Hoyt C. Griffin

Hoyt C. Griffin, Jr. 81, of Morning Sun passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Wapello Specialty Care.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Solid Rock Baptist Church.   Funeral Service will be 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021 at the church.  Following the funeral service, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church.  Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021.   A memorial has been established in Hoyt’s name.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Morning Sun are caring for Hoyt’s arrangements.

Hoyt Carter Griffin, Jr. was born on December 6, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Hoyt C., Sr. and Thelma (Caperoon) Griffin.  Hoyt graduate from Morning Sun High in 1958 and went on to serve his country in the United State Army.  He attended Northern Iowa Teachers College and studied Journalism at The University of Iowa.   In 1963, he was united in marriage to Denise Mau in Davenport.  He later married Linda Cowdrey at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun in 1986.  Hoyt worked at The Pentagon, Secret Service and other Federal agencies climbing his way to high ranks before his retirement in 1994.   He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello where he served as a Deacon and also gave Sermons.   Hoyt was very involved in Boy Scouts and the Morning Sun Lions Club, holding the office of District Governor of the Lions Clubs.

Hoyt will be deeply missed by his wife, Linda; children, Hoyt Carter “Butch” Griffin III of Bolingbrook, Illinois and Christina Griffin-Artman of Charlotte, North Carolina; step-daughter, Lynne Zelinsky of Champaign, Illinois and grandchildren, Matthew Carter Griffin and Violet Griffin.

 

Hoyt was preceded in death by his father, Hoyt C. Griffin, Sr.; his mother, Thelma McKee; his 1st wife, Denise Griffin; grandson, Travis Nichols and aunt, Velma Orr.
