Des Moines — The 2021 State Track and Field Championships begin today in Des Moines and coverage will begin at 9:00 a.m. on KILJ-FM and kilj.com.
Here’s what today’s schedule looks like:
9:00 a.m. — Girls’ Shuttle Hurdle Relay Prelims: Karsyn Lamm, Kenna Lamm, Josie Gilmore, Jenna Gilmore (Mount Pleasant)
- That quartet will run in Saturday’s finals after placing 7th in prelims with a time of 1:09.13.
9:25 a.m. — Girls’ Discus: Grace Kelley (Mount Pleasant)
- Grace Kelly is a medalist! The Panther senior throws 124-06 good for 7th place in her first state track appearance.
9:45 a.m. — Boys’ Long Jump: Anthony Isley (Mediapolis), Thomas Eschman (Central Lee)
- Isley fouled on all three of his jumps, he will not place at the 2021 meet. Eschman goes 20 feet, 3/4 inches for his best leap of the morning, he fouled on his third and final jump. Eschman finishes 16th.
9:45 a.m. — 3000m Run: Abby Blint (Mount Pleasant)
- Abby Blint finished 22nd with a time of 11:42.44. She will not medal. Shewaye Johnson of Ballard was the meet winner running 9:57.21. She missed the state record by two seconds.
10:10 a.m. —3200m Run: Solomon Zaugg (Mediapolis)
- Zaugg, just a freshman, finished 14th in the Class 2A 3200m run. He ran 10:22.61.
10:55 a.m. — Boys’ 200m Dash: Chance Hocker (Central Lee)
- Hocker runs 23.82 good for 22nd.
2:15 p.m. — Boys’ Shuttle Hurdle Relay Prelims: Jack Johnson, Morgan Van Nyhuis, Bryce Wilson, Will Davidson (Mount Pleasant)
- The quartet of Johnson, Van Nyhuis, Davidson and Wilson run 1:05.00. They finish 20th overall and fourth in their heat.
Class 1A
3:30 p.m. — Girls’ Shot: Jobey Malone (Winfield-Mount Union)
- Malone throws 36 feet, 5 1/2 inches on her best toss of the day. She finishes 11th overall.
3:45 p.m. — Boys’ Long Jump: Cam Buffington (Winfield-Mount Union)
- Buffington jumps 19 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches to finish fourth in flight one.
4:15 p.m. — 3000m Run: Addison Parrott (Danville)
- Parrott earns a medal after finishing as runner up in the 3000m run. Parrott runs 10:33.21, losing out narrowly to Peyton Poe-gee who ran 10:32.91.
4:40 p.m. — 3200m Run: Seth Bailey (New London)
- New London junior Seth Bailey finishes 10th in the 1A boys’ 3200m run with a time of 10:13.64.
5:30 p.m. — 200m Dash Prelims: Josh Catala (New London)
- Catala finishes 12th overall running the 12th fastest time in prelims at 23.26. He will not qualify for finals.
5:55 p.m. — Girls 4x800m Relay: Cassidy Yaley, Jaeda Molle, Rylee Morris, Kamryn Sherwood (Danville)
The Danville quartet runs 10:55.72 good for 22nd.
6:15 p.m. — Boys’ Shot: Carter Allen (New London)
- Carter Allen with a toss 50 feet, 8 3/4 inches places fourth earning a medal as well. Allen was the fifth seed
6:35 p.m. — Girls’ Long Jump: Kenna Furnald (Danville)
- Furnald, a freshman, goes 15 feet, 6 1/4 inches for fifth. She’ll earn a medal in her first ever trip to the State Meet.
6:45 p.m. — Boys’ 4x800m Relay: Mason Chipman, Gabriel Gourley, Oliver Sowell, Ty Carr (Danville)
- Danville’s 4×800 team goes 8:09.01 for second place, finishing as runner-up to Earlham’s group who ran 8:04.37
7:55 p.m. — Girls’ 400m Dash: Aliyah Christensen (New London)
- Aliyah Christensen goes 1:06.20 to finish 22nd.
8:45 p.m. — Girls Shuttle Hurdle Prelims: Eden Svoboda, Chloe Horn, Alexis Dietsch, Allison Dowd (Danville)
- Danville’s quartet runs 1:15.53. They finish 22nd.
8:45 p.m. — Girls Shuttle Hurdle Prelims: Keetyn Townsley, Kayreanna Sharar, Morgan Grelk, Kyndal Townsley (Winfield-Mount Union)
- That group ran 1:14.51 good enough for 16th place.
