July 13th in Sports History:

1896 – Philadelphia’s Ed Delahanty became the second major league player to hit four home runs in a single game.

1930 – The first soccer World Cup competition began in Montevideo, Uruguay. Thirteen teams were in the competition.

1972 – Carroll Rosenbloom (owner of the Baltimore Colts) and Robert Irsay (owner of the Los Angeles Rams) traded teams.

1982 – The All-Star Game was played outside the United States for the first time. They played in Montreal, Canada.

1984 – Sportscaster Howard Cosell asked to be released from his duties on “Monday Night Football.” He said that he was “tired of being tied to the football mentality.”

1995 – Geddy Lee (Rush) sang “Oh Canada” before the All-Star Game at Baltimore’s Camden Yards.

New London Baseball Advances to State

NEW LONDON – The New London Tigers have advanced to the Class 1A Baseball State Championship next week in Carroll after defeating Moravia 11-1 Tuesday night in their state qualifier game. New London was defeated in the state quarterfinal round by Kee 4-3 last year.

KILJ’s Parker Testa spoke with New London Head Coach Brad Helmerson following Tuesday night’s contest.

“It feels good. It’s one of those deals where these kids have been working hard since last year when we lost in the quarterfinal round, so they’ve been doing the work. It’s rewarding to see them come out and do what they did in those first couple innings.” Helmerson said.

New London will head to Carroll next week for the 1A state tournament with quarterfinal games beginning on Monday.

Sports, July 12th

New London

New London Baseball will face off with Moravia tonight at 7:00 PM in the Class 1A – Substate 6 State Qualifier game at the Ottumwa Sports Complex in Ottumwa. The Tigers go into tonight’s game with an overall record of 27-1 after beating Notre Dame 5-0 Saturday night in the District 11 championship. Moravia enters tonight’s contest at 21-6 overall after defeating Sigourney 20-9 Saturday night in the District 12 championship. New London Head Coach Brad Helmerson says he expected a tough game against Notre Dame but wants to keep energy levels high going into the game tonight. Panther Hoopla Basketball Camp

Coming up on July 20th and 21st, Mount Pleasant High School is hosting the Panther Hoopla Basketball camp. Panther Hoopla is a southeast Iowa basketball camp offering fundamental skill sessions for girls and boys 3rd through 8th grade. This two-day camp will provide you a great opportunity to get in the gym and practice skills to help you all season long. 1970 – Jack Nicklaus beats Doug Sanders by 1 stroke at the British Open to win his 2nd of 3 Open Championships

1979 – At Comiskey Park in Chicago, “Disco Demolition Night” led to fans taking the field after a box of disco records was blown up. The White Sox forfeited the 2nd game of a doubleheader to the Detroit Tigers due to the condition of the field.

Sports, July 11

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Baseball was defeated by Marion 15-1 Friday evening in their first-round game of the Class 3A Substate 5 tournament. The loss effectively ends the Panthers season. The Panthers finish their 2022 campaign with an overall record of 9-19. MP Head Coach Brent Broeker says they are holding their heads high. “We were 11 runs from being a much higher seed. I told the boys to not hang their heads. Even though our record doesn’t show it, we were better this year and hopefully they’ll stay positive and have a good year next year.” Marion advances to take on Fort Madison tonight at 7:00 PM at Mount Mercy University.

New London

New London Baseball defeated Notre Dame 5-0 Saturday night to claim the District 11 Championship in the Class 1A Substate 6 tournament. Senior Carter Allen was 2 for 2 with a double, a triple, and 1 RBI. Senior Dereck Santiago went 6 full innings allowing no runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. The Tigers scored all 5 of their runs in the 4th inning to claim their victory. New London Head Coach Brad Helmerson says he expected a tough game. “We expected a tough game. Those guys are always tough and they’re a completely different team than we saw earlier in the year. Beating a team three times in the same year is not easy anywhere. They give us a tough game every time we see them.” New London is back on the field tomorrow night against Moravia in the State Qualifier game. That game will be at the Ottumwa Sports Complex in Ottumwa and is set to start at 7:00 PM. Live coverage will be available on KILJ.

1995 – Mickey Mantle made his final public appearance. It was to increase awareness of organ donation programs.

Mount Pleasant Varsity Baseball was defeated 15-1 by Marion in 5 innings at Mount Mercy University Friday evening. The loss effectively ends the Panthers season. Mount Pleasant finishes the 2022 campaign 9-19 overall and 7-13 in Southeast Conference play. San Diego Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar has been released from the hospital after a collision with rookie shortstop C.J. Abrams Thursday night. Profar was released Friday from UC San Diego Health and was diagnosed with a concussion and a neck strain.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Softball was defeated by Fairfield 13-0 in 2.5 innings Thursday night, the loss will effectively end the Panthers season. Head Coach Mike Beason said this following Thursday night’s game. “Fairfield is a quality team and Coty Engle is an outstanding Pitcher. Our team improved in a lot of areas this year. Congratulations to our lone Senior, Savana Walls on a fine career. At times we took one step forward and two back, but the team kept working to improve. Great group of players to work with, who need to continue to work in the off-season. Thanks to all the parents and fans who supported us throughout the year!”

Mount Pleasant Varsity Baseball will have their first round contest of the Class 3A – Substate 5 tournament tonight against Marion. 1937 – During the All-Star Game, Earl Averill hit a line drive that broke one of Dizzy Dean’s toes.

1953 – The Dodgers set a major league record when they got a home run in their 24th consecutive game.

1964 – Shea Stadium hosted it’s first and only All-Star game.

2003 – In Florida, Darrell Armstrong (Orlando Magic) was arrested after being accused of fighting with a female police officer outside a nightclub. Armstrong was booked into the Orange County jail on charges of battery on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence.
