Iowa Family Week
Starting back in 2021, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union agreed to institute “Family Week” into the Iowa Unified Activity Federation calendar. This week prohibits any coach and/or teacher contact with student-athletes and prohibits any state sponsored events from occurring.
High School Baseball
Two local baseball players will be participating in the 2026 All Star Series. Landry Haberichter of Burlington Notre Dame and Fairfield’s Archer Kreuter will be a part of the Small Schools from the East.
The two graduates dominated for their respective teams, as Haberichter led the SEISC-South in home runs, RBIs, and stolen bases, while batting 0.429, while Kreuter led the Southeast Conference in batting average, home runs, and RBIs.
The duo will play against the Small West Schools for tomorrow, August 1st, at 10:30 am at Kirkwood Community College.
Local Athletic Camps
Wapello will be holding a youth football camp for students entering 3rd through 8th grade starting on August 3rd and running through the 6th from 4 to 5:30 pm. The camp will cost $25 and includes a t-shirt. If you have any questions, then email coach Tony Johnson at tony.johnson@wapellocsd.org.

New London will host their youth football camp from August 3rd through the 5th from 5 to 7 pm at the high school football field for 1st through 6th graders. The camp is free and participants can sign-up for a t-shirt on the first day of the camp.
Danville High School will be hosting the Soukup Basketball Camp August 7th, going from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and August 8th and 9th from 2 to 5 pm for boys and girls entering 3rd through 8th grades. The camp will cost $60 per camper.

Prospect League
The Burlington Bees skipped past the Decatur Bean Ballers last night, 9-1. Blake Gaskey struck out five in seven innings of work. The Bees will take on Quincy Doggy Paddlers at home tonight at 6:30 pm.
The Clinton LumberKings demolished the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes, 16-4. Gavin Awbrey swatted a double for two RBIs in the victory. The LumberKings will face off against the Normal CornBelters at 6:30 pm at home tonight.
This Day in Sports History
1961 – 31st MLB All Star Game (2nd of the year), Fenway Park, Boston: First tie in history; called due to rain after 9 innings with the score, 1–1.
1981 – Mid-season strike by MLB players ends after 50 days causing cancellation of 712 games; players and owners come to an agreement on free agent compensation. Resulted in the year being split into halves with the Cincinnati Reds missing the playoffs despite owning the best record because the Reds did not finish in first place in either half of the season.
2007 – Boston Celtics obtain former MVP and 10-time All-Star Kevin Garnett in a 7-for-1 deal with Minnesota Timberwolves; then the NBA’s biggest ever trade for one player.
