Dale Williams

Dale Wallace Williams, 89, of Windfield passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at his residence. Services will be held at a later date.  Iowa Cremation is caring for Dale and his family.

Dale Wallace Williams was born on September 16, 1931; the son of Perry Ellis and Mary Jane (Wallace) Williams. He attended school in Frichton, IN and attended one year at Purdue University.  Dale proudly served in the United States Airforce, he was discharged early due to family farm needed him for crop harvest.  Dale married Mildred Hoffman after he returned to the farm for his dad.  They had 2 children they raised during his 3 decades of employment.  He was united in marriage to Patricia Youngman King on April 7, 1990 in Scottsdale, AZ.

Dale worked as a manufacturer representative selling fertilizer equipment in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana for 3 decades.  He owned Williams Co. in Indiana and he also did sales and service of pressure washing equipment in Oregon, Washington, and Phoenix.

Some of Dale’s hobbies included fishing, bible study, and gardening.
Dale was a member of Spring Run Church, honorary Windfield Lions Club, Indiana Masonic Lodge and Shriners and WMU Backpack board of directors.  He was best known for starting the Windfield – Mt. Union food backpack program, he organized a scrap metal pick up to sell and to Menke Metals and the money funded some of the costs of the backpack program and he worked for weeks getting signatures to send to Rep. Joe Mitchell to have highway 78 between Windfield and Morning Sun repaired.  The project was presented to Iowa DOT.  It went from not a scheduled project to Spring 2021.  Thanks to our Louisa County and Henry County representatives, the road caused him excruciating pain due to his bone cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Millie Hoffman Williams and an infant son, John.

Left to cherish Dale’s memories are his wife, Patricia Williams of Winfield; four children, Jane (Mark) Everett of Grapevine, TX, Mark (Mary) Williams of Phoenix, AZ, Cheryl King Wade of Laveen, AZ and Loretta King (Steve Brown) of Windfield; seven grandchildren, Kaitlin Everett, Maverick Williams, Sydney Wade, Chelsea Wade, Connor Wade, Mackenzie Wade (Bo) Vericolli and Bailey Lillywhite (Ben) Fear; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances Williams Shintani of Odessa, TX; and mother-in-law, Mary M. Gilbert.

Man Shot & Killed Trying to Enter a Home

Thursday night just before 9:30 Wapello County Sheriff’s office received an emergency 911 call reporting a home invasion.  The caller said a man was trying to gain entrance to the caller’s house located between Ottumwa and Agency.  Preliminary findings revealed a man did try to forcibly enter the home and was shot by the homeowner.  The intruder was taken by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospital where he died of his injuries. His identity has not been released pending notification of the family. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Single Vehicle Accident

At approximately 9:39AM on Tuesday morning February 16, 2021 the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle roll-over accident near the intersection of 140th St and Oasis Ave just south of Winfield.
An investigation into the accident showed that Auna Waters had been traveling northbound on Oasis Ave in her 2004 Pontiac Grand-AM when she lost control of her vehicle after encountering a slick spot in the roadway while negotiating a curve. Auna’s vehicle left the roadway and entered the west ditch rolling one time landing back on its wheels.
Responding to the scene was the Winfield First Responders and the Henry County Ambulance Services.

Two Vehicle Crash

At approximately 8:48AM on Tuesday morning February 16, 2021 the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was requested to investigate a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Winfield Ave and N. Beavers Dr.
An investigation conducted into the accident revealed that David Wendt of Keokuk, Iowa was attempting to leave the parking lot of the Pilot Truck Stop in his 2018 Jeep Wrangler and in doing so failed to see a Mt. Pleasant Police squad car traveling eastbound on Winfield Ave. The Patrol vehicle was operated by Sergeant, Marc McConnell. Neither person was injured as a result of the accident. Mr. Wendt was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.

Richard Winton Metzger

Richard Winton Metzger, 83, of Morning Sun, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.  A memorial has been established in his name.

