Mervin Lyle Raines

Mervin Lyle Raines, 95, of New London, died Friday, December 11, 2020, at New London Specialty Care.  He was born April 12, 1925 in New London to Homer Brian and Margaret Ellen Collins Raines.  On August 4, 1946, he married Darlyne Parsons in Lowell; she passed away September 24, 2010.

He was a graduate of New London High School, then served as a Seaman 3rd Class in the United States Navy during WWII.  Mervin was a member of New London United Methodist Church; a lifetime member of New London VFW Post 7641; the Chamber of Commerce; Veterans Memorial Committee; New London Lions Club; and New London City Council.

He and Darlyne owned and operated the Tastee in New London; he worked for National Cash Register and sold insurance and real estate; but he was most known and will be remembered for his 24 plus years as a car salesman in New London and the surrounding area, retiring in 1992.  In true salesman fashion, Merv never met a stranger and was a friend to all.

Survivors include his sons; Bradley (Elaine) Raines of New London and Mitchell (Mary) Raines of Anthem, AZ; six grandchildren; Kerri Menke, Melinda Bitting, Shawnna Lutes, Gretchen Buck, Carly Raines, and Victoria Raines; nine great-grandchildren; Jared Menke, Kourtney Menke, Matthew Bitting, Bren Magel, Zach Russell, Austin Kern, Raesa Lutes, Zoe Buck and Zane Buck; and two great-great-grandchildren; Bentley Bitting and Adelyn Bitting.  Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter Lettie Faye Warth and son Gregory Brian Raines.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held sometime in 2021.  Memorials have been established for New London School Athletic Department and New London Veterans Memorial Park.  Elliott Chapel, New London is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Beason Set to Be Named Panther Softball Coach

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

KILJ — Following Troy Mears’ departure as Mount Pleasant’s head softball coach the Mount Pleasant Community School District is set to approve Michael Beason as the next head coach of the program, the district has announced.

Mears had been the leader at Mount Pleasant since 2014, orchestrating multiple conference championships and trips to the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge.

Mears stepped down from the position earlier this fall.

Beason will inherit a group that finished last year 4-18, but does return a strong core of players including senior Grace Kelly and underclassman Emma Starr, Kylee Roen and Ella McNamee.

The appointment of Beason as head coach is expected to be finalized at the Mount Pleasant Community School Board meeting tonight.

The meeting is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the high school media center.

An opportunity to help your letter carrier

The United States Postal Service is asking for the cooperation of postal customers to keep walkways and mailboxes clear of snow and ice to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of mail.  This includes curbside boxes, Cluster Box Units (CBUs), and boxes mounted at other designated locations.

In order to deliver mail, our carriers need clear access to mailboxes. This is for our employees’ safety, as well as yours as you retrieve your mail.  Letter carriers are especially vulnerable to slips, trips and falls during the winter months and it is extremely important to keep walkways free and clear of snow and ice to help reduce the danger of a letter carrier suffering a serious slipping injury.

Postal employees make every reasonable effort to deliver mail in many difficult weather conditions. However, there may be instances when we are unable to safely deliver due to access concerns caused from winter weather.

Your help is deeply appreciated by your letter carrier and the many men and women working together to ensure you receive timely and consistent service.

Public Health immunization clinics changing to online check-in

Henry County Public Health is making it easier and safer to get your immunizations, especially with the enhanced COVID-19 safety precautions.  You can now check-in online before you come in for shots to help minimize the waiting room traffic and keep everyone safer.  Visit HealthyHenryCounty.org/immunizations or download the free Net Check In – Henry County app from the app stores. You can view the current wait time, check-in to get added to the list, and they will get your record ready and notify you when it’s your turn to come inside.

“We have times of the year when the waiting room is typically very full and this year we have been having people wait outside instead,” states Robin Poole, Immunization Coordinator. “We are implementing this now so we can get the process ironed out before the COVID-19 vaccine is available to the general public. This is one more way Public Health is working to keep you safe and best of all you don’t have to wait around!” It is important to stay up to date on your immunizations, but next time Public Health asks you to check-in online first.
