Edward Hinkle

Edward D. Hinkle, 65, of rural Morning Sun, died Sunday, June 14, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A memorial service for Mr. Hinkle will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 20 at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Reverend Mark Youngquist will officiate. Burial will be in the Swedesburg Cemetery. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9 PM on Friday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM Friday evening.

Edward Duane Hinkle was born November 23, 1954 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of John Edward and Lavonne (Sandburg) Hinkle. He graduated from WACO High School in 1974.

Ed was a longtime millwright for Agri Builders and later Millwright Contractors, involved in all types on agricultural construction, especially grain bins and grain elevators. He later worked for Prairie Ag Co-op in Winfield and area farmers. Later on, he was a corn sorter for Pioneer Seeds.

Ed was a member of Swedesburg Ev. Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He served over 20 years in the US Army Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge. In his spare time, Ed was quite the “tinkerer”, with a wide assortment of tools, mechanical and electrical items. He enjoyed mowing the lawn and assembling jigsaw puzzles, many of which he framed in frames he made himself. Ed was an organ donor and able to share the gift of life with others.

Those thankful for sharing in Ed’s life include his children – Christopher (Bethany) Hinkle of Morning Sun, Jeremie (Tina) Hinkle of Mt. Union, Leainteen (Taylor Robinson) Hinkle of Burlington, Elizabeth Hinkle of Morning Sun and Rebecca McCandless of Keokuk; a sister – Brenda Gott of Winfield and a brother – David Hinkle of Canton, IL; 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was expecting the birth of his second great grandchild.

Ed’s parents precede him in death.

West Point Sweet Corn Festival Cancelled

West Point Sweet Corn festival will be cancelled for this year August 13-16, 2020. The Sweet Corn Festival Committee met with the West Point Community Club and discussed the pros and cons of having the festival this year. With the implications created by COVID-19 and the current guidelines and taking into consideration the ultimate safety of the entire community; the club voted that the event should be cancelled. The committee said this decision does not come easy because local businesses are affected as well as the carnival. Since the event relies heavily on volunteers, safety comes before cost. The committee the safety of the community is what matters most and is what drove this unfortunate decision.

Elsie Miller

Elsie H. Miller, 97, of New London, died Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.  She was born March 17, 1923 in Yarmouth to Bert Antone and Minnie Melvina Broecker Fischer.  On June 7, 1942, she married Howard T. Miller in New London.  He died June 3, 1994.

She was a 1940 graduate of New London High School and was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of Eastern Star, was Worthy Grand Matron in 1979, held other state and local offices and was a member of Arema Club.  Elsie was a homemaker; a member of Birthday Club; enjoyed playing cards and games with her family and friends, especially pinochle, and was a member of two card groups; loved cooking and baking;  attending anything that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved in; and she grew beautiful roses which she loved to give away.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her children; Ron (Nancy) Miller, Susan (Jerry) Prottsman, Cynde (Bob) Lemley all of New London and Evan Miller of Valdosta, Georgia; ten grandchildren; and twenty three great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Shirley Miller; siblings, Glenn Fischer, Eva Carman, Ruby Fischer, Alice LaVine, Jennie Mickelson, Nellie Jackson and Charles “Pete” Fischer, and an infant sister at birth.

The funeral service for Mrs. Miller will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Maurie Campbell officiating with Eastern Star services.  Burial will follow the service at Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union.  Due to guidelines put in place during the Covid-19 health crisis, there will be no visitation.  A memorial has been established for the Black and Gold Backers and New London Presbyterian Church. Traffic Stop Results in Several Charges Involving Juveniles

On June 14th, 2020, at approximately 5:33PM the Henry County Sheriff’s Office performed a traffic stop near the 5th Street/Dogwood Avenue intersection in Trenton. The vehicle was determined to be operated and occupied by three juveniles.

A subsequent search of occupants and the vehicle was performed. Multiple drug related items and a firearm were located during this time and seized. One occupant was determined to have an active juvenile pick-up order in effect as well. Multiple charges were filed and two occupants were released into custody of guardians. The other occupant was taken into custody and transported to Juvenile Detention.

As a result of this incident and investigation charges were filed of/including: Controlled Substance Violation (class D felony), Carrying weapons (Aggravated misdemeanor), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Serious Misdemeanor), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Simple Misdemeanor), and Driving under Suspension (Simple Misdemeanor).

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was additionally assisted by the Iowa State Patrol during this incident.

Bill Sickels

Gerald William “Bill” Sickels, 72, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday. June 19, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethlehem Cemetery rural Eldon, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Clark officiating.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 6 to 8 that evening.  A memorial has been established in his memory.

Pole Barn and Garage Fire

The New London Fire Department was called out Sunday afternoon at about 3 pm to the 2600 block of Quincy Avenue.  Chief Brad Helmerson said a pole barn and garage were basically gutted by the blaze.  The fire did not reach the house on the property but some of the siding melted from the heat.  No one was hurt.  Mount Pleasant Fire was called for mutual aid sending 6 fire fighters to help the 11 from the New London Department. Crews were on the scene for about 2 hours.

Driver Suffers Fatal Medical Emergency

The Lee County Sheriff’s Department investigated a car that went off the road as a  result of a fatal medical emergency.  Carol Reed of Ft. Madison was driving south near the intersection of Hwy 218 and Primrose Road.  Apparently, she suffered a medical problem leading to her death.  The vehicle left the roadway, traveling onto the shoulder and coming to rest in the grass alongside the road.  Reed was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner’s office personnel.
