Mount Pleasant High School’s show choir InMotion brought home the Second Runner-Up trophy Saturday night after a full day of competition at Pella High School.

Eleven high school and six middle school groups performed in the daytime. Mount Pleasant placed second and Fort Madison third in 3A, Central Lee placed second in 2A and Fort Madison’s prep group placed first in the prep division. InMotion’s Kade Welcher, a senior, was named Best Soloist.

The top six groups from the daytime competition performed for the judges again in the evening. Center Point – Urbana was named Grand Champion. They were followed by Muscatine, Mount Pleasant, West Branch, Fort Madison and Anamosa.

Tall Corn Jazz Results

The two Mount Pleasant High School jazz bands competed Thursday at the Tallcorn Jazz Festival at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. They were among 17 bands in class 3A but did not place among the top three, the only positions publicly posted. However, two Mount Pleasant students were named as Outstanding Soloists. They are Drake Landau on guitar and Ethan Sexauer on violin. Both play in Jazz 1, directed by Jim DePriest.

Both jazz bands will be participating in the Coe College Jazz Summit in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, February 24 with Jazz 2 performing for the judges at 5:00 pm and Jazz 1 at 6:00 pm.

Tony Lloyd Weinreich & Elsa Delgado Weinreich

Tony Lloyd Weinreich, 81, of New London, died Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.  Ten hours later, his beloved wife, Elsa, followed him into Heaven.  Tony was born February 11, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa to Chris Jon and Barbara Copley Weinreich.  He was a graduate of Burlington High School and served in the United States Navy.  He was a member of the New London Christian Church and worked as a correctional officer at the Medium Security Unit in Mt. Pleasant until his retirement.

Elsa Delgado Weinreich, 83, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.  She was born October 31, 1938 in Camaguey, Cuba to Jose and Araceles Delgado.  Following high school, she graduated from the University of Havana and then taught kindergarten in Cuba.  Her family waited five years until they were admitted into the United States.  She worked in the dietary department at the Mental Health Institute and then the Medium Security Unit until she retired. She was a member of the New London Christian Church.  Elsa and Tony were married in Burlington; you never saw one without the other.  They enjoyed camping at Lake Wilderness where Tony pretended to enjoy fishing.  They loved spending time with their grandchildren and Elsa was quite a collector.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.  Elsa was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Enrique Delgado and her beloved husband, Tony.  They are survived by Elsa’s son Rick (Laura) Chappotin of Pensacola, Florida; their son Chris (Jessica) Weinreich of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM, March 5, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service.  Inurnment will immediately follow at Burge Cemetery, New London, with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard.  In honor of Tony and Elsa, a memorial has been established. Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

InMotion Headed for the Dutch Masters Competition

Mount Pleasant’s show choir InMotion will be among 11 high school ensembles vying for honors Saturday at the 14th Dutch Masters Show Choir Competition at Pella High School. Mount Pleasant is scheduled to perform at 3:00 pm.

Two other area schools will also be competing at Pella. Fort Madison’s prep group Crimson & Black will hit the stage at 10:00 am and Swingspan goes at 2:30 pm. Central Lee’s CENTRifucAL Force performs at 11:30 am.

The top six groups from the daytime round will square off in the finals that begin at 6:15 pm.

Mr. Tony Weinreich, 81, of New London, died Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Elsa Weinreich, 83, of New London, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.  Arrangements for Mr. and Mrs. Weinreich are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.
