1945 – NY Giants outfielder Mel Ott hits historic 500th MLB home run off Braves Johnny Hutchings, joins Babe Ruth and Jimmy Foxx as only the players to reach the milestone.

1957 – Gil Hodges hits his 13th MLB career grand slam, a National League record, and the last ever by a Brooklyn Dodgers player.

1994 – Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. becomes only the second player after Lou Gehrig to appear in 2,000 consecutive MLB games, in a 1-0 win vs Twins.

1961 – 31st MLB All Star Game (2nd of the year), Fenway Park, Boston: First tie in history; called due to rain after 9 innings with the score, 1–1.

1981 – Mid-season strike by MLB players ends after 50 days causing cancellation of 712 games; players and owners come to an agreement on free agent compensation. Resulted in the year being split into halves with the Cincinnati Reds missing the playoffs despite owning the best record because the Reds did not finish in first place in either half of the season.

2007 – Boston Celtics obtain former MVP and 10-time All-Star Kevin Garnett in a 7-for-1 deal with Minnesota Timberwolves; then the NBA’s biggest ever trade for one player.

1874 – First baseball teams to play outside the US: Boston and Philadelphia in the British Isles.

1968 – Washington shortstop Ron Hansen makes 8th unassisted triple-play in MLB history and first in 41 years as Senators lose 10-1 to Cleveland.

1990 – George Steinbrenner is forced by Commissioner of Baseball Fay Vincent to resign as principal partner of NY Yankees.

Local Athletic Summer Camps

The Winfield-Mt. Union Football Camp will start on August 4th and run through the 6th with 1st through 6th graders going from 7:15 to 8 pm, while the 7th through 12th graders will practice from 5 to 7 pm.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Volleyball Camp starts on August 4th and will run through the 8th with 3rd through 5th graders starting at 11 am and going until 12:30 pm. 6th through 8th graders will practice from 9 am to 11 am and 9th through 12th graders will start the day from 7 am to 9 am.

The WACO youth volleyball camp is August 4th and 5th from 10 am to noon for 5th through 8th graders. Grades 9th through 12th will have their camp on the same days but from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. 

Danville will be hosting a youth volleyball camp from August 4th through the 6th (only 2nd through 5th graders will be practicing on the 6th). From 11 am to 12:30 pm, the 2nd through 5th graders will be practicing, while the 6th through 8th graders will be going from 1 pm to 3:30 pm.

August 6th through the 8th, Fairfield will be hosting a volleyball camp for incoming and current high schoolers. The camp will be at Fairfield High School. 

The Mediapolis volleyball camp will run from August 4th through the 7th. All girls entering high school will practice from 8 am to 9 am. 3rd through 6th graders will go from 9:30 am to 11 am and 7th through 8th graders will be drilled from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Campers will receive a t-shirt, a certificate, and there will be daily drawings.

The Wapello Volleyball Camp starts August 6th and runs through the 7th. Practices will range from 9 am to 10:30 am for 6th through 8th graders and 11 am to 12:30 pm for 3rd through 5th graders.

1874 – Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patents a portable tennis court.

1986 – New York jury rules NFL violated antitrust laws, awards USFL $1 in damages.

Iowa Family Week

Starting yesterday and running through August 3rd, Iowa Family Week or the Iowa Unified Activities Federation’s Non-Contact Period, is a week-long break from school-related activities. There will be no organized school events, and coaches and teachers are prohibited from contacting students regarding school activities. Enjoy the break!

NWS- High Heat Indexes Possible Through Tuesday 7/28/25

The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities is cautioning residents in the KILJ listening area that hot and humid conditions are possible through Tuesday, July 29th, with potential for heat index values reaching up to 112 degrees at times. A heat advisory is in effect from 1pm – 9pm.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms stays in the forecast through Sunday night.  High temperatures, as we head into the work week will reach into the mid-nineties with the heat index up to 112 degrees.

Drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid the sun during peak heat.  Check on neighbors, the elderly, kids, and those without access to cooling.

 

Rural Restoration Project Forum in MP 7/28/25

The Rural Restoration Project will be hosting a housing forum in Mt. Pleasant on Monday, July 28th, at the First Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut St., from 6:30pm – 8pm.  Three speakers will present on housing supply, affordability, and quality.  The public  will be able to provide input and ask questions.

Joy Padget, president of the Engage Keosauqua economic development nonprofit and general manager of the Hotel Manning in Keosauqua; Oscar Argueta, director of the Welcome Home Center, a Mt. Pleasant facility that helps new immigrants settle in the community; and Teresa Mertens, a Henry County native who has been a landlord and worked with other landlords in southeast Iowa for nearly 40 years, will speak at the event.
