Order of business, regular session

NOTE:  The regular session may be conducted electronically as allowed by Iowa Code 21.8     Citizen comments:  Comments must be directed to the subject under consideration.  The presiding officer shall rule on the relevance of the citizen comments.  Citizens making personal, impertinent, or slanderous remarks may be barred by the presiding officer from further comment before the Council during the meeting.

 

  1. Call to order at 5:30 p.m.. (Note the time)

 

  1. Accept or amend the agenda. NOTE:  Due to the starting time of the joint meeting of the City/Trustees meeting at 6:30 p.m., Council may have to temporarily adjourn the regular session and then reconvene after the joint meeting.

 

  1. Open forum: A time set aside to receive comments from the public regarding city business.  The Mayor and City Council welcome comments from the public on any subject pertaining to City business, including items on this agenda.  You are asked to state your name and address for the record and to limit your remarks to five minutes in order that others may be given the opportunity to speak.  The Order of Business is at the discretion of the Chair.  No action will be taken.

 

  1. Discussion and action on the May 2021 Des Moines County Sheriff’s report.

 

  1. Discussion on an inquiry about establishing a special needs home in a R1 residential district. Action by council if needed.

 

  1. Discussion with a neighbor of 405 West Division Street regarding concerns of that property. Action if needed.

 

  1. Matt Walker, French-Reneker-Assoc.
  2. Review of culverts/no culverts installed in ditches located at 207 West Division Street and 400 West Cherry Street.  Action by council if needed.
  3. Discussion and action on Pay Estimate #2, Fye Excavating Inc. for Storm Sewer Improvements on Roosevelt Road.  Updates on this project.

 

  1. Update on the request received to open up the platted alley from North Elm Street to North Birch Street. Action by council if needed.

 

  1. Discussion and action on Resolution 2021-15, requesting funding from the American Rescue Plan.

 

  1. Discussion and action on Resolution 2021-16, authorizing the fiscal year end transfers.

 

  1. Discussion and action on Resolution 2021-17, handling of the funds received from GovDeal.com.

Daily Jail County

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Melanie Lynn Waterman

Melanie Lynn Waterman, 54, of Danville and Quincy, died Friday, June 18, 2021 at her sister’s home in New London.  She was born March 10, 1967 in Burlington to Samuel Herbert and Wanda Marie Getchell Waterman.  She was a 1985 graduate of Danville High School and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in LaBelle, Missouri.

Melanie worked many years as a CNA and in home health care in the Ft. Madison area and for twenty years as a CNA in Quincy up until the last few years when her health failed.  She enjoyed listening to music, loved children and taking care of people, and would give the shirt off her back to help someone else.  Melanie was a fun-loving Tomboy who enjoyed life to it’s fullest.

Survivors include her sister Christina (Jim) Consbrock of New London; two brothers, Tony (Niki) Waterman of West Point and Mike Waterman of Danville; one niece, Elissa Waterman of Burlington; one great niece; and one great nephew.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Jeff Abbey officiating.  Friends may call beginning at 10:00 am, until the time of the service.  Burial will follow at Jaggar Cemetery, rural Danville.  Memorials to help with expenses may be directed to Tina Consbrock at 611 N. Virgil Lair

Virgil Lair, 89, of Mount Pleasant died Saturday, June 19, 2021.  There will be no visitation or service.  The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Virgil and his family.

Prep Baseball: Mount Pleasant Loses Two Over Weekend:

Williamsburg 9, Mount Pleasant 6

Central DeWitt 13, Mount Pleasant 0

The Mount Pleasant baseball team suffered a pair of losses over the weekend, falling to Williamsburg and Central DeWitt in a pair of nonconference tilts.

Against Williamsburg, the Raiders took a 7-0 lead after two innings as the Panthers fell 9-6.

Mount Pleasant rallied for three runs in the 3rd inning but could not get over the hump.

Against the Sabers, Kaiden Muhl had two hits, a run scored and three stolen bases as Central DeWitt rolled to a 13-0 win.

James Adams pitched five innings of one-hit ball, while striking out five.

Stats were not made available for Mount Pleasant in either game.

The Panthers fell to 2-15.

Prep Baseball: Loaded Monday Night of Action:

Both the Southeast Conference and Super Conference have a great slate of games tonight, with action getting underway beginning at 5:30 p.m. for doubleheaders.

Prep Baseball: Postseason Assignments Released in Class 1A, 2A:

Postseason assignments for Class 1A have been released for the upcoming baseball playoffs and area teams will compete in Region 6 and 9.

College Football: Iowa State Lands Four on Preseason All-American List:

Four Cyclones have been named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-America team, the award committee has announced.

This year, Iowa State saw tight end Charlie Kolar, running back Breece Hall and linebacker Mike Rose all receive first-team selections.

Center Colin Newell was a second-team choice.

Iowa center and former Solon standout Tyler Linderbaum was a first-team selection, as well.

Assault Investigation

On June 17 deputies with the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 11912 DMC Hwy 99 lot 69 in reference to an assault. Deputies were advised that Michael Vincent Jagerson Jr., age 26, of Burlington, IA had walked up to a subject on the porch at that residence and assaulted him by striking him with his head. The victim received facial injuries from the assault and went to Great River Medical Center for treatment. On June 18 deputies located Michael V. Jagerson Jr. at DMC Hwy 99 and Golf Course Rd. As a result of the assault, he was placed under arrest for assault with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor. Jagerson was transported to the Des Moines County Jail.

Linda Sue Fear

Linda Sue Fear, 62 of Mount Pleasant passed away Friday, June 18, 2021, at her home following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Linda was born February 22, 1959, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Earnest and Martha (Bates) Bright.  She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1977 and attended Indian Hills Community College.  Linda married Kent Fear and they later divorced.  She worked as an administrative secretary for Blue Bird Midwest for 25 years, Engineer Building Design for a few years, and the State of Iowa Judicial Branch since 2006.

Linda was a member of the Finley United Methodist Church and attended the Wellspring Church. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, and knitting.  Linda especially enjoyed spending time with family and watching her daughter Rachelle in her many activities.

Linda is survived by her daughter Rachelle Fear and her fiancé Brian Beaty of Vinton; her father Earnest Bright of Mount Pleasant; sisters: Brenda Bright (Mike Wheelock) of Ames; Sharon (Bill) Beattie of Mount Pleasant; and a brother Doug (Karen) Bright of Keokuk.  She was preceded in death by her mother.

 

A visitation will be held from 9:00 am until noon on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 pm.  Pastor Lindsey Ford will officiate.  Burial will be in the Finley Cemetery.  The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Linda and her family.   www.powellfuneralhomes.com
