Iowa Family Week
Starting back in 2021, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union agreed to institute “Family Week” into the Iowa Unified Activity Federation calendar. This week prohibits any coach and/or teacher contact with student-athletes and prohibits any state sponsored events from occurring.
High School Baseball
Two local baseball players will be participating in the 2026 All Star Series. Landry Haberichter of Burlington Notre Dame and Fairfield’s Archer Kreuter will be a part of the Small Schools from the East.
The two graduates dominated for their respective teams, as Haberichter led the SEISC-South in home runs, RBIs, and stolen bases, while batting 0.429, while Kreuter led the Southeast Conference in batting average, home runs, and RBIs.
Due to the weather, the duo will play against the Large West Schools tomorrow, July 30th, at 1 pm with a matchup against the Small West Schools for Saturday morning at 10:30 am at Kirkwood Community College.
Local Athletic Camps
Wapello will be holding a youth football camp for students entering 3rd through 8th grade starting on August 3rd and running through the 6th from 4 to 5:30 pm. The camp will cost $25 and includes a t-shirt. If you have any questions, then email coach Tony Johnson at tony.johnson@wapellocsd.org.

New London will host their youth football camp from August 3rd through the 5th from 5 to 7 pm at the high school football field for 1st through 6th graders. The camp is free and participants can sign-up for a t-shirt on the first day of the camp.
Danville High School will be hosting the Soukup Basketball Camp August 7th, going from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and August 8th and 9th from 2 to 5 pm for boys and girls entering 3rd through 8th grades. The camp will cost $60 per camper.

Prospect League
The Burlington Bees steamrolled the Quincy Doggy Paddlers last night, 12-2. Juan Ferandez crushed a triple for four RBIs in the win. The Bees will host the Decatur Bean Ballers tomorrow, July 30th, at 6:30 pm.
The Clinton LumberKings got back into the win column last night, beating the Lafayette Aviators, 10-6. Gavin Awbrey tabbed an RBI in the victory. The LumberKings will look to sweep the Aviators on the road tonight at 6 pm.
This Day in Sports History
1754 – The first international boxing match was held. The 25-minute match was won when Jack Slack of Britain knocked out Jean Petit from France.
1940 – John Sigmund of St. Louis, MO completed a 292-mile swim down the Mississippi River. The swim from St. Louis to Caruthersville, MO took him 89 hours and 48 minutes.
2003 – Bill Mueller (Boston Red Sox) became the first player in major league baseball history to hit grand slams from both sides of the plate in a game. He had a total of three home runs in the game and collected 9 RBIs. It was only the 12th time that a player hit two grand slams in a single game.
