Senior Farmers’ Market Checks Are Available for 2021

Distribution will be completed by mail

As part of a national initiative, Milestones Area Agency on Aging will again issue Senior Farmers’ Market checks starting June 1, continuing through August 31—or until depleted—to low- and moderate-income seniors age 60+ for use at approved local farmers’ markets.

Recipients are awarded 10-$3 checks valued at $30. The checks can be redeemed June through October for fresh, unprepared, locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey at participating farmers market vendors. Checks cannot be used for eggs, nuts, baked goods, jelly, meat, plants, flowers, crafts, etc.

Annual income requirements are $23,828 ($19,685.66 per month) or below for a single person and $32,727 ($2,727.25 per month) or below for a married couple. Both spouses may receive checks if each person is age 60+.

Milestones is the distribution agency for seniors living in Appanoose, Clinton, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Wayne counties.

As was the case in 2020, all distribution will be conducted by mail only. Anyone eligible who received checks last year will be mailed an application automatically, they do not need to call Milestones, unless they have had a change of address. Anyone who did not receive checks last year, but meets the eligibility requirements above, can call 855-410-6222 to request an application be mailed to them. These recipients must complete the application form which includes signing a statement of eligibility. The senior MUST sign the application form before sending it back to Milestones in Davenport.

Applications can also be downloaded and printed at www.milestonesaaa.org.

Married couples need only complete one form. Proxies are allowed, meaning a person age 18 or older who can act on behalf of the senior applying for checks. However, checks will be mailed to the senior’s address.

Once reviewed and processed, checks will be mailed to qualified applicants. Please allow at least 2 – 3 weeks for processing and delivery.

She received her bachelor’s degree in 1940 from the University of Iowa where she was the commencement speaker for her class along with Nile Kinnick. She was also honored her senior year to be named Honorary Cadet Colonel of the ROTC. After college, she taught school for a few years before heading to Maryland where she worked at Bethesda Naval Hospital organizing talent shows, holiday parties and helping with letter writing for recovering sailors during World War II.  Upon returning to Iowa City after the war, she met the love of her life and after a three-month courtship she married Jack Roe, a grad student in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. In January of this year, they celebrated 75 years of marriage. During their many years together, they lived a few years in Nevada, and many years in California where she worked as his office manager.  They loved traveling and took trips to Japan, China, and Russia plus six times to Europe. Upon retirement, they lived for two years in Germany, then returned to California for a few years before coming back and settling in Iowa to be closer to family.

Nona is survived by her husband, Jack, one niece, Norma Rodgers of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and two nephews, Chuck Seberg of Iowa City, IA, and Chris (Karen Seberg) of St. Paul, MN; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Preceding her death were her parents; a sister, Wilma Eubank; a brother, Vernon Seberg; two nieces, Mary Boal and Alice Hawbaker; and one nephew, Doug Seberg.

A memorial service will be held at a later date with burial in Anita, IA. Memorials may be directed to the Finley Cemetery Association.  Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Nona and her family.
