Prep Softball Rankings- The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their second rankings for the season and there was a major shakeup after the first two weeks of play.
Southeast Warren stayed atop the rankings after a 9-1 start to the season, but conference foe Martensdale-St. Marys fell from 2nd to 8th after a 2-0 loss to Wayne in Class 1A. Wayne was previously unranked but sprung up to 7th in this week’s edition. Newell-Fonda’s undefeated 7-0 start leapfrogged Remsen St. Mary’s to be ranked 2nd this week. Three teams fell out of the top 15: Highland, West Central Valley, and St. Ansgar. Logan-Magnolia went from unranked to 11th and Exira-EHK is now ranked 13th after a 4-0 start to the season.
In Class 2A, Iowa City Regina clutches on to the #1 spot despite a slow start out the gates with a 3-2 record. Central Springs hurdled Lisbon to be ranked 2nd this week. There were juxtaposing movements in the rankings this week as South Hardin moved up 8 spots and Interstate 35 fell 9 spots. Interstate 35 was ranked 5th last week but a four-game losing streak brought their record to a meager 3-6 on the season and 14th in the rankings. South Hardin rounded out the rankings last week, but a 7-0 start to the season propelled them up to 7th. Cardinal, Akron-Westfield, and Logan-Magnolia all fell out of the top 15. Alburnett is now ranked 12th after not being on the list last week. Lousia-Muscatine following a 4-1 start to the season is now ranked 13th and Ridge View rounds out the top 15.
Class 3A had the most amount of stability with the top 4 unchanged with Williamsburg on top with an 8-0 record. Mount Vernon’s 8-0 loss to Solon caused them to slide from 5th to 7th in the rankings. After being ranked 8th last week, Benton clings on to the top 15 at the last slot with a 4-7 record. The Bobcats suffered 5 losses in a row to Assumption and Clear Creek Amana. PCM, Algona, and Atlantic all tumbled out of the top 15. Center Point-Urbana went from unranked to 10th. West Lyon is now ranked 12th and Chariton is ranked 14th after a 5-0 start to the season.
Dallas Center-Grimes is ranked #1 in Class 4A with Fort Dodge remaining in 2nd. North Scott and Carlisle tumbled down the list despite just one loss on the season. North Scott went from ranked 3rd to 7th and Carlisle went from 4th to 6th. Burlington climbed up two spots in the ranking to be slotted in 9th after a 5-1 start to the season. After a 3-2 start to the season, Fairfield was knocked out of the top 15 and replaced by Western Dubuque who is ranked 10th. ADM suffered a fall of 8 spots as the Tigers are now ranked 14th after their most recent string of three losses.
Class 5A has a new top team in West Des Moines Valley after taking down the former #1 team Waukee Northwest 5-4. Beyond that change the rankings were shuffled around with no serious movement. Three teams did fall out of the top 15: Dubuque Hempstead, Iowa City Liberty, and Waukee. Des Moines Lincoln is ranked 11th after being previously unranked. Urbandale took 12th and Sioux City East was slotted in 15th.