Paul D. Liles

Paul D. Liles, 85, of Batavia, Iowa passed away on February 14, 2021 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born on September 27, 1935 in Davis County, Iowa to Charles and Caroline Hewett Liles. Paul started his schooling in a one room country school and completed his education at Douds High School, graduating in 1953. He started working at Harper’s Brush and then married Evelyn Benda in 1956, they had three children. Paul worked at American Chain and Cable Co. for 25 years, but his passion was working with horses, which he turned into a family business in harness horse racing.

 

Paul always valued hard work and this was exemplified in the building of the family horse racing business. While working full time at the factory, in 1967 he started his horse racing career. Caring for and training the horses every night after his day job ended; after a few years he was able to purchase a small farm and slowly transformed it into a full-time horse training and breeding facility. Paul was a prominent figure on the Iowa and Illinois horse racing circuits, with many friends and colleagues. In 2011 he was inducted to the Iowa Harness Horseman’s Hall of Fame.

 

Paul first got his interest in horse racing from his brother Dewight, then began his horse racing career raising, training, and driving in races. Key to his success, he was very protective of his elderly broodmares who produced several fine race horses that won several awards.

 

Paul served on the board of the Iowa Harness Horse Association and held memberships in the Iowa Sires Stakes Association, the Hawkeye Colt Association, and the United States Trotting Association.

 

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two sons, Gary Liles of Selma, Iowa, Robert Liles of Richmond, Virginia; a daughter, Kathy (Mark) Crane of Fairfield, Iowa; three grandchildren, Heather (Steven) Blaustein, Tiffany Liles, Kyle McFadden; two great-grandchildren, Alexis, Sofia; a brother, Gene Liles of Eldon, Iowa; two sisters, Pauline Lind of Eldon, Iowa, and Naomi Grunwald of Alamo, Texas.

 

He was preceded in death by 8 brothers, Albert, Dewight, Frank, Pardon, Everett, Emett, Bill, David; and 4 sisters, Sarah Talbott, Mary Liles, Rachel Greene, and Ruth Boliou.

 

A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2021 with family present to greet friends from 4 – 6:00 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home – Keosauqua. A private family burial will take place at a later date at Fell Cemetery in Libertyville, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family to be designated later. Richard W. Metzger

Richard W. Metzger, 83, of Morning Sun, died Wednesday, February 17,

2021 at Great River Medical Center Emergency Department.

Marilyn Jo Schneider

Marilyn Jo Schneider, 76, of rural Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her home.

 

Marilyn was born on February 6, 1945 in San Diego, California, the daughter of Cecil and Essaline (Scott) Hamilton. On June 29, 1968, she married Robert Andrew Schneider at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 5, 2020.

 

Survivors include her mother: Essaline Rooney of Fort Madison; six children: Rose (Brad) Hills of Fort Madison, Iowa, Roger (Sonja) Schneider of West Point, Iowa, Anita (James) Hatfield of Fort Madison, Iowa, Andy (Amanda) Schneider of Monmouth, Illinois, Steve (Heather) Schneider of Unionville, Missouri and Shelly (Mac) Schneider of Donnellson, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Kayla Hills, Reann, Breann and Tristin Schneider, Stephanie (David) Corns, Dominic Destiny, Daelynn Schneider, Cody Schneider and Clayton Geerdes; one great grandchild: Aneira Corns; twin sister: Carolyn Barnes of Fort Madison, Iowa; two brothers: William (Sandy) Hamilton of Burlington, Iowa and Michael (Jean) Hamilton of Fort Madison, Iowa; one brother-in-law: James J. (Suki) Schneider of Burlington, Iowa.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert; father: Cecil; step-father: Eugene Rooney and sister: Colleen Hamilton.

 

Marilyn was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She worked at American Paper Co. and helped her husband on the farm. She enjoyed flowers, hummingbirds, gardening and canning. Marilyn loved Christmas, Elvis Presley and most of all, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

 

Friends may call from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2021 at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point.

 

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point with Father Joseph Phung officiating.

 

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

 

A memorial has been established in her memory for West Point Fire and Rescue, Lee County Hospice or PAW Animal Shelter.
