Women’s College Soccer: Mulhern Named CAC Soccer Player of the Week

KILJ — Iowa Wesleyan goalkeeper Kylie Mulhern has been named the Continental Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced yesterday.

Mulhern, who is in her second season with the Tigers, recorded 11 saves in the Tigers’ 6-0 victory over Faith Baptist Bible College on Saturday.

This is the team’s first ward since joining the Continental Athletic Conference.

Iowa Wesleyan will battle Harris-Stowe State on Wednesday in St. Louis.

Kick is set for 1:00 p.m.

College Football: Wesleyan’s Esquivel Named Conference Offensive Player of the Week:

Iowa Wesleyan quarterback Gavin Esquivel has been named the the North Star Athletic Association Conference offensive player of the week.

In Saturday’s shootout loss, Esquivel completed 24-of-40 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns.

Esquivel’s longest completed pass was 69 yards and connected with 10 different receivers in the game.

Esquivel is the first Iowa Wesleyan football player to earn conference honors as the Tigers joined the conference this season along with their return to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic.

The Tigers will host Trinity International University this Saturday for a 12:00 pm contest.

Prep Volleyball: Mount Pleasant, Several Area Schools Back on Hardwood Tonight:

The Mount Pleasant volleyball team is one of many area teams back on the hardcourt tonight, in a busy slate of area volleyball.

Tonight the Panthers will travel to take on Washington in a Southeast Conference matchup.

The Panthers come into proceedings tonight with a record of 9-8, winners of three of their last five.

Senior hitter Kenna Lamm is off to a terrific start, providing 134 kills over the first 17 games.

Washington is 0-11 on the year, action will begin at 7:30 p.m.

College Football: Wesleyan Downed by Quincy:

Quincy and Iowa Wesleyan combined for nearly 1,000 yards between the two programs, but it was the Hawks who took control of the scoreboard earning a 59-27 win Saturday over the Tigers.

Quincy finished Saturday’s bout with 574 yards of offense, rushing for 307 yards on 40 attempts.

21-12 through the first quarter, Wesleyan clawed within a touchdown at 28-21 on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Gavin Esquivel to Braedin Ross.

in the next 2:20 of game time however, the Hawks would score twice, breaking the game open to lead 42-21 at the break.

Wesleyan did counter out of halftime, cashing in on a 70-yard score from Esquivel to Damian Tanelus, but would not get any closer.

Esquivel finished 24-of-40 for 393 yards and three touchdowns, while both Jaden Harris and Tanelus went over 100 yards receiving.

Tremayne Lee led the Hawks with 201 yards on the ground and two scores.

Wesleyan, now 0-3, will be back at home Saturday when they take on Trinity International.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

College Cross Country: Wesleyan Competes at All-American Invite in Decorah:

After only having one meet last school year, the Tiger Cross Country teams opened up their 2021 season at the Luther All-American XC Invitational.

In the women’s race, the Tigers were led by Faith Younce,  who covered the course in 22:39.

Allison Morris, an All-Conference selection a year ago, was the second Tiger to cross the finish line with a time of 23:18.

On the men’s’ side the Tigers were led by Tony Johnson, who ran a time of 27:57 on the four mile course.

Andrew Huhuyana was second for the Tigers with a time of 28:25, while Kenny Tucker, Logan Lucas and Marlon Brown all finished up shortly thereafter.

As a team, the men finished in 11th place.

The Tigers will be in action next at the Morningside Open on Friday, September 17th.

The first race is scheduled to go off at 11:15 am.

College Football: UNI’s Cuvelier Selected at MVFC Defensive POW:

University of Northern Iowa linebacker Spencer Cuvelier has been named the defensive player of the week in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The league announced the honor on Sunday.

Cuvelier was instrumental to the Panthers 34-16 win over Sacramento State, collecting 15 tackles, two fumble recoveries and forcing one, as well.

UNI improved to 1-1 with their win.

Sports, Saturday, September 11th

Prep Football: Mount Pleasant Stalls, New London Rolls, WACO Stays Perfect in Busy Friday Night:

Keokuk 31, Mount Pleasant 21

In game with 37 accepted penalties, it was the Keokuk Chiefs who withstood it all, clawing their way for a 31-21 win over Mount Pleasant last night at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

Panther sophomore Payton Hagans finally had his coming out party, scoring three touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Keokuk ground game was too much to overcome.

