Girls’ Track: Danville’s Parrott Takes Second in 3000m Thriller

By: Nathan Bloechl —sports@kilj.com

Des Moines — Neck and neck until the final salvo, Danville senior Addison Parrott gave it everything she had.

Parrott ran 10:33.21 finishing as runner up in the Class 1A 3000m run on a rain-soaked, waterlogged Blue Oval.

Running in front of, or just behind, Tri-Center’s Peyton Pogge for the entirety of the race, Parrott was narrowly edged out over the final 100 meters.

I am so happy, this weather, it’s a little iffy” said Parrott.

I gave it everything I got, it’s a twenty-second PR and it was a great battle in the end.”

Parrott, who was the state runner-up in the Class 1A cross country field earlier this fall, said the kick over the race’s final 400 meters was mostly adrenaline as Drake Stadium roared for both Parrott and Pogge.

At the beginning I was a little nervous, it was all adrenaline, I said to myself I need to save it for the end and I’m really happy with it turned out.”

Unsurprisingly, Parrott was gracious despite the runner-up finish, as she embraced and smiled with the champion as they crossed the finish line.

Afterall, she’s just happy to get back on the track after last year’s hiatus.

Training most every day during quarantine, Parrott was just ready to showcase to the state what she is capable of.

It was hard not having last year, it motivated me more, I just wanted to get better” she said with a smile.

It definitely paid off here, I’d say.”

Girls’ Track: Kelley Shines in Rainy Weather, Places 7th, Earns Medal

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

Des Moines — It wasn’t the most perfect conditions, but when it’s been 735 days between the 2019 State Track meet and the 2021 edition — and you’re a senior — does it really matter?

For Mount Pleasant senior Grace Kelley, it was just another day.

Kelley threw a day-best of 124 feet, six inches good enough for 7th place earning herself a medal in the 3A girls’ discus, in her first and only state track appearance.

I was definitely a little bit nervous, but I just wanted to come out and compete to the best of my abilities and looking to have fun” Kelley said.

With her medal draped around her neck and a smile from ear-to-ear, it sure seemed like mission accomplished for the Panther discus ace.

I am pretty excited, yeah. I haven’t been here before so it’s good to come out and do well – in the only year I can go feels great.”

Kelley was a second place, runner-up finisher at last week’s state qualifying meet, placing second to Davenport Assumption senior Anna Wohlers.

She credited her throws coach Shawn Striegel for calming her nerves and helping her make adjustments prior to today, so she could just “let it rip.”

Coach Striegel and I have a [great] relationship. He’s coached my brothers and I get on myself pretty hard. He does well to mellow that out and get me back to focus.”

Kelley now will cheer on her teammate Jadan Brumbaugh, who will compete in the girls’ shot put finals Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.

College Sports: Mount Pleasant Trio Signs with Central

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

Mount Pleasant — Three Mount Pleasant Panthers are heading to Pella.

Yesterday Jack Johnson, Chase Williamson and Karsyn Lamm all signed their letters of intent to play collegiate sports at Central College, the latest in the line of Panther standouts to take their talents to Pella.

Two years ago, Sam Beatty made the move to Central and one year ago former Mount Pleasant quarterback Brody Bender did the same.

Now, he’ll get two new shiny toys — and former teammates — in Johnson and Williamson at his disposal in an uptempo Central offense.

Johnson, the do-it-all piece for the Panthers over his four-year career, is anticipating a move to wide receiver at the next level.

I think the first year, I’ll work as a slot receiver but their coach told me to keep an open mind. Wherever they want to put me, I’ll go. That’s kind of just how I’ve always done it.”

Meanwhile, the role is much more distinct for Chase Williamson.

An all-district wide receiver and safety for Mount Pleasant this year, Williamson will play wideout for the Dutch in their flying aerial attack.

It will be a lot of fun, we are talking to a lot of guys going to Central — making friends with them. It will be a lot of fun and a lot of competition.

Williamson led Mount Pleasant’s air game with 558 yards on 31 catches and two scores this fall.

Meanwhile, Karsyn Lamm will be running track and field at the next level, competing for a team that is in the American Rivers Conference title scene year in and year out.

Lamm, who has been coached by her father Scott, always had the dream of competing at the next level.

I started track at a really young age, my brother was big in track growing up. So I started early and it drove my love for it and having him as my coach the last couple of years has been great also you know, being able to run with my sister. Definitely wanted to continue some of my track memories.”

Lamm said Central’s coaches have reached out to here about being a multi performer, either the heptathlon or decathlon — though neither are set in stone.

The senior will also compete in several events at this weekend’s state track and field meet in Des Moines.
