State Representative Taylor Collins says a new Iowa law will help ensure law enforcement officers are reimbursed for legal expenses when they are wrongfully placed on a Brady-Giglio list.
In a statement released Tuesday, Collins announced that Governor Kim Reynolds has signed House File 2797 into law. The legislation establishes a process for officers to recover legal fees in cases where they were improperly included on a Brady-Giglio list, which can affect an officer’s credibility as a witness in court.
Collins specifically pointed to Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy Carlos Lopez, saying the new law will help officers in similar situations receive reimbursement when they have been wrongfully placed on the list. The law applies retroactively to July 1, 2021.
In his statement, Collins said law enforcement officers deserve due process and fairness, adding that the measure provides accountability while protecting the integrity of the justice system.
Collins represents Iowa House District 95, which includes portions of southeast Iowa, and serves as chair of the House Higher Education Committee.
