Sports, November 3rd

High School Football

The WACO Warriors will face off against Montezuma tonight, November 3rd, at home at 7 pm here on KILJ with pregame at 6:45 pm. The Braves are led by senior quarterback Owen Cook who threw for 270 yards and scored eight total touchdowns, seven of which through the air last Friday. While the Warriors will depend on Simeon Reichenbach as he tallied three touchdowns on the ground and one defensive touchdown in their matchup last week.

The other matchups to watch for in 8 man football are Remsen St. Mary’s facing off with GTRA. Lenox plays Fremont-Mills and Newell-Fonda goes against Gladbrook-Reinbeck. All of these games will be played tonight at 7 pm.

In Mt. Pleasant’s district, North Scott faces off against Waverly-Shell Rock and Iowa City Liberty hosts Carlisle tomorrow night.

Elementary Basketball Tournament

Mount Pleasant Christmas Holidays 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for 3rd – 8th grade boys and girls will be held on Dec 17th, 2022. For more registration details contact Coach Ronnie Ashton at 319-931-2896.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team scored the first win of the home opener double header last night when they defeated William Woods 70-57. The Tigers dominated on the glass capturing eight more offensive rebounds resulting in twelve more points on second chances. Isabell West led the Tigers with a double-double on the night scoring 24 points and collecting 11 rebounds, 7 of which were on the offensive end. Their next game will be November 9th at home against Mount Mercy University at 5:30 pm.

The men’s basketball team followed up the women’s dominating win with a dramatic 62-57 finish over William Woods to move to 2-1 on the season. With the offense struggling to make shots throughout the game, Coach Ashton talked about what he saw from his team to get the win last night. Allante Pickens led the team in points with 19 adding 8 rebounds and 2 steals to the stat line. Coach also mentioned how important having the crowd at Ruble Arena was for his team. The crowd will need to come out and support again as they are home again tonight against Grand View University at 7 pm.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete tomorrow, November 4th, at the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship with the men starting at 7 am and women running at 7:45 am.

The Tiger football team will end their season this Saturday, November 5th, on the road against Waldorf University at 3 pm.

Men’s and women’s wrestling gets underway at the Luther Hill Invitational this Saturday, November 5th, at 9 am.

This Day in Sports History

1989 – Lou Piniella is named manager of the Cincinnati Reds, replacing Pete Rose, who was banned for life for gambling on MLB games.

1996 – San Francisco 49ers receiver Jerry Rice grabs 3 passes for 45 yards and a TD to become 1st player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions in 24-17 win over the New Orleans Saints; finishes his career with 1,549 receptions.

Kay Townsend

Kay Townsend, 77, of Swedesburg and formerly of West Burlington, Mt. Pleasant and Champaign, IL, died Monday, October 31, 2022 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman, IA.

No services are planned at this time. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting with the arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to wwww.kimzeyfuneralhome.com

Ms. Townsend, the former Frances Kay Raines, was born March 11, 1945 in Champaign, IL. She was the daughter of Harry Max and Mary Virginia (Gribbons) Raines.

She moved with her family to Mt. Pleasant where she attended school and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1963. On July 24, 1965 in Missouri, Kay married Dan Joseph Townsend. The couple later divorced.

Kay worked at the former Vega Industries in Mt. Pleasant. She moved to Burlington and was employed at 7-11 and Wal-Mart. She moved to Swedesburg a couple of years ago.

She collected crackle glass and was a Denver Broncos fan. Above all, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two children – Dawn Hendrickson and husband Phil of Mt. Pleasant and Pat Townsend and fiancée Stephanie Bates of Castle Rock, CO; a brother, Tom Eugene Raines of New Mexico; three grandchildren – Jake, Brett and Samantha Townsend and a great grandchild soon to be born.

Her parents and former husband precede in death.

Steffensmeier Welding and Manufacturing to become a Weaton Company

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
