Sports, October 25th

High School Football

#10 WACO will face off against #7 Don Bosco in a road matchup this Friday, October 27th, with kickoff at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. 

#1 Winfield-Mt. Union will have another home matchup with Moravia making the trip at 7 pm. KILJ 98.5 FM, AM 1130, and kilj.com will have the call. 

Both Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO were set up in Pod A.

#10 Mediapolis will take on Camanche this Friday at home with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm. Jesup and #4 Monticello is the other matchup in Pod D.

In Class 3A, Fort Madison and Assumption were placed in Pod B with the Bloodhounds traveling to take on Solon and the Knights colliding with West Delaware.

Mt. Vernon was placed in Pod C as the Mustangs will host Independence. Williamsburg will take on Humboldt at home. 

High School Volleyball

Holy Trinity Catholic will take on Edgewood-Colesburg tonight at 7 pm at West Liberty High School. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. Coach Freesmeier discussed what the Crusaders will have to do to compete with the Vikings.

West Burlington will square off with Grundy Center tonight at 7 pm at Williamsburg. 

All-Conference Selections

The season is now over for all Southeast Conference (SEC) teams and the All-Conference list has been dished out with Fairfield, the conference champion, leading the conference with six honorees.

Fairfield had three 1st Team All-Conference selections in seniors Maddie Jones and Rowan Terrell and junior Lilly Bergren.

Leighton Messinger was tabbed Conference Player of the Year and the only 1st Team nominee for the Demons.

Messinger was first in the conference in kills with 343, second in the conference in efficiency with a 0.229 clip, 12th in digs, and fifth in aces with 43. Messinger will be someone to keep an eye on as this was only her sophomore campaign.

MaKenna Altgilbers, a senior for Keokuk, ranked third in the conference in kills with 292 and fifth in the conference with a 0.169 kill efficiency. Altgilbers also blocked 36 shots and finished with 45 aces as the lone 1st Team All-Conference member for the Chiefs.

Fort Madison’s senior middle hitter, Taylor Johnson, was tabbed 1st Team All-Conference as she ranked sixth in kills with 180 on the season. Additionally, Johnson was fourth in blocks with 40 for the year. 

Anna Buxton, junior, ranked second in kills (337), seventh in efficiency (0.159), and 12th in aces with 32. This earned Buxton a spot on the All-Conference 1st Team. 

For Mount Pleasant, Alex Scott, a sophomore, earned 2nd Team All-Conference with her 132 kills and team-leading kill efficiency of 0.064. Scott also had 18 blocks, 266 digs, and 36 aces, which ranks 9th in the conference.

Emma Starr and Courtney Raub end their Panther careers as All-Conference Honorable Mentions with Starr tallying 141 kills and Raub ranking 9th in assists.

Cross Country

The state meet will be run at Fort Dodge with Class 1A and 4A running on October 27th and Class 2A and 3A competing on October 28th. 

College Football

Iowa will enjoy their bye week.

Iowa State University will be back in action this week against Baylor on Saturday, October 28th.

Fort Madison Home Total Loss After Fire

A house fire completely destroyed a Fort Madison home on Sunday morning.

On Sunday, October 22nd, around 7:30am the Fort Madison fire department arrived at a structure in the 2400 block of Avenue N. Upon arrival, they found a house engulfed in flames.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

The home is a total loss.

This fire is being investigated at this time.

Danville Flushing Hydrants

Jackson Collins

Jackson H. Collins was born on May 13, 1930, the son of Myrtle Woodson Collins and John Harvey Collins. He passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, at his home.

Jack, the youngest of seven children, was born on the family farm in Tippecanoe Twp., Henry County, Iowa.  He started his schooling in a one room country school, Pleasant Point, and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1948.  In 1950 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he received training as a radio repairman.

On June 22, 1952 he married Miss Barbara C. Messer of Burlington and they started their married life in Alaska where he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage.  In the fall of 1953 he rotated to the Lower 48, being posted to March Field at Riverside, California.  On discharge in the fall of 1954 they remained in California, moving to Burlington in the fall of 1955.