The combination of Lucas Swainey, Khalyl Tate and Equilius Lee accounted for all Chief points, as Keokuk earned their first win of the season.

Mount Pleasant quarterback Carson Coleman was picked off three times, but kept the chains chugging with bulldozing runs throughout the night.

The loss moved Mount Pleasant to 0-3.

They’ll take the next week to lick their wounds before traveling to West Burlington Notre Dame for a date with the Falcons.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

New London 71, Winfield-Mount Union 18 

New London answered a few calls and then some, as they shut down the hottest offense in eight-player football in the state, with a 71-18 win over Winfield-Mount Union last night.

Coming into the contest leading the state in touchdowns, Winfield’s Cam Buffington found tough sledding against a hard-nosed New London front.

New London improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Winfield-Mount Union slipped to 2-1.

No. 8 WACO 38, No. 9 English Valleys 13

The No. 8 (Radio Iowa) ranked WACO football team just keeps chugging along, as the Warriors cruised to a big 38-13 win over English Valleys last night.

The Warriors are now 4-0 on the season, and will look to keep things rolling against when they take on Iowa Valley.

Kick for that matchup is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Headlined by Iowa-Iowa State, there is a ton of statewide college football action today.

The Cyclones and Hawkeyes will meet in the 68th CyHawk matchup — it will be the first time both teams will meet as ranked opponents.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., with pre-game coverage on FM 105.5 and 98.5, as well as AM 1130 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The Iowa Wesleyan football team is on the road today at Quincy University, as the Tigers seek their first win of the year.

Wesleyan was beaten at home last weekend 31-7, by the Spartans of Missouri Baptist.

Girls’ Cross Country: Panthers Finish 6th at Fairfield Invite

Fairfield — The Mount Pleasant girls’ cross country team finished 6th out of twelve teams yesterday at the Fairfield Invitational.

Abby Blint led the way for Mount Pleasant with a second place finish, running 21:04.

Alexis Wagner, who just raced her second varsity race, went 22:27 good for 14th place overall. That time would have been good for 4th place in the Southeast Conference.

Belle Meador finished third on the team and improved her time from last Saturday’s Pella Invite by twenty seconds.

The Panthers will be off for the weekend before traveling to Fort Madison next week.

Haidyn Barker of Clear Creek Amana was the meet medalist, surging the Clippers to a team championship.

Danville-New London finished ninth.

Boys’ Cross Country: Danville-New London Rolls, Mount Pleasant 5th at Fairfield Invite

Fairfield — Ty Carr and Rylan Martin paced Danville-New London with third and fourth place finishes, helping guide the Bears to a team championship at the Fairfield Invitational last night.

Mount Pleasant finished fifth as a team.

Carr went 16:46 even, while Martin finished in 17:15.70.

Alexander Julian was the sixth place runner — Seth Bailey went 17:36.60 for eighth.

Mount Pleasant was led by Ben Carthey, who placed 15th.

Carthey surged to a 18:11.60.

Gabe Feldmann was the second place runner for the Panthers, taking 33rd overall in 19:16.60.

Winfield-Mount Union ended 11th, while WACO finished 12th in the team standings.

Prep Volleyball: Notre Dame, Wapello Both Win Easy, Other Area Finals

No. 1 Notre Dame 3, Danville 0 

The top-ranked Notre Dame Nikes, continued their dominance in southeast Iowa, rolling to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-7 win over Danville yesterday.

Gabby Deery was terrific in the front row again with 15 kills, while Josie Bentz added 11.

Jenna Bentz had 23 assists.

The defending state champion Nikes improved to 15-4, Danville slipped to 2-5.

Wapello 3, Columbus 0 

Wapello started with a 25-5 winner and never looked back as the Arrows swept Columbus yesterday in Super Conference North Division play.

Wapello won the second set 25-16, while claiming a 25-15 win in the third to finish off the sweep.

The Arrows upped their ledger to 12-7, while Columbus dropped to 2-11.

Victoria Howell led Columbus with six kills.
