Women’s College Wrestling: Sunlin Named HoC Wrestler of the Week:

Iowa Wesleyan sophomore Alaina Sunlin has been named the Heart of America women’s wrestler of the week.

This is the second time this season Sunlin has won the award.

Last Saturday, the Monticello, Iowa native kept her perfect record in tact, as she improved to 11-0 on the year at the William Jewell Duals.

She won all four of her bouts in the 101-pound weight class, with wins over No. 9 Baker, No. 13 Missouri Baptist, No. 15 William Jewell and (RV) University of St. Mary.

She won via Fall in 1:18, Tech Fall 10-0, Tech Fall 10-0 and Tech Fall 10-0.

Sunlin and the Tigers will wrestle next on December 30th at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.

Men’s College Wrestling: Wesleyan Sweeps Weekly Awards:

Caelen Shannon of Iowa Wesleyan has earned his first Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Wrestler of the Week award after a terrific showing at the Buena Vista University Open.

The 174-pound wrestler finished in fourth-place at the BVU Open with a 2-2 record at the event.

This season the Cedar Rapids, Iowa native is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in duals.

The Tiger men will be off until January 8th when they travel to Pella for the Central Under Armour Invitational.

Women’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Falls to DII Quincy:

Breanna Wendland finished with 20 points and nine boards while Kyla Moore had 18 and seven but it was not enough as the Wesleyan women were beaten 56-53 by Division II Quincy.

Trailing by just three at half, the Tigers kept the game close until the waning moments.

Brittany West chipped in with 10 points and six boards.

Beth Martin-Matas paced the Hawks with 13 points.

Wesleyan, now 9-3, will enjoy a two-week hiatus before coming back to take on Cottey College on December 30th at Ruble Arena.

The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.

It will also be broadcast on FM 105.5 and kilj.com.

Nathan Bloechl and Kent Bennett will have the action.

Men’s College Basketball: Quincy Bests Wesleyan in Rout:

Quincy jumped out to a 49-21 lead after one half and never looked back as the Hawks raced to a 99-51 win over Iowa Wesleyan last night.

Joey Brown led Wesleyan with 13 points and three rebounds while Victor Munoz added eight.

Jalen Stamps was the high-point man for Quincy, pouring in 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting.

The Tigers fell to 5-9 with the loss.

Wesleyan will return to regular season play this Saturday, December 18th as they take on Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The game is set to start at 4:00 pm.

Prep Wrestling: Busy Thursday of Action:

It will be a busy night of wrestling tonight with several area programs returning to the mat.

Starting in Fort Madison, the Bloodhounds will host Mount Pleasant and Mid-Prairie in a triangular.

Wrestling will get underway at 6:00 p.m. at the HoundDome.

In the Super Conference, No. 4 Notre Dame will travel to Wapello along with Columbus Community/Winfield-Mount Union for a conference triangular.

They’ll begin grappling at 6:00 p.m.

WACO will be on the road as well.

The Warriors, off to a nice start in 2021, will bus to Keosauqua for a Super Conference quadrangular with Louisa-Muscatine and Pekin and of course host Van Buren County.

Meanwhile in Mediapolis, New London and Cardinal will travel over for a Super Conference triangular.

If things break right, there could be a showdown of top-ranked wrestlers there tonight with Mediapolis No. 3 Quinten Aney and New London’s No. 1 Marcel Lopez, a recent commit to SIU-Edwardsville.

Similar to other sites, they’ll start at 6:00 p.m. this evening.
