Prep Baseball: State Tournament Day 2:

The second day of the Iowa High School State baseball tournament concluded yesterday at Merchants Park in Carroll.

Class 2A Quarters were played yesterday.

Here’s a full look at the scoreboard:

Van Meter 9, Davis County 6

Unity Christian 6, Clarinda 2

Centerville 10, New Hampton 0

Camanche 18, Denver 1

In semifinal play it will be Van Meter and Unity Christian, while Centerville will scrap with Camanche.

Class 3A’s tournament will start tonight at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City.

College Football: Linderbaum Named to Outland Trophy Watch List:

University of Iowa junior center Tyler Linderbaum has been named to the 2021 Outland Trophy Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced on Tuesday.

The trophy is presented to the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman on offense or defense.

The Solon, Iowa, native was tabbed preseason first-team All-Big Ten and preseason first-team All-America by Athlon Sports. Linderbaum was also named to the Big Ten Conference preseason honors list, and the Rimington Trophy Watch List.

The Hawkeyes open the 2021 season September 4th hosting Indiana.

College Football: Drake Tabbed for Third Place in Pioneer Football League:

The Drake University football team has been picked to finish third in the 2021 Pioneer Football League standings in a preseason vote of the league’s head coaches, the league office announced Tuesday.

Drake received 67 points for a third-place nod behind Davidson (97) and San Diego (93).

The Pioneer League will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Championship.

The 2021 season gets underway Thursday, Sept. 2 when Drake hosts West Virginia Wesleyan and the rest of the league gets underway Saturday, Sept. 4.

College Football: UNI Picked to Finish 5th in MVFC Preseason Poll:

The UNI Football was picked fifth in the MVFC Preseason Poll and 11 Panthers earned preseason All-Conference honors, the league announced last night.

South Dakota State was picked to win the league, North Dakota State was picked second, North Dakota was third and Southern Illinois received the fourth-place nod.

The Panthers finished with a 3-4 record in the shortened spring season, but all four losses came against teams that made the playoff and the losses came by a total of 15 combined points.

They do return stellar quarterback Will McElvain, a Des Moines Lincoln alum who was coached by now Fort Madison athletic director Ben Fry in his prep days.

The Panthers open the season on September 4th on the road at Iowa State.
