Numerous area fire departments were called out Sunday night at about 8 pm to a fire on Merrimac Road. The Wayland Fire Department arrived first on scene to find two structures owned by Eichelberger Farms at 1099 Merrimac fully engulfed. The buildings along with sows and pigs were lost. Wayland Fire Chief Matt Leichty did not know yet this morning what started the fire. He did say no one was injured fighting the blaze. Mutual aid came from Olds, Salem, Washington, Winfield and Mount Pleasant fire departments. The Mount Pleasant crew sent 12 firefighters, an engine, two tankers and a command vehicle. They returned to the station at about 2 am.

Roswell William Wixom Sr., 87 of Winfield passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Veterans Medical Center in Iowa City.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Mike Johnson officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. A memorial has been established in his memory. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Daniel “Grizz” Lee Richard
Daniel “Grizz” Lee Richard, 72, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, January 21, 2022, at Savannah Heights.
Daniel was born November 7, 1949, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Oscar and Catherine (Yoder) Richard. He graduated from WACO High School in 1968. Daniel was united in marriage to Patricia Sieren on. He has lived in the Brighton and Mount Pleasant communities where he was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. Daniel served on the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years. He enjoyed Old Threshers, and spending time with friends and family.
Daniel is survived by three daughters, Melissa Diveney of Washington, Heather Waltman of Fairfield, Stacey (Mark) Chenoweth of Washington; eight grandchildren, Gabe, Brittany, and Bubba Deveney, Stephanie and Courtney Hook, Emma, Mark, and Daniel, Chenoweth; a very special friend and caretaker Linda Pohren of Mount Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia, brother Larry, triplet brothers Dean, and a stillborn.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for the Brighton Fire Department. Lottie Jane McConahay Austin
Lottie Jane McConahay Austin, 87, of Wapello, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Lottie Jane Stineman was born on July 17, 1934, in Grandview, the daughter of Simon Paul “Dyke” and Lois Alice (Harrison) Stineman. Lottie was a 1951 graduate of Grandview High School. On May 20, 1952, Lottie was united in marriage to Wayne McConahay in Grandview. Wayne preceded Lottie in death on June 3, 2001. Lottie later married Marvin Austin on February 14, 2004, at the Wapello United Methodist Church. Marvin also preceded Lottie in death on April 21, 2008. Lottie spent her working years in banking; beginning first at Muscatine Bank and Trust then Bank of America while spending eight years in California. Upon her return to Wapello, she worked as a cashier for the State Bank of Wapello for over 37 years before at last retiring. She was a member of Wapello United Methodist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, “Umicas” Club of Grandview, Red Hats Society and card club. She thoroughly enjoyed crafting and playing cards. Lottie will be remembered by many for her extraordinary talent in working with flowers; often assisting on many weddings with the making of food and flower arrangements.
Lottie will be deeply missed by her children, Dallas McConahay of Wapello, Tamara Prier of Wapello and Jona (Jeff) Taylor of Pella; grandchildren, Levi (Callie) Prier of Okalahoma and Colt Prier of Tennessee; five great-grandchildren, Blake, Creede, Lyla Jane, Haleigh and Piercen and brother, Paul Stineman of Grandview.
Lottie was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands and one brother, James Stineman.
Additional Volunteers Needed for Home Delivered Meals Routes
Milestones Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers to deliver meals in Mount Pleasant and Fairfield. Mt Pleasant volunteers have been diligent over many years in helping serve seniors through the home delivered meal program. They have covered delivery routes Monday thru Fridays for years…rain or snow. However, routes have gotten larger so another daily route has been added, rather than start a waiting list. Multiple volunteers are needed to help share and cover primarily a route on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but coverage for other days is also needed. Delivery time is approximately 10:30 -11:30 starting from the pickup point at First Presbyterian Church, Mt Pleasant And from the Community Center in Fairfield. Without additional volunteers from the community, They will need to reduce all route deliveries from 5 hot daily meals delivered Monday – Friday to 3 hot meals and 2 frozen meals, delivered M, W, F. Burlington Fire Report
At 2:28 am Friday January 21, 2022 the Burlington Fire Department responded to a
reported structure fire at 116 N. Marshall Street in Burlington. Air temperature was
negative 7 degrees. Upon arrival 4 minutes later, firefighters found flames and smoke
showing from a 2-unit apartment house. Occupants were in the process of evacuating the
house.
The 2-unit apartment house, owned by Charles McCabe, sustained extensive fire, smoke,
and water damage and is not insured. Damage estimates are still being assessed. Only one
apartment was occupied. The occupants, Jessica Beeler, Annabele Cable and six children,
were able to escape without injury. Police officers were able to keep them warm in squad
cars until other arrangements could be made. There is no renter’s insurance. The Red
Cross has been called for victim assistance.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Burlington Fire Department and is
not considered suspicious at this time.
Eleven Burlington firefighters responded to the fire and were assisted by firefighters from
West Burlington, Danville, and Mediapolis responding on mutual aid. Burlington Police,
Alliant Energy, and Superior Ambulance also assisted at the scene. Firefighters remained
on the scene until 6:25 am. There were no injuries
Vietnam War Vets to be Honored
March 29 marks an important, commemorative day for Vietnam War-era veterans, 48 years to the day after the war ended. National Vietnam War Veterans Day came about as the result of the passage of the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act that was signed into law by President Trump in 2017. We commemorate those who fought in the Vietnam War on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29. There’s no doubt that the Vietnam War was one of the most brutal. National Vietnam War Veterans Day was created to honor all the men and women who fought during its time. A special commemoration event will be held locally on March 29 at the Veterans Club in Mount Pleasant at 2 pm.
