16th Annual Holy Trinity Invite Sees W-MU, Central Lee Crowned:

It was a different format this year, but the 16th Annual Holy Trinity Classic went off without a hitch.

Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the tournament was split into two pools, a northern pool hosted by Winfield-Mount Union and a southern pool hosted by Holy Trinity.

Winfield-Mount Union got 28 kills over three games by Jenna Buffington as Winfield-Mount Union rolled to a North Pool championship.

The Wolves took down Danville 21-3, 21-8, Wapello 21-18, 21-12 and held on to defeat Burlington 21-15, 21-19.

Melina Oepping chipped in with 13 kills for Winfield-Mount Union, who improved to 14-4 on the year.

Burlington dropped to 6-4, Wapello sits now at 7-9 while Danville slipped to 1-7.

Winfield will be off until Thursday when they host Mediapolis and Columbus in Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament Pool Play action.

Meanwhile in the South Pool yesterday, Central Lee kept their red-hot play up as they went 3-0 to capture the South Pool championship.

The Hawks defeated #1 (1A) Holy Trinity in three games 19-21, 21-14 and 15-6. The second loss the Crusaders have taken to a conference opponent in three days.

Central Lee stayed hot by cruising past Fort Madison 21-10, 21-10 and Keokuk 21-4, 21-15.

Holy Trinity went to three games against Keokuk, falling in game one 15-21, then rebounding for 21-10 and 15-9 victories. The Crusaders took care of business against cross-town rival Fort Madison 21-10 and 21-9.

Central Lee’s 3-0 night improved their ledger to 9-5, Holy Trinity slipped to 12-5.

Quiet Night of Volleyball Tonight:

With the Super Conference Pool Tournament coming up later this week, the Tuesday night volleyball slate is a little quiet around southeast Iowa tonight.

The contest was postponed from September 8th.

First serve at New London High School is set for 7:30 p.m.

Other super conference tilts tonight:

  • Morning Star Academy at Highland

The Trojans enter tonight 4-9, losers of eight of their last nine.

They swept Washington to snap a seven game losing streak this weekend at the Ottumwa Tournament.

Update-One Person Injured in Saturday Night Incident

On September 19 the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office of male subject with a head injury resulting from a motor vehicle accident in the 1100 Grid of Old Highway 34 in Henry County.  The Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Iowa State Patrol responded to the incident.  The male sustained a head injury requiring him to be air lifted from the scene. The accident investigation was handled by the Iowa State Patrol. The State Patrol was notified of the incident at about 10:30 pm. The patrol investigation indicates a passenger was on top of the vehicle and fell off. That individual was identified by the patrol as 18 year old Sawyer Carrasco of Mount Pleasant. Carrasco was airlifted from the scene and taken to University Hospitals in Iowa for treatment of head injuries. The patrol reports that a 16 year was driving the vehicle involved and has been cited for reckless driving.  Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee said he was notified Monday by a family member that Carrasco was in stable condition.

Another investigation was started by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office from the call into a juvenile underage drinking party.  From this three juveniles were charged and released to their parents for Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was assisted during this incident by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Midwest Ambulance, Henry County Ambulance, Mount Pleasant Fire, and Med Force.

Stand Off in Mobile Home Park

Sunday at 1:15 am Mount Pleasant Police were called to the mobile home park at 200 South Street.  Reportedly, a woman ran into a neighbor’s mobile home and then was dragged back out by a man, later identified as Chadley Yeakley of Mount Pleasant.  Witnesses said the woman told them about being tied up by Yeakley.  Both the man and the woman were found in another mobile home.  Officers were unable to make contact so they entered the home where they spoke with Yeakley who was barricaded in a back bedroom with the victim.  Evidently, he had a knife and would not let the woman leave. Officers talked to Yeakley for about 90 minutes before he finally released the woman.  However, Yeakley refused to drop the knife and surrender.  Eventually, he did surrender peacefully and was taken to the Henry County Jail.  Yeakley is charged with domestic abuse involving display or use of a weapon, kidnapping, willful injury an possession of a firearm by a felon.

Friday Night Incident at Homecoming Game

The investigation continues into an incident that occurred behind the bleachers at the Mount Pleasant Homecoming game.  Friday night at about 8:30 the police and Henry County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputies investigated a report that a male subject with either a pellet gun or a bb gun may have shot or shot at someone on the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex practice field.  Initially, it was reported that several people were hit and could positively identify the suspect.  However, after speaking to the witnesses officers were unable to find any actual victims.  The suspect identified by witnesses was verified by officers to be in another town at the time of the incident and at this time does not appear to have been involved.
