Prep Boys’ Basketball: Mount Pleasant’s Late Rally Falls Short; Other Area Matchups:

Cedar Rapids Washington 72, Mount Pleasant 59 

Owen Vansickel scored all 16 points in the second half but the furious Mount Pleasant rally came up short as the Panthers fell to Cedar Rapids Washington 72-59 last night in a nonconference matchup.

Mount Pleasant, trailing by as much as 26 in the third quarter, trimmed the deficit to just nine in the fourth quarter before running out of steam.

Dewon Trent finished with 14 points and 11 boards, while Payton Hagans and Aiden Ashton each chipped in with 11.

The Warriors led 37-14 at the break behind 17 points from star guard Trajain Sain.

Mount Pleasant fell to 2-3 with the loss.

They’ll get back on the hardwood Friday night on the road at No. 5 Washington.

The Demons are 4-0 on the year.

Prep Girls’ Basketball: Panthers Fall to Benton

Emma Townsley poured in a game-high 18 points as Benton rolled to a 67-38 win over Mount Pleasant last night in a nonconference affair.

Andrea Lopreato paced the Panthers with 13 points, while Jadan Brumbaugh and Kenna Lamm each scored nine.

Mount Pleasant has dropped five straight.

They’re now 1-6.

They’ll look to get back into the win column on Friday night, when they take on Washington.

Prep Bowling: Panthers Split with Fairfield

The Mount Pleasant boys-girls bowling team split with each other last night, bowling at Flamingo Lanes in Fairfield.

The Trojans edged Mount pleasant in the boys’ bout, winning by 21 pins.

The Panther girls rolled to a monster victory in the other scrap.

Alec Payne bowled a team-high series 355, sinking a a 198 in game one.

Bethan Drury and Tori Hixon paced the Panther girls’ each surging with a series 342.

College Basketball: Brockington Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week:

Iowa State guard Izaiah Brockington has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after averaging 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds last week in wins over Iowa and Jackson State.

Brockington shot 65.2 percent from the field and connected on 3-of-5 three-point attempts.

Iowa State is 10-0 this season and ranked No. 11 in the latest Associated Press Top 25.

Brockington and the Cyclones return to action on Sunday, December 19th against Southeastern Louisiana.
