According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Lake Darling Beach in Washington County is one of 13 beaches statewide recently deemed “unsafe” for swimming due to high E. coli levels.
From late May through early September, DNR conducts weekly water quality monitoring of state beaches to determine if they’re safe for swimming and recreational use—testing for E. coli bacteria and harmful algal toxins that pose a health risk to swimmers.
High E. coli levels indicate possible fecal contamination, which can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness, skin rashes, and ear infections. Health officials recommend avoiding swimming until bacteria levels return to a safe standard.
