Gov. Reynolds Proclaims “Day of Prayer” in Iowa

DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, April 9th as a “Day of Prayer” in Iowa, urging Iowans to “unite in prayer” in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, inviting Iowans to participate in the 59th Annual Iowa Prayer Breakfast, which is offered entirely online this year.

“The power of prayer and faith in God is something that has guided so many of us in good times and bad,” said Gov. Reynolds. “We have all been impacted by COVID-19. Some of us have lost a loved one and others know those who are sick. Whether you are a nurse on the frontlines fighting the pandemic, a grocery store worker, the truck driver making a delivery, or someone laid off at home, this has been a challenging and stressful time. Let us join together and pray for our neighbors, communities and state.”

Thursday marks the beginning of the Jewish festival of Passover and also is the Christian holy day of Maundy Thursday which precedes Easter on Sunday.

“Normally, hundreds of Iowans would be gathering in Des Moines for the 59th annual Iowa Prayer Breakfast,” said Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg. “But because of COVID-19, that has been moved entirely online and made free of charge. The Governor and I encourage everyone to join us for that event to celebrate this Day of Prayer.”

More information on the Iowa Prayer Breakfast and registration can be found at www.iowaprayerbreakfast.com.

The text of Governor Reynolds’ proclamation is below:

P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS, our nation and world are suffering from a pandemic which has profoundly affected the well-being and livelihoods of millions of Americans; and

WHEREAS,  this health emergency has created fear and anxiety in the minds of thousands of fellow Iowans during this uncertain time; and

WHEREAS, our nation’s motto is “In God We Trust”, with America being founded upon Biblical Judeo-Christian principles and values; and

WHEREAS,  God’s word teaches us to “Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying”; and

WHEREAS,  throughout our history Iowans have found peace, strength, and unity through prayer to God in humbly asking for His strength during times of difficulty; and

WHEREAS,  prayer provides peace that surpasses all understanding and wisdom in times of crisis and conflict, turning us to God for His comfort and blessed assurance; and

WHEREAS,  God’s unconditional love by sending His Son, Jesus, to be Savior of the world is remembered and celebrated by Christians during Holy Week of Easter each year:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kim Reynolds, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim Maundy Thursday, April 9, 2020 as a

DAY OF PRAYER

in the State of Iowa and encourage all Iowans to unite in prayer and ask God to comfort and bless all severely impacted; to protect medical care workers, first responders and all who are serving during this crisis; to grant wisdom, courage and strength to our local, state and national leaders; and give us all the hands and hearts to be generous with our time, skills, and resources to serve our neighbors within and alongside the many churches, non-profits, businesses, and other organizations providing relief.

New London’s Christner Named Wesleyan Student Athlete of the Month:

The Iowa Wesleyan athletic department has named Morgan Christner (SR/New London, IA) as the March Student-Athlete of the Month.

Although her season was cut short, Christner was absolutely dominant for the Wesleyan softball team while in Myrtle Beach.

Christner went 4-1 in the five contests she started, all in Myrtle Beach.

She also led the SLIAC in total strikeouts, strikeouts per game, batting average against, and earned run average.

The right-hander pitched two shutouts and racked up 57 total strikeouts, averaging 12.21 strikeouts per game.

Wesleyan’s season was cancelled after compiling a 5-5 record.

Garza Tabbed Center of the Year:

University of Iowa junior Luka Garza has been named the recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.

The announcement was made by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Named after Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the annual honor in its sixth year recognizes the top center in Division I men’s college basketball.

He is the first Hawkeye to win the award and the third Big Ten player to earn the honor.

Last week, the 6-foot-11 center was the recipient of the NABC Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award.

Garza (740 points and 305 rebounds) is one of three Big Ten players to ever to total 740+ points and 300+ rebounds in a single-season (Purdue’s Glenn Robinson in 1994 and Purdue’s Joe Barry Carroll in 1979).

He ranked second nationally with 12 20-point/10-rebound performances, 20-point games (25); third in total field goals made (287) and points per 40 minutes played (29.8), fifth in scoring (23.9), 10th in 30-point games (5), 19th in double-doubles (15) and offensive rebounds per game (3.58), and 34th in rebounding (9.8).

His 15 double-doubles are third most in a single-season by a Hawkeye in three decades and the most since 2002 (Reggie Evans, 18).

Garza is the only Big Ten player to register seven 25-point/10-rebound performances in the same season in more than 17 years.

Iowa State Picks Up Commitment:

Iowa State has landed a commitment from Michigan prep athlete Robert Army.

The 3-star prospect is ranked 19th in the state of Michigan and 95th at wide receiver, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings, although he could fit in for ISU at defensive back.

Army had other reported offers from the likes of Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Pitt, Purdue and Syracuse.

Army is the sixth known commitment for Iowa State in the Class of 2021.

DNR investigating fertilizer spill in Henry County

The Iowa DNR is investigating a fertilizer spill on the east side of Mt. Pleasant near the interchange of U.S. Highways 34 and 218 .

The spill occurred about noon Monday after a Mt. Pleasant Liqui-Grow truck rolled over, spilling most of its 2,400-gallon load and some diesel fuel into the road ditch.

Liqui-Grow staff were able to recover about 400 gallons of fertilizer yesterday, but approximately 2,000 gallons reached an unnamed tributary of Heather Branch.

The company’s staff dammed the creek with sandbags and has been pumping up the high nitrogen fertilizer, trying to prevent downstream contamination.

DNR is on site, offering technical advice and testing water samples yesterday and today. Field tests show ammonia levels are high at the spill site, but so far there has been no sign of a fish kill.

DNR will continue checking water samples and monitoring the cleanup. The DNR will consider appropriate enforcement action.
