Iowans are being encouraged to check the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt website to see if they have unclaimed money or property waiting for them.
Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee recently told the Henry County Board of Supervisors that his department had found claims through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. He encouraged other county departments to check as well, noting they could have funds waiting to be claimed.
The program is available to individuals, businesses and organizations.
Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith says the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt had a record-breaking fiscal year, returning more than $38.2 million in cash and share value to Iowans during Fiscal Year 2026. The program paid out more than 53,000 claims.
Unclaimed property can include forgotten or lost checks, bank accounts, utility refunds and the contents of safe deposit boxes.
Treasurer Smith says one in seven Iowans has funds in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
You can search for your name, business or organization at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov. The service is free, and the state says it is Iowa’s only legitimate source of unclaimed property.
