Ruth L. Wyse, 96, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Addington Place of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trenton Missionary Church with Rev. David Forrester officiating.  Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.  Memorials may be directed to the Trenton Missionary Church Missions to be used for mission work or to EveryStep Hospice in her memory.

Sandwich Chain Opening Location in Mount Pleasant

The Mount Pleasant City Council has approved a site plan for a Jimmy John’s. It looks like the sandwich chain, headquartered in Champaign, Illinois, will finally move forward with plans to open a drive thru only location in the other side of a two tenant commercial building on North Grand Avenue. The north side already has a tenant. Phase three of the development company’s plan is to continue south and will include more yet to be determined commercial development.

Terry L. Septer, 73, of Lockridge passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

 

According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant and no services will be held at this time.

High School Volleyball

Winfield-Mt. Union and Hillcrest participated in the Brink’s Bench-Fight Like An Iowa Girl cancer fundraiser for Lisa Brinkmeyer last night, the two teams wore shirts to commemorate the night. Keely Malone was also recognized for her 1,000-career assist, which she secured September 3rd against Cardinal. The Wolves defeated Hillcrest in straight sets: 25-3, 25-7, and 25-15. Melina Oepping and Bradie Buffington tallied six kills apiece, while Malone added 19 assists and 9 aces. Winfield-Mt. Union is now 13-5 on the season with their next game scheduled against Lone Tree tomorrow, September 15th.

Holy Trinity Catholic is back above .500 after defeating Mediapolis in a competitive match but ultimately in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-20. The Crusaders next game is tomorrow when they play West Burlington at home at 7:30 pm. The Falcons are 15-2 on the season and led by senior Sophia Armstrong, who has 140 kills on the season with a kill efficiency of 0.486.

New London’s next game will be against Mediapolis tomorrow, at 7:30 pm.

WACO will be looking for their tenth win of the season tomorrow, September 15th, at home against Pekin, the game scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.

Mt. Pleasant’s next game will be this Saturday, September 17th, when the Panthers compete at the Ottumwa Invitational.

High School Football

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers are at home this Friday to face off against West Burlington, who is also 0-3 after losing to Mediapolis last Friday. Jacob Richtman is top 10 in Class 4A for every meaningful passing statistic, while the Falcons are led by Travian Donaldson, who has over 300 yards rushing through three games. Tune into KILJ for the game, kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm, pregame at 7:15 pm.

WACO will face off with Iowa Valley this Friday, September 16th.  The Warriors are led by a pair of seniors in Isaac Oswald and Simeon Reichenbach, while Iowa Valley depends on dual threat quarterback Evan Kearney, who leads 8-man football with 30 total touchdowns on the season. This game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union tries to right the ship against HLV, and New London will celebrate homecoming against English Valleys. Both games scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Fort Madison will defend their home field against Washington, while Fairfield will travel to play Knoxville. The Bloodhounds are led by Aidan Boyer, who has tossed 457 yards and four touchdowns. The Demons will lean on talented senior running back Tayven Stuart.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Iowa Wesleyan Tiger volleyball team competed in the Jimmy John’s Classic September 2nd through the 3rd and Bethany Williams was named to the All-Tournament team yesterday. She finished with 14 kills, 6 digs, 4 blocks assists, 2 block solos, and accounted for 18 points through the 4 games. The Tigers will be competing in the UHSP Tournament in St. Louis starting September 16th and finishing up on the 17th, with their first match taking place at 5 pm against College of the Ozarks.

Women’s soccer faces off with Cornell College tonight in Mount Vernon at 5 pm. The Tigers are looking for their second win of the season, as they are averaging 2.5 goals a game.

Men’s soccer travels to St. Louis tonight to clash with the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis at 6 pm. They are looking for their first win of the season.

The Tigers football team will be at home this Saturday, September 17th, to play Finlandia University at noon. KILJ will be on the call with pregame set to start at 11:45 am.

1959 – The $32 million Aqueduct, operated by the New York Racing Association, opened.

1994 – It was announced that the season was over for the National Baseball League on the 34th day of the player’s strike. The final days of the regular season were canceled. Baseball owners had voted 26-2 in favor of ending the season. The result was a year with no World Series for the first time since 1904.

2003 – Jamal Lewis (Baltimore Ravens) set an NFL record for yards gained in a single-game when he gained 295 yards rushing. The Ravens beat the Cleveland Browns 33-13.

Winfield Avenue from Palm Avenue to Lincoln Street will be closed Thursday from 7 am to 8 pm for road patching.

Crews will be smoking Sewers in the area South of the Hospital Jackson to Saunders Park this morning, September 14th. They will then be working the area North of Washington St. to W. Saunders and Marion St. to White St. Remember if you see smoke or smell it let the crew know outside so they can help you determine where it’s getting in at. The smoke is not toxic if it gets in your house and will usually dissipate in 15 to 30 minutes. By opening a few windows and maybe running a fan it will clear up much quicker. Please remember if you get smoke in your house it will also be letting sewer gases into your house.
