Class 1A and 2A, a wrestler must finish in first or second place for their weight class and for Class 3A, a third-place wrestler will also qualify. Here are the state qualifiers from Class 2A for our local schools.

In the Class 2A District 9 tournament, the state champions for last year, Burlington Notre Dame, will be sending six wrestlers to the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Carter West claimed first place over Emmitt Newton of Davis County in the 106-pound weight class. Kael Cook took 2nd place after falling to Cael McCabe of Fairfield in a 5-1 decision, but then defeated Kade Martin of Davis County to punch his ticket for the 113-pound weight class. C.J. Davis also took 2nd place as he defeated Rylee Moore of Keokuk in a major decision in the 120-pound weight class. Kaiden Dietzenbach took first place over Derrick Bass of Davenport Assumption in the 126-pound weight class. Isaiah Fenton also claimed first place in the 152-pound weight class over Jax Mosely of Centerville by tech fall. Lastly, CJ Walrath continues his dominant career by taking first place in the 182-pound weight class as he defeated Chase Diaz of Davenport Assumption by fall.

Washington finished with four wrestlers punching their ticket to the tournament with Aaron Boone winning the 120-pound weight class in a 3-2 decision over C.J. Davis. Caden Greiner claimed 2nd place in the 132-pound weight class over Deken Sorensen of Davis County. Chase Greiner took 2nd place in the 160-pound weight class in a no contest as he defeated Lyblie Chrstofferson of Burlington Notre Dame by major decision earlier in the tournament. Lastly, Curtis Stender won the 195-pound weight class over Sam Hash of Centerville.

Fairfield will have four Trojans competing at the tournament as Cael McCabe won the 113-pound weight class as mentioned earlier. Cason Miller snatched 2nd place in the 145-pound weight class defeating Bowen Davis of Mt. Pleasant in a 4-2 decision. Dre Smithburg defeated Parker Moore by fall earlier in the day to claim 2nd place by no contest for the 220-pound weight class. Brandon Brinkschroeder will by the last Trojan going to state as he defeated Aiden Plowman of Keokuk to take 2nd place in the 285-pound weight class.

Keokuk will have one wrestler going to the tournament with Tate O’Shea winning the 138-pound weight class by fall over Zach Westercamp of Fairfield.

In Class 2A District 12, Mid-Prairie will have one wrestler competing at the tournament as Terry Bordenave took 2nd place in a no contest for the 195-pound weight class.

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will have five wrestlers move on to the tournament. Dante Zuniga took the 145-pound weight class by fall over Jacob Youngbear of South Tama County. Triston Miller of the 152-pound weight class claimed 2nd place over Levi VanDonsalaar of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont by tech fall. Cole Storm also placed in 2nd after winning in a 6-0 decision over Cayne Hall of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for the 160-pound weight class. Kai Malone claimed 2nd place over Gavin Vesey of Williamsburg by no contest for the 220-pound weight class. Lastly, Russel Coil defeated Trenton Davies of Williamsburg by no contest to take 2nd place for the 285-pound weight class.

The state tournament begins on February 15th and will run through the 18th at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. KILJ will have results throughout those days.
