High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team defeated a depleted Burlington Notre Dame team last night, 33-22. Defense was paramount in the contest with both teams tabbing over 10 steals. Abby Carthey led the Panthers’ scoring with nine points, while Kinsey Cameron cashed in nine points for the Nikes. 

Mt. Pleasant will host Burlington on Friday, January 16th, with game one at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm.

Fairfield split the night against Van Buren County as the girls’ team held off a Warrior run to win 43-42 after a buzzer beater was waved off, while the Trojans boys’ team fell to Van Buren County 66-65 despite 31 points from Ethan Bisgard. 

Fairfield will take on Pekin at home on Thursday, January 15th, with game one at 6 pm.

New London will take on Van Buren County tonight with game one at 6 pm at home. 

Winfield-Mt. Union was swept by Holy Trinity Catholic last night with the girls’ team losing 46-39 and the boys’ team falling 51-34. Layne Rung scored 18 points for the Crusaders as boys’ head coach John Hellige collected his 100th career victory. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to Lone Tree tonight with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm.

Danville will compete against Holy Trinity Catholic tonight with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm on the road.

Burlington Notre Dame will host Central Lee tonight at 6 pm.

WACO will travel to Pekin tonight with the first showdown at 6 pm. 

Wapello will tangle with Louisa-Muscatine tonight with the night starting at 6 pm.

Columbus will take on Hillcrest Academy tonight at 6 pm on the road. 

Mediapolis will contend with West Burlington tonight with tip-off at 6 pm.

Boys’ High School Basketball Rankings

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released their third edition of the official boys’ basketball rankings and a top ten win vaulted Burlington Notre Dame into the top three of Class 1A.

In a neutral site showdown, the Nikes clipped #7 Marquette Catholic 85-71 behind Shay Stephens’ 24 points and nine assists. Burlington Notre Dame is off to a 12-0 start averaging 77.1 points per game with a defense that is forcing 10 steals per game. The Nikes currently sit behind St. Edmond and MMCRU, respectively, in the top 10. 

High School Wrestling

The Fairfield and WACO girls’ teams competed at the Ottumwa Invitational last night and the Trojans claimed 12th place with 57 points. Samantha Lyons led the Trojans with a 1st place finish in the 170-pound weight class, pinning all three of her opponents in the first round. WACO’s Makayla Morrison collected a 2-2 record for the night. 

The Fairfield girls’ and boys’ teams will head to Oskaloosa for duals tonight.

The WACO and Mediapolis girls’ teams will compete at the Mid-Prairie Invitational on Friday, January 16th. 

The Van Buren County girls’ team took on Fort Madison last night in a dual and fell to the Bloodhounds, 45-28. Armony Adams, Mallory Brauns, and Rylee Caviness each won their match for the Warriors. The Van Buren County girls’ team will wrestle at a tournament in Centerville on Thursday, January 15th.

The Wapello girls’ team will compete at the Lisbon Triangular tonight.

The New London boys’ team will host a triangular with WACO and Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union in attendance on Thursday.

Mt. Pleasant will dual Washington at home on Thursday.

The Mediapolis boys’ team will hold a triangular on Thursday with Wapello joining the fray. 

The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team will travel to Pekin for a triangular on Thursday. 

The Van Buren County boys’ team will square off against Highland on Thursday at home. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will compete in the Cascade Tournament on Thursday. 

High School Bowling

Fairfield swept Burlington last night with the girls’ team winning 2,122-1,849 and the boys’ team coming out on top 2,512-2,254. Emma Cass led the Trojans with 366 total pins in the girls’ meet. Fairfield will face off against Davis County at home on Thursday, January 15th.

Mt. Pleasant will take on Burlington at home on Thursday.

Southeastern Community College

The women’s basketball team will travel to Southwestern Community College tomorrow, January 14th, at 5:30 pm.

The men’s basketball team will host Harry S. Truman College tomorrow at 7 pm.

College Basketball

The #19 Iowa State women’s team will play tomorrow, January 14th, on the road against Colorado at 8 pm.

The #11 Iowa women’s team will host Oregon on Thursday, January 15th, at 8 pm.

The Iowa men’s team will look to regroup on the road against Purdue with tip-off at 5:30 pm tomorrow.

The #2 Iowa State men’s team will square off against Kansas on the road tonight at 8 pm. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will have the call.

2019 – Houston guard James Harden scores 38 points in a Rockets’ 116-108 loss to the Orlando Magic; marks the 16th straight game with 30-plus points, matching Kobe Bryant’s NBA record streak. Additionally, Harden goes 1 for 17 from the 3-point arc, tying the record for most misses.
