Shots fired call UPDATE

On 4/12/22 at approximately 20:33 hours, the Mt Pleasant Police Department was dispatched to the W Broad St. and N Jackson St area for a call of a large fight. While enroute officers were notified of shots fired.

The initial investigation determined that numerous people had been fighting (20 plus). At some point a handgun was displayed and eventually shot, striking an 18 year old local victim. The victim was transported to the hospital and later released with minor injuries.

Due to the proximity and concern, an Iowa Wesleyan University dorm room was placed on lock down and searched. Two suspects were identified and one was quickly located. The other one was found a short time later. They were both taken into custody and eventually transported to the Henry County Jail. They were both charged with Participating in a riot, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

The investigation is still ongoing and there is no concern for public safety. There will be further follow up and more charges will be forthcoming.

There is numerous video footage that has been turned in. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Mt Pleasant PD.

There will be more information being released later.

The Mt Pleasant PD was assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, New London PD, Iowa State Patrol, Washington Tactical Response team, Probation and Parole, Winfield PD, Iowa Wesleyan University, and Mt Pleasant Community School District.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is encouraged to contact the Mt Pleasant PD at 319 385-1450.

Shots Fired, One Injured in Incident near IWU Campus in Mount Pleasant

UPDATE….there is an unofficial report that the individuals involved in the incident are now in custody.

A fight, two shots fired and one person injured in an incident that began around 8:30 pm Tuesday night near the Iowa Wesleyan University campus.  No official details regarding how the fight started.  Law enforcement officers did search McKibbon Hall on campus looking for a person of interest who officers believed went into the dorm.  Mount Pleasant Police Chief Lyle Murray told KILJ one person of interest was found in the building.  He did confirm that a Mt. Pleasant High School student not an Iowa Wesleyan student, was injured but it appears his condition is not life threatening. On-campus students were directed to shelter in place.  The incident may have started with a verbal argument.

Mount Pleasant School Superintendent John Henriksen announced late Tuesday night that out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to let local law enforcement sort out the details of this incident, Mount Pleasant Pleasant Community School District is cancelling classes for Wednesday, April 13.

Henry County Polling Places and Voting

The changes in Henry County Polling Places and Voting Precincts, were finalized with the Supervisors’ approval Tuesday morning. These changes were not the decision of the Commissioner of Elections, the Board of Supervisors or the Secretary of State.  These changes are made every 10 years after the census.  After the 2020 census the need to redistrict is due to the change in population for the State House and Senate Legislative Districts which is done by the State Legislators.  Henry County was previously all in the same Legislative Districts and now the map approved by legislation has Salem Township, Tippecanoe Township and Center Township including the cities within them in State House District 87 and Senate District 44.  Jackson Township, Baltimore Township, New London Township Trenton township, Marion Township, Canaan Township, Scott Township, Wayne Township, Jefferson Township including the cities within them are in State House District 95 and Senate District 48.  All of Henry County was in U.S. Congressional District 2 and now it is in U.S. Congressional District 1.  This is effective for June 7, 2022, Primary Election moving forward.
