Gail D. Hallowell

Gail Dean Hallowell, 77, of New London, died Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Gail was born July 16, 1947 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Wayne Dale and Lena Mae (Pickard) Hallowell. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1966.

Gail was called to the service of his country during the Vietnam War. He was inducted into the US Army on October 19, 1966 at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He was a chemical equipment technician stationed with the 647th Maintenance Company of the US Fourth Army. He was honorably discharged as a SP4 at Fort Hood, Texas on October 23, 1969.

On December 28, 1971 in Oquawka, IL, Gail was united in marriage to Florence Lorraine Stearns. The couple made their home in Ankeny where Gail worked for the John Deere Corporation. They returned to Mt. Pleasant where Gail worked for CECO Building Systems.

In his younger years, Gail enjoyed working in his garden. After retirement, Gail liked to attend city council meetings and spend time with his granddaughters. Gail was known in his family for his rigid ritual of what and where to eat supper.

Those thankful for sharing in Gail’s life include his 2 children – Angel Jacobs and her husband Tim of New London, and Shane Hallowell of Salem; his 3 granddaughters – Emily Jacobs (Ben Nickel) of Mt Pleasant, Brenna Jacobs (Mason Shelledy) of New London and Loren Jacobs of New London; his brother – Leo Hallowell of Burlington; his sister – Dana Hocker of Brookport, IL and an aunt and uncle – Roberta and Harold Fraise of Danville, IA.

Gail is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence, who died Monday, September 6, 2010 at their home in New London; an infant son – Jason Dean Hallowell; a sister – Janet Lindstrom and an infant brother – Gary Lee Hallowell.

A private family celebration of life will be held. Interment of Gail and Florence’s ashes will be held later in Oakland Mills Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for a decision to be made later.

The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting Gail’s family with arrangements.