He continued working in consumer electronics until the fall of 1956 at which time he started work at International Resistance Company.  While there he transferred into the Electronic Engineering department, rising to the position of Senior Electronic Engineer.  He worked in this capacity until 1983, at which time he became Plant Manager for an Electronic Assembly plant in South Dakota.  In 1999 they returned to Iowa and he accepted employment to salvage an Electronic Assembly division which was failing.  This accomplished, he remained with that company until his retirement at age 73.  Following retirement he was a long standing member of the Walnut Creek YMCA.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, their five children: Gerald, Karen, Steven, Diane and Angela.  Six grandchildren: Alyssa, Samantha, Paul, Gwendolyn, Adam and Zachariah.  Daughters in law: Christina and Elizabeth and one sister: June Collins Klopfenstein.  Preceding him in death are his parents, his sisters: Helen Robertson, Mabel Collins, Flora Ford Kratch and his brothers: John and Frank Collins.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.  The family will receive friends from noon until time of service.  Burial will follow in the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.  A memorial has been established in his memory.

Prep Volleyball: Leighton Messinger Tabbed SEC Player of the Year

SEC Volleyball- The season is now over for all Southeast Conference (SEC) teams and the All-Conference list has been dished out with Fairfield, the conference champion, leading the conference with six honorees.

Fairfield finished 9-1 in conference play, which includes their 5-0 record in the SEC tournament, and 20-12 overall, as the Trojans fell to Assumption in the Class 3A Region 8 semifinals. Headlining the squad is three 1st Team All-Conference players.

Maddy Jones, senior, led the conference in assists with 633 for the season, while also adding 34 kills on just one error for the offense. Jones also led the conference in aces with 51 on the season.

Rowan Terrell was another successful senior for Fairfield as her presence at the net helped her lead the conference in block solos (26) and blocks (65), while ranking second in block assists (39). Her kill efficiency also ranked second in the conference with a mark of 0.209.

Lastly, Lilly Bergren ranked fourth in the conference with a 0.183 kill efficiency as a junior. Bergren finished the season with 219 kills, fourth in the conference, and 245 digs, 13th in conference.

Claire Thompson’s conference leading 0.253 kill efficiency and 36 blocks helped her nab 2nd Team All-Conference. Savannah Hollander was named All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Washington finished second in conference and grabbed a 7-3 conference record as the Demons were taken down by Assumption in the Class 3A Region 8 quarterfinal, giving Washington a 17-18 record. Leighton Messinger was tabbed Conference Player of the Year and the only 1st Team nominee for the Demons.

Ella Greiner, fifth in kills, and Lauren Hinrichsen, sixth in assists, earned 2nd Team All-Conference. They will also be returning for the Demons as this was their junior season. Remy Messinger and Maci Williams were named All Conference Honorable Mention.

Mount Pleasant grabbed third place in the conference after going 2-3 in the conference tournament. Keokuk knocked the Panthers out of the Class 4A Region 8 quarterfinal round. Alex Scott, a sophomore, earned 2nd Team All-Conference with her 132 kills and team-leading kill efficiency of 0.064. Scott also had 18 blocks, 266 digs, and 36 aces, which ranks 9th in the conference.

Keokuk finished fourth in the conference and ended their season with an 11-16 record after falling to Clear Creek Amana in the Class 4A Region 8 semifinals. Kendra Boatman had 39 aces and 455 assists for the season, which earned the Sophomore a 2nd Team All-Conference nod. MaKayla Altgilbers and Kylie Sisk were named All Conference Honorable Mentions.

Fort Madison finished in fifth in conference and Burlington in sixth place. The Bloodhounds were eliminated from the postseason by Burlington and the Grayhounds lost to Oskaloosa in the next round of Class 4A Region 8.

Better Temperatures Allow Good Week for Crops – Crop Progress and Condition Report

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.

