David D. Hellwig

David D. Hellwig, 70, of Bonaparte, Iowa, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Friday, August 14, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born on January 19, 1956, in Keosauqua, Iowa, the son of Howard Arlo and Annie Frances (Atkinson) Hellwig. On December 20, 1980, he married Sandra Gass in Ames, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife: Sandy; daughter: Amanda (Charley Ray) Hellwig of Golden, Colorado; son: Jacob (Becky) Hellwig of Ottumwa, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Natalie, Matthew, Michael, Nicholas and Joshua Hellwig, Logan and Liam Ray; brother: Michael Hellwig; sister: Eileen Brotherton and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law: Diane.

David was a 1975 graduate of Harmony High School. He attended Indian Hills College and graduated from Iowa State University in 1979. He worked as a mechanic, road maintenance operator and inspector for the Iowa Department of Transportation for forty years. David was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and raising animals.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Farmington United Methodist Church with Pastor Jarid Myers officiating.

Burial will be at Thompson Cemetery in rural Bonaparte, Iowa.

Memorials have been established in his memory for the Mayo Clinic, the Farmington United Methodist Church or the Farmington Food Pantry.
