Boys’ Prep Golf: Matheney Advances to Districts

Mount Pleasant’s Nick Matheney finished 5th as an individual at last night’s Class 3A boys’ golf sectional, advancing to districts.

Solon was the meet champion with 293 strokes. Washington was the runner up with 325 strokes.

Mount Pleasant placed fourth, missing out on a trip to districts by five strokes.

Districts will be hosted at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg.

Reece Kempker placed 10th for Mount Pleasant while Ian Hake finished 22nd.

Solon’s Mac McCarty was the meet medalist, carding a one-over 71.

Kaleb Allen of Notre Dame and Washington’s Roman Roth both tied for second.

Girls’ Prep Golf: Wibben Sixth at SEC Meet

Mount Pleasant’s Sami Wibben placed sixth at the Southeast Conference meet yesterday at Flint Hills Golf Course.

Wibben and Kylie Walderbach were the lone Panthers to compete.

Walderbach carded a 123.

Burlington’s Lauren Briggs was the meet medalist shooting a 79.

Natalie Ames of Keokuk placed second with an 82.

Boys’ Prep Golf: Mediapolis Brings Three to Districts

Three Mediapolis Bulldogs are heading to the district golf meet.

Jacob Grier, Ben Wolter and Kamden Stotlar are all moving to the district meet after strong performances at a 2A sectional in Tipton.

Grier punched in an 87, with Wolter and Stotler both carding 88’s.

As a team, Mediapolis placed fourth.

West Branch was the team champion, with Tipton placing in second.

Boys’ Prep Golf: New London Moving to Districts

New London placed second as a team yesterday, moving to the district tournament after playing well at Deerwood Golf Course.

The Tigers were bested only by Keota, who finished with a 356.

New London had a team score of 365.

Winfield-Mount Union was the fourth-place finisher.

Individually, Weston Miller led New London with an 85.

Mason Shellady had a 91, while Ethan Streeter had a 92.

Carter Loyd and Jake Edwards carded 93’s for Winfield-Mount Union, which was good enough to advance to districts.

KILJ’s Griffin Humphreys had a 110.

Girls’ Tennis: Mount Pleasant’s Walls, Olivas Finish 3rd

Mount Pleasant’s tandem of Savana Walls and Melanie Olivas placed third at yesterday’s Class 1A regional tennis tournament in Fairfield.

They took down both Centerville and Keokuk, before falling to Shannon Bush and Erica Sons of Davenport Assumption in the semis. That group wound up in second.

Walls and Olivas then bounced back for a 3rd place match win over Maharishi.

The win makes them state alternates.

In singles play, Eva Rounceville and Ellie Situmeang both lost in round one.

Prep Track: State Qualifying Today

It’s a huge day in track for the state with state qualifying meets taking the ovals.

All state qualifying meets are co-ed and set to begin today at 4:00 p.m..

Qualifiers will advance to the 2022 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships, currently scheduled for May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Area teams in Class 1A will travel to Sigourney.

Programs there include:

  • Danville
  • New London
  • WACO
  • Wapello
  • Winfield-Mount Union

In Class 2A, area teams will compete at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Featured there will be:

  • Central Lee
  • Mediapolis
  • Van Buren County

Mount Pleasant will be a host on that day, with the Panthers welcoming in Davenport Assumption, Clear Creek-Amana, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Washington and West Burlington-Notre Dame.
