High School Girls’ Tennis
Burlington Notre Dame will face off against Albia today on the road.
Mt. Pleasant’s season opener will be a road contest against the Nikes on August 10th.
Fairfield will start their season at home against Keokuk on August 10th.
High School Volleyball
Burlington Notre Dame will host a scrimmage on Wednesday, August 12th, with Wapello, Danville, and Winfield-Mt. Union making the trip.
High School Baseball
The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) released their All-State teams for all four classes and four of our local players found a spot on their respective teams.
In Class 1A, Burlington Notre Dame put a pair of Nikes on the All-State list with Landry Haberichter earning 1st Team honors, while Eli Oleson found a spot on the 2nd Team. This is Haberichter’s third consecutive season making the All-State team, as the senior batted 0.429 for the year and led the conference in home runs, RBIs, and stolen bases. Oleson touted the 8th best batting average in the state at 0.562. The Nike also added 33 RBIs and a conference-leading 14 doubles in a season that awarded him SEISC-South Player of the Year honors.
Over in Class 3A, Fairfield’s Archer Kreuter made it back on the All-State team as a 2nd Teamer, while DeAndre Taylor of Burlington claimed his first All-State honor as a member of the 3rd Team. Kreuter led the Southeast Conference in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, and RBIs, and finished second in walks.
Taylor had the second-best batting average in the conference to go along with four double, three triples, and 21 RBIs at the plate.
Local Athletic Camps
Danville High School will be hosting the Soukup Basketball Camp August 7th, going from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and August 8th and 9th from 2 to 5 pm for boys and girls entering 3rd through 8th grades. The camp will cost $60 per camper.

New London will be holding their Youth Tigers Volleyball Camp Monday, August 10th, through Wednesday, August 12th, for players entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. The camp costs $50 and the campers will get a T-shirt. Kindergarteners through 2nd graders will practice from 10 am to 11 am and 3rd through 6th graders will go from 10 am to 11:30 am.

Mt. Pleasant Cross Country
This is the last week of summer runs, as the fall season draws near. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.
Today’s run will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm.

Southeastern Community College
The women’s soccer team will host Indian Hills Community College on Saturday, August 8th, at 3 pm.
The men’s soccer team will start the season against Bradley University on August 11th on the road.
Prospect League
The best-of-three game championship series between the Terre Haute Rex and the Cape Catfish will start tonight with first pitch at 6:30 pm. with first. Terre Haute will act as the hosts for game one and game three if needed.
Olympics
Fairfield’s Matt Stutzman announced on Tuesday that he had his sights aimed on a new target: qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and becoming the first Paralympic Gold Medalist to win an Olympic Gold Medal in archery.
Stutzman retired from international para-archery competition after recording a record score of 149 out of 150 in the 2024 Paralympic Games final for his first gold medal. The debut of compound archery, which is a mixed-team event, is what drew him out of retirement, along with challenging people’s belief on what is possible. The 2024 Archer of the Year is known around the world as “The Armless Archer” as Stutzman was born without arms and fires his compound bow using his feet and a release mechanism positioned near his shoulder. Compound mixed-team qualification is scheduled for July 19th, 2028.

1879 – The first Australian rules football game to be played at night took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game was to promote the introduction of electricity to the city of Melbourne.
1890 – Cy Young achieved his first major league victory. He would accumulate 511 in his career.
