Prep Cross Country: Blint Leads Girls, Carthey Paces Boys at Hillcrest Invite:

Abby Blint ran 21:25.84 good for second to help lead the Mount Pleasant Panther girls’ cross country team to a fourth-place finish.

Mount Pleasant freshman Alexis Wagner finished fifth, she ran 21:57.78 for the Panthers.

Belle Meador, Jenna Gilmore and Jayden Housh were the Panthers next three finishers.

Washington won the girls’ side of the event — Pella, Regina Mount Pleasant and Fairfield rounded out the top-five.

In the boys’ race the Pella Dutch were crowned victors while Washington was the runner-up.

Mount Pleasant placed fifth.

Ben Carthey was the Panthers’ top runner, finishing sixth overall in 18:14.58.

Christian Bracht-Wagner went 19:24:06 for 24th.

Washington’s Lance Sobaski was the meet champion, ending up with a 17:12.19.

Prep Volleyball: Super Conference Super Slate Tonight:

It will be loaded slate tonight in the Super Conference as we inch closer to tournament time.

Class 1A playoffs in the area will begin October 18th.

Tonight, No. 1 (1A) Notre Dame will be back in action as they take to the road to battle Van Buren County in Keosauqua.

The Nikes are 27-6.

Another ranked showdown will take place at West Burlington when the No. 9 Lady Falcons play host to 1A’s No. 5 ranked Holy Trinity Crusaders.

Holy Trinity is coming off a sweep win over Van Buren County last night.

The Crusaders are 18-4.

No. 12 New London (16-11) will take on WACO tonight in a Henry County classic.

WACO has been red-hot, they’re winners for four of their last five.

College Football: Esquivel Named NAIA National Player of the Week:

Iowa Wesleyan freshman quarterback Gavin Esquivel has bene named the NAIA’s National Offensive Player of the Week, the institution has announced.

Esquivel is the first Tiger to earn national honors since Sierrah Garcia did in softball in 2012.

In Wesleyan’s homecoming win Saturday, Esquivel broke the school record for touchdown passes in a game with eight, a record that was held by Dustin Dewald.

Wesleyan will have this week off before resuming conference action on October 16th against Dickinson State.
