Saturday Afternoon Fire

Mount Pleasant Fire Department was called out November 20 at 1:30 pm to a structure fire at 304 S. Cherry. According to Mt. Pleasant Fire Chief Drew Schumacher the resident was burning items in a burn barrel.  The fire spread from the barrel to a wood fence and then to the garage while the resident was at the front of the property. Fire fighters were able to continue the fire to the exterior of the garage. 10 fire fighters, and two engines were on the scene for about 45 minutes.

Two Vehicle Collision

On 11/20 just after 10:30 pm the Mt. Pleasant Police Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of West Henry and North Jefferson Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that a car operated by Kleyton Benedict of Mt. Pleasant was stopped at the stop sign on West Henry Street at the intersection of North Jefferson Street . The Benedict vehicle continued to travel westbound on West Henry Street through the intersection, failing to yield to a second vehicle operated by Ping Mei of Mt. Pleasant which was traveling southbound on North Jefferson Street. The Mei vehicle struck the passenger side of Benedict’s car causing significant damage to both vehicles. The total damage to both vehicles was estimated to be in excess of $5,000.00. No injuries were reported to Officers. As a result of this investigation, Kleyton Benedict was cited for failure to yield right of way and Failure to provide proof of financial liability.

Anna J. Chorpening

Anna J. Chorpening, 84, of Washington, passed from this life to her Heavenly Home Friday, November 19, 2021 at Halcyon House in Washington. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. Masks are recommended. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Anna’s name to Halcyon House or Hospice of Washington County.

Anna Jean (Evans) Chorpening was born April 28, 1937, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Jim and Doris (Parrott) Evans. She grew up in Danville and graduated from Washington High School. On January 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Richard Chorpening. Anna worked outside the home as well as being a homemaker and foster mom. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, spending time with family, playing Scrabble and hosting Thanksgiving dinners. However, her deep faith and her family brought her the greatest joy.

 

Survivors include her husband Richard of Washington, seven children: Mark Chorpening of Iowa City, Janie (Wendell) Davison of Riverside, Rick Chorpening of Tampa, FL, Michele “Cheli” (Jeffrey) Morgan of Iowa City, Roberta (Dan) Smith of Ottumwa, Bob (Krista) Gaal of Washington, Jim (Tina) Conwell of Wayland; 19 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one brother Jerry Evans of Reno, NV; two sisters: Nancy Evans of Merno Valley, CA, and Linda Letson of Ames, IA.

Preceding Anna in death were her parents and son Eric Chorpening.

The family would like to thank the staff at Halcyon House and Hospice for their compassionate care of Ann.

Daily Jail Count

November 22,2021

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Car Vs Deer

On November 19, at approximately 1:14AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car vs. deer collision near the intersection of 267th Street and U.S. Highway 34 near New London, Iowa. It was found that Chester Heath of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, was driving his vehicle, when a deer ran out in front of his vehicle which caused Chester to strike the deer. The vehicle sustained totaling damage with an estimated replacement value of approximately $10,000. No injuries were reported. The New London Police Department assisted with this collision.

John L. Jeffery

John L. Jeffery, 85, of Salem, died Friday, November 19, 2021 at New London Specialty Care in New London.

The funeral service for Mr. Jeffery will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Salem Friends Church, Salem, IA. Pastor Debra Savage will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem South Cemetery. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 8 PM on Friday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. The family will greet friends from 10-11AM on Saturday at the church.

John Lee Jeffery was born October 30, 1936 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of John Galer and Arion Leila (Peiffer) Jeffery. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. John was united in marriage to Myrtle Margaret Rice.

John was a longtime butcher and farmer. He processed both raised livestock and wild game. He also worked as a custodian for Iowa Wesleyan University and retired as a custodian from the former Bluebird Bus Company.

John was a member of Salem Friends Church. He enjoyed deer hunting, and raising produce in his garden, in which he delighted in sharing his bounty with friends and neighbors.

Those thankful for sharing in John’s life include his wife, Myrtle of Salem; 4 step children – Linda (Jon) Isaacman of Carter Lake, IA, Ronald (Penni) Rice of Kalona, IA, Margaret McCannon of Muscatine, IA and Robin Hulen of Clinton, IA; 1 sister – Anna Williamson of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter-in-law – Tina Rice of Hedrick; 3 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren; a niece – Ginger Hulke of Sterling, IL; 2 nephews – Mark (Rachel) Williamson of Kansas City, MO and Darrell Jeffery of South Dakota; 3 great nieces and 2 great nephews.

His parents, a stepson – Terry, a sister – Madia Arion Jeffery and a step grandson precede John in death.
