High School Basketball

Both Mt. Pleasant teams captured conference victories against Keokuk last Friday and the Panthers will look to keep the streak going as they face off against Benton tonight celebrating senior night with the girls starting at 5:30 pm and the boys to follow. KILJ will be on the call for both games.

The Winfield-Mt. Union girls team moves to 8-0 after defeating Hillcrest Academy in convincing fashion 55-13 last Saturday. The boys team kept it close against the Ravens with the Wolves coming out on top 59-56. Abram Edwards and Cam Buffington accounted for 39 of the 59 points. Both teams will have to wait until Friday, December 16th, when they host Columbus with the girls game starting at 6 pm.

WACO ended the weekend 4-0 as the girls team defeated Columbus 60-41 and Keota 55-21, Ellah Kissell ended with 47 points on the weekend. The boys team clobbered Columbus 86-23 on Friday, then took that momentum into Saturday handling Keota 70-36. Hunter Hughes led the scoring with 17 points. Both teams will travel to play Highland tomorrow with the girls starting at 6 pm.

Danville will look to get back on track tomorrow, December 13th, at home against Van Buren County with the first game scheduled for 6 pm.

The New London Tigers will play Mediapolis tomorrow with the girls scheduled to start at 6 pm. Holy Trinity Catholic will face off against Burlington Notre Dame at home with the girls going at 6 pm.

The Central Lee boys basketball team will tip-off against West Burlington tomorrow at home at 7:30 pm, while the girls team will have to wait until Friday, December 16th, to host Danville at 6 pm.

High School Wrestling

The Mt. Pleasant boys wrestling team competed at the Grinnell tournament last weekend and the Panthers faced tough competition. The Panthers were shutout by Bondurant-Farrar and Webster City. Bowen Davis, Jared Dorothy, and Franklin Tousignant picked up wins against East Marshall/GMG with Tousignant winning by fall. Davis picked up another win by fall against Grinnell and William Birdsell ended his day with two wins by fall, one against Grinnell and the other against Prairie. The boys team will be back in action at home against Fort Madison and Mid-Prairie on Thursday, December 15th.

The girls team will wrestle December 17th at the Wilton Tournament.

High School Bowling

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers girls and boys teams will be going against Fairfield today at Flamingo Lanes.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The men’s basketball team will be back in action tomorrow on the road against Saint Ambrose University at 7:30 pm.

The women’s basketball team’s next game is tomorrow as they travel to play Grace College at 2 pm.

The women’s wrestling team is in action December 16th at the Eagle Duals at Avila University, while the men’s team will have to wait until next year to wrestle at Central Methodist University on January 10th.

The Tiger’s next indoor meet will be the Dutch Athletics Classic on January 14th.

Larry Kent Kindig, Jr.

Larry Kent Kindig, Jr., 61, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Larry Kent Kindig, Jr. was born November 3, 1961 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Larry Kent and Maycle Ann (Jennings) Kindig, Sr. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant Community High School in 1980. On October 20, 1984 at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Larry was united in marriage to Gail Ann Wellington.

Larry was a lifelong carpenter and farmer. He began his carpentry career with the H. Eugene Smith Construction Co. of Mt. Pleasant. Larry then became a carpenter with the Carpenters Union Local 1260 of Iowa City. While with the union, Larry completed all types of carpentry for the Calucci Construction Company and the Millard Construction Company. He rose to become a supervisor for the companies, overseeing multiple building projects. All during his carpentry career, Larry farmed the family farm with his grandfather and sons.

Larry was an avid arrowhead hunter with his friend Jeff and son Dustin. He loved to watch NASCAR and was a major fan of Dale and Dale Jr. Earnhardt. All his life he remained a loyal supporter of the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. He loved to play cards, especially Euchre and shoot pool with his friends. Larry was an avid deer and turkey hunter and treasured the hunting time with his friends. Larry loved all the Blue Heeler dogs he had and his newest dog, a Red Heeler named Elly. Most of all, Larry remained a very proud father of his sons.

Those thankful for sharing in Larry’s life include his wife of 44 years, Gail of Mt. Pleasant; two sons – Drew Kindig and his wife Claudia and Dustin Kindig, all of Mt. Pleasant; his mother – Maycle Kindig of Mt. Pleasant and a sister and her husband – Debbie and Greg Perrott.

His father Larry Sr. preceded him in death in 2008.

A private family prayer service will be held. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Friday, Dec. 16 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-8 PM on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the family for a charity to be chosen later. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com

HCHC Foundation Announces Grant Award Recipients

Henry County Health Center Foundation is pleased to announce its 2022 Grant Award Recipients: ISU Extension, Parkview Home, Iowa Wesleyan University, Mount Pleasant Community Childcare Center and Mount Pleasant Community School District. The HCHC Foundation awarded grants to each of these organizations for various projects supporting health related initiatives.

ISU Extension was awarded $2,500 for the Family Connection program.  Parkview Home Care Center in Wayland received a grant for $1,000 for the purchase of medical grade chairs for their dining room.  Iowa Wesleyan University was given a grant for $2,000 for enhanced nursing student recruitment.  Mount Pleasant Community Childcare Center was awarded $2,500 to help build a before and after school program.  And Mount Pleasant Community School District was handed a check for $2,000 for the purchase of new heart rate monitors for their students.

In total, the HCHC Foundation awarded $10,000 in grants this year.

The HCHC Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the enhancement of the health and well-being of Henry County individuals and families.  Foundation Director Mark Hempen says, “We are very excited to support the projects of these organizations that will make a difference in the health of our county residents.  These grants are just one example of how HCHC Foundation fulfills our mission for a healthier Henry County.”

Master Gardener Home Gardening Series Begins January 3

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will again host the Home Gardening Webinar Series, beginning in January and ending in March.

Designed for anyone who is interested in gardening or horticulture, the series aims to inspire and educate. Throughout the series, participants will hear from experts at Iowa State, the University of Illinois, North Dakota State University, Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Reiman Gardens. The sessions are free and open to the public, although registration is required.

Four sessions in January will cover edible topics including building and using cold frames, growing microgreens inside, growing and preserving herbs and designing an edible landscape.

Pruning is one of the most highly sought-after presentation topics, so the month of February will be completely devoted to pruning. Each week, an expert will provide in-depth instruction on how to prune and care for shade, conifer and apple trees, as well as brambles, shrubs and vines.

In March, the series will conclude with two presentations about water usage. On March 1, Ed Lyon, director of Reiman Gardens, will discuss Cassian Schmidt style gravel gardens, which are water-wise gardens that do not require continuous watering once established. March 8, representatives from the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation District and Polk County Public Works will detail rain gardens and rain barrels as strategies for landscapes with excessive water levels.

“The Home Gardening Webinar Series is for everyone, regardless of gardening experience,” said Alicia Herzog, statewide Master Gardener coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. “The topics chosen are based on survey responses from last year’s participants and will appeal to a wide range of viewers. This program has been a great success with our audience, and we look forward to bringing them another engaging season.”

The series is an educational opportunity for existing master gardeners, those interested in becoming master gardeners and those who just want to learn more about these topics.
