Prep Volleyball: Holy Trinity Falls, Notre Dame Wins, New London Stays Hot, Other Finals:

No. 9 (3A) West Burlington 3, No. 5 (1A) Holy Trinity 0 

Sophia Armstrong had 15 kills, while McKenna Marlow added nine as 3A’s ninth-ranked West Burlington Lady Falcons rolled to a 3-0 sweep over No. 5 Holy Trinity, last night.

All three matches came down to the wire with West Burlington holding on for 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 triumphs.

Mary Kate Bendlage paced the Crusader front line with 10 kills, while Brooke Mueller chipped in with nine.

Kassi Randolph finished with 15 assists, four kills, seven digs and a block.

The win moved West Burlington to 26-2, while Holy Trinity fell to 19-5.

The Crusaders will play at home against Cardinal Thursday night.

No. 1 (1A) Notre Dame, 3, Van Buren County 0 

The machine that is the Notre Dame Nike volleyball team rolled on once again, sweeping Van Buren County with relative ease last night.

The Nikes started the evening with a 25-6 win and earned 25-21, 25-14 wins to complete the sweep.

Gabby Deery led the Nikes with 15 kills, Josie Bentz added 12.

Notre Dame improved to 28-6 on the season, they’ll welcome in WACO on Thursday night.

No. 12 (1A) New London 3, WACO 1 

New London stayed hot with a four-set win over WACO last night in Wayland.

Natalie Burden was the hot hand for the Tigers, with a match-high 16 kills.

New London dropped set three 25-23 before coming back in set four for a 25-12 win which clinched the victory.

The win moved New London to 19-11, while WACO slipped to 16-10.

New London will get their crack at West Burlington next, Thursday evening.

Winfield-Mount Union 3, Lone Tree 0

Melina Oepping had 10 kills and Bradie Buffington chipped in with nine as the Lady Wolves slid past Lone Tree for a sweep victory last night.

The win meant Winfield kept pace with the top of the leauge.

The Lady Wolves are now 18-10 overall and 5-1 in Super Conference action.

Mount Pleasant 2, Burlington 1

Mount Pleasant 2, Washington 0 

The Mount Pleasant volleyball team rolled to three wins yesterday in the first night of Southeast Conference Tournament play.

The Panthers dropped just one set and improved to 17-10 on the year.

Men’s College Golf: Tigers Finish 11th in Season Finale:

The Iowa Wesleyan men’s golf team finished their fall circuit yesterday with an 11th place marker at the Central College Fall Classic.

Trace White led the Tigers over the day tournament with an 88 and 81 respectively.

Brevin Wilson carded a day one 85, while finishing day two with an 86.

Nathan Cronkhite, Kenny Tucker and Mason Wills rounded out Wesleyan’s top-five.

College Football: Iowa’s Petras Named to Davey O’Brien Great Eight:

University of Iowa junior quarterback Spencer Petras has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 for his play in Iowa’s 51-14 win at Maryland Friday evening.

The award is the first for Petras, who is now on the midseason Watch List for the 2021 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Petras became the first Iowa quarterback to throw and rush for multiple touchdowns in a game since Brad Banks against Minnesota in 2002.

He’ll get his chance to shine in the national spotlight this Saturday when the Hawkeyes play host to No. 4 Penn State.

Major League Baseball: Red Sox Outlast Yankees:

Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Schwarber each homered as the Boston Red Sox took care of the New York Yankees yesterday in the AL Wild Card Game.

Nathan Eovaldi threw 5.1 innings for the Red Sox fanning eight.

Gerrit Cole took the loss surrendering three runs over just two innings.

Boston will now take on Tampa Bay in the ALDS.

The St. Louis Cardinals will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Wild Card Game in Los Angeles this evening.