“Warmer and generally dry conditions allowed for harvest to take another big step forward, with soybeans nearing completion,” said Secretary Naig. “A significant weather system with the potential for widespread rain is expected to move through the state later this week, which could idle harvest but alleviate some of the drought conditions.”

The weekly report is also available on the USDA’s website at nass.usda.gov.

Crop Report
Dry and warmer than normal temperatures in Iowa this week resulted in 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 22, 2023, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Corn and soybean harvest continued to be the primary field activities for the week, although there were reports of fertilizer application and fall tillage.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 16 percent very short, 38 percent short, 44 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 28 percent very short, 43 percent short, 28 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus.

Corn harvested for grain reached 62 percent statewide, 2 days ahead of last year and 1 week ahead of the 5-year average. Moisture content of field corn being harvested for grain remained steady at 17 percent. Soybeans harvested reached 87 percent, 1 day ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of the average.

Pasture condition improved slightly to 19 percent good to excellent. Livestock conditions have been reported as generally good, while getting water to pastured cattle continued to be an issue.

Temperatures through the reporting period were unseasonably warm across much of Iowa with positive departures up to four degrees in the northwest; the statewide average temperature was 52.0 degrees, 2.2 degrees above normal. Rainfall was also sparse with widespread deficits in the 0.40- to 0.60-inch range along with numerous stations reporting no measurable totals.  

Clouds cleared in northeastern Iowa through Sunday (15th) afternoon as overcast conditions and spotty light showers remained in southern Iowa. Brisk northwesterly winds held daytime temperatures in the low to mid-50s. The remaining cloud cover over the state quickly dissipated, leading to starry skies into Monday (16th) with morning lows in the upper 30s and low 40s. High temperatures varied from the upper 50s north to mid-60s south under sunny skies with northwesterly winds persisting. Calm to light and variable winds developed overnight with patchy fog across northeastern Iowa and morning lows on Tuesday (17th) in the 30s. Afternoon conditions were clear with southwesterly winds and high temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. Winds began shifting to the west as a low-pressure center propagated through Minnesota into Wednesday (18th) with morning lows holding in the 30s east to low 50s west. Light showers formed along the attendant cold front as it swept through the state in the late afternoon with temperatures holding in the upper 50s and low 60s. Additional showers formed in northwestern Iowa and then reformed over southeastern Iowa before dissipating near sunrise on Thursday (19th). Rainfall totals were widespread, though generally less than 0.20 inch; the highest amounts were found in north-central and southeastern Iowa with 0.32 inch in Swea City (Kossuth County), 0.34 inch in Wapello (Louisa County) and 0.40 inch at Keokuk Lock and Dam (Lee County).

Clouds gradually cleared in western Iowa later in the day with highs climbing into the upper 60s, while mid to upper 50s persisted under overcast skies. Light westerly winds persisted into Friday (20th) with morning lows in the upper 30s to mid-40s with patchy fog observed in central Iowa. Mostly sunny skies greeted Iowa through the day with highs varying from the mid-60s east to upper 70s west, where winds were out of the south; the statewide average high was 71 degrees, 10 degrees above normal. A weak and fast-moving cold front dropped southeast through Iowa into Saturday (21st), shifting winds to the northwest. Wind speeds increased as the sun rose with skies remaining clear and temperatures rising into the upper 50s and low 60s. Morning lows on Sunday (22nd) ranged from the mid-30s northwest to mid-40s southeast under clear skies and light winds.

Weekly precipitation totals ranged from no accumulation at stations across Iowa to 0.41 inch in Oskaloosa (Mahaska County). The statewide weekly average precipitation was 0.10 inch while the normal is 0.58 inch. Little Sioux (Harrison County) reported the week’s high temperature of 80 degrees on the 20th, 19 degrees above normal. Elkader (Clayton County) and Stanley (Buchanan County) reported the week’s low temperature of 28 degrees on the 18th, on average eight degrees below normal.
