Phyllis A. Conner, 91, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Henry County Health Center. Services are pending at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

New London

New London Varsity Baseball has improved to 20-0 on the season after a 10-0 win over Highland in 5 innings Friday night on Senior Night. Senior Dereck Santiago went 1 for 3 with a double with 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Senior Ryan Richey went 2 for 3 with a triple and 1 RBI. Sophomore Brendan Richey pitched 4 full innings allowing 5 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 3. Tiger Baseball will be back on the field on Monday night for a matchup on the road against Burlington Notre Dame. That game is set to start at 7:00 PM.

New London Varsity Softball split a doubleheader Friday. The Tigers defeated Hillcrest Academy by a score of 7-6 in the first game. Highland defeated New London in the second game by a a score of 10-0. Tiger Softball will be back on the field on Tuesday night for a 7:00 PM matchup with Van Buren County.

NBA

The Charlotte Hornets’ hired Steve Clifford for a second stint as the team’s head coach Friday. Clifford’s first run as Charlotte’s head coach was from 2013-2018. Warriors’ assistant coach Kenny Atkinson originally accepted the job but instead decided to stay with Golden State following the NBA Finals victory.

Authorities Release Name of Victim in Grain Elevator Accident

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of Tuesday’s grain silo collapse as Rickey Ryan Kammerer (age 30) of Winfield, IA. On June 22 at 1:15 PM Search and Rescue personnel located Krammerer deceased amongst the debris of the collapsed grain silo.

On June 21 at 8:08 AM the Yarmouth Fire Department responded to the Agri-way Grain Elevators in Yarmouth, Iowa for a grain silo that had collapsed.  Emergency responders were informed that two employees were in the immediate area at the time of the grain silo collapse and that one of these employees was unable to be located.

Emergency responders arrived on scene and immediately began rescue operations.  The collapsed silo was partially standing and caused structural damage to adjacent silos, creating an extremely volatile environment for the rescue and recovery.

 

Sports, June 24th

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Varsity Softball had a pair of games on the road against Keokuk Thursday night.

The Panthers were defeated in Game 1 of the night by a score of 10-0. Ty Alter pitched 5.2 innings in the loss while Bethany Drury went 2 for 2 with a double at the plate. It was Ty Alter’s first varsity start on the mound and Mike Beason tells KILJ that she “pitched very well for her first varsity start.”

Mount Pleasant won Game 2 by a score of 6-3. Ella McNamee was given the win on the mound, pitching 4 full innings, allowing 3 runs, none earned. Savana Walls went 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Addison Clark was 2 for 4 with an RBI as well.

The Panthers were defeated 10-7 in Game 1. Trevor Wellington was given the loss on the mound in Game 1, pitching 3 innings and allowing 7 runs on 4 hits with 8 walks and striking out 1. Wellington also turned in a 2 for 4 performance at the plate with a double and an RBI. Carter Amos had a double with 2 RBIs. Mount Pleasant won Game 2 11-6. Peyton Hagans pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 6 walks and striking out 4. Lincoln Henriksen had a triple and 3 RBIs. Carter Amos with a double and 2 RBIs.

Panther Baseball will be back on the field on Monday night at home for a doubleheader with Burlington. The first game is set to begin at 5:30 PM with the second at 7:30 PM.

New London Varsity Softball will have a pair of games tonight. The first being a rescheduled game against Hillcrest Academy from June 10th, this game will begin at 2:00 PM. The second game will begin at 5:30 PM as the Tigers will take on Highland.

Undefeated New London Tiger Varsity Baseball is set to take on Highland tonight. That game is set to begin at 7:00 PM and you can catch live coverage of the game on KILJ.

Winfield-Mt. Union

Winfield-Mt. Union Varsity Softball defeated Columbus by a score of 8-0 last night. Wolves Softball will be back on the field on Monday night for Senior Night against Highland.

Winfield-Mt. Union Varsity Baseball is back on the field tonight following a 11-0 loss against Burlington Notre Dame on Wednesday. WMU Baseball will take on Van Buren County on the road tonight, that game is set to begin at 7:00 PM.

Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball

Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball will host a 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament on July 4th at Ruble Arena on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Mount Pleasant. All ages are welcome from 3rd grade on through adult ages. There will be a DJ playing music during the event and concession stand availability. The cost to enter is $60 per team. Each team must have at least 3 players with a maximum of 4 players. Payment is required before the start of the first game. Checks can be made payable to Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball. Each athlete must sign a waiver of liability and complete a health information form prior to competing. That form can be sent via email (listed below).

This Day in Sports History

1922 – The American Professional Football Association took the name of The National Football League (NFL).

1952 – Eddie Arcaro became the first U.S.-born jockey to win 3,000 races.

1968 – Jim Northrup (Detroit Tigers) tied a major league baseball record when he hit two grand slams in one game.

1979 – Bob Watson (Houston Astros) hit for the cycle against San Francisco. On September 15, 1979, he became the first player to hit for the cycle in both leagues when he did it with the Boston Red Sox.

2003 – Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) became the first player to reach 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

Walter Wilt (final arrangements)

Walter Wilt, 79, of Mount Pleasant, passed away at home on Thursday, June 23, 2022, after a short bout with lung cancer.

Walter William Wilt was born in Mount Pleasant to Everett Dale and Irene Emeline Lee Wilt. Walter attended Mount Pleasant Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1961. In the fall of 1961, Walter joined the Army stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He spent six months stationed in Germany. He received awards for rifle sharp shooting and a good conduct medal AOM. Walter received an honorable discharge in the fall of 1964. He was a member of the American Legion.

In November 1964, Walter married Janice Darlene Calhoun, they later divorced. Walter married Winifred Boshart on May 6, 1972, in Wayland. Walter spent his working career as parts manager at Ford dealerships – Sheets Motors and Hines Motors. After retiring from Ford, Walter worked a number of years at Bezoni’s True Value sharing his fix-it talents and years of knowledge with many Mount Pleasant citizens.

Walter joined Pleasant View Mennonite Church in 1972, where he served as trustee for many years. He was a faithful member and enjoyed Sunday school class discussions. Walter raked the half-block lot every fall and spring and kept up all the needed repairs that arose. He could fix almost anything.

Walter’s favorite pastime was working on cars. He meticulously maintained all of the cars he and Wini owned. He owned a 1959 Edsel for 47 years and enjoyed going to Edsel Club activities. His 1968 Torino was a great source of pride. Walter loved Nascar racing, but only ever wanted the Ford cars to win.

In earlier years he hunted squirrels, rabbits, pheasant and geese with his dad. He enjoyed fishing in the creeks around Mount Pleasant. Most importantly, he loved and cared for his family.

Walter is survived by his wife Wini; two daughters and a son, Lisa (Dave) McDowell, Dale Wilt, and Tricia (Ben) Bender; four granddaughters and one grandson, Stephanie (Josh) VanTrump, Kelli (Kyle) Penfield, Michelle (Daryn) Parker, Daniel Bender and Annika Bender; brother Robert (Carol) Wilt; sister Mary Ann Martinez; mother-in-law Myndell Boshart; in-laws Doris and Robert Nelson, Rose and Art Lauer, Phil and Barb Boshart, nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and brother-in-law Frank Martinez.

Visitation will be held 1:00 – 4:00 pm Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Monday, June 27, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, rural Wayland. Military Rites will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. SEISO SYMPHONIC BLAST CONCERT AND FIREWORKS

The Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra presents their Symphonic Blast! concert under the direction
of Musical Director Robert McConnell. The concert will take place at the bandshell in Crapo Park on
Saturday, July 9th at 8:00 PM. Bring your lawn chairs, beverages, bug spray and friends to enjoy the
light classical music and amazing fireworks on the bluff of the Mississippi River.
SEISO will present music by John Williams, Leroy Anderson, Henry Mancini, local composer David
Sharp, and Des Moines composer Linda Robbins Coleman. Music from The Patriot, The Magnificent
Seven, Stars and Stripes Forever, Nina Never Knew featuring saxophone soloist Jason Edwards, and
the 1812 Overture among others. Admission is free.

Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
