Raymond Harold “Red” Wellman, 78, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 1:51 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2026, at his home in West Point.
He was born on May 4, 1948, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Harold B. & Ruth E. (Ponte) Wellman. On April 3, 1971, he married Eva Marie Goerlich. She preceded him in death on August 19, 2020.
He is survived by his three sons: Dan (Kristine) Wellman of Riverview, Florida, Geoff (Kristy) Wellman of Burlington, Iowa, Stefan (Tracy) Wellman of Boise, Idaho; seven grandchildren: Elek, Evan, Kenzie, Raegan, Braylan, Enslee, Jordan; three great grandchildren: Isabelle, Hadley, Brianna; sister: Kathleen (John) Hamilton of Smithville, Missouri; brother: Marvin Wellman of West Point, Iowa; special friend: Jeanne Bremekamp. Also surviving are several aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Eva; sister-in-law: Wilma Wellman.
Red was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He served in the United States Army. After his service he was employed at the Iowa State Penitentiary until his retirement. He was a AFSCME member having served as president and also a member of the West Point American Legion Holtz – Geers Post #668. Red was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Kansas City Chiefs and Indiana Fever fan. He enjoyed reading, going on fishing trips and most of all spending time with his family.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Schmitz Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Following visitation, his body will be entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point with Father Dan Dorau officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point with full military rites presented by the West Point American Legion Holtz – Geers Post #668.
A memorial has been established in his memory for the West Point Library.
