An Ottumwa man is being held without bond after allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife with the intent to end her pregnancy.
Junior Jean, 40, of Ottumwa, is charged with attempted nonconsensual termination of pregnancy and domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person with intent to cause serious injury. Both charges are Class D felonies.
Court documents state Ottumwa police responded to a home in the 100 block of South Cooper Avenue at approximately 9:05 p.m. Thursday, July 30, following a disconnected 911 call. A woman could reportedly be heard screaming for help before the call ended.
Investigators allege Jean made statements about ending the woman’s pregnancy and struck her multiple times in the abdomen with his legs. The woman reported pain and was transported to a hospital.
Jean was taken to the Wapello County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 7, and a no-contact order has been issued.
The charges are accusations, and Jean is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
