Mount Pleasant Man Arrested After Altercation With Police

A Mount Pleasant man is facing multiple charges after a disturbance at a local motel Wednesday evening allegedly escalated into a struggle with police.

According to a criminal complaint, officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded around 5:17 p.m. on June 24 to a report that a woman had threatened to stab 31-year-old Steven Ray Downs during an argument over bicycles and a chair placed on a motel sidewalk.
Court documents state witnesses told officers the argument continued with yelling and name-calling after they attempted to defuse the situation. The woman involved in the altercation was arrested separately.

Police say when officers attempted to speak with Downs, he questioned their requests, backed away, and allegedly resisted arrest. According to the complaint, officers took him to the ground after he allegedly turned toward an officer in a threatening manner. Officers reported using compliance strikes before handcuffing him.

Downs was transported to the Henry County Jail after first being taken to Henry County Health Center for evaluation of back pain. He was medically cleared and returned to the jail.

Authorities say officers suffered bodily injuries during the struggle and were evaluated by medical staff.

Downs is charged with aggravated misdemeanor interference with official acts causing bodily injury and simple misdemeanor disorderly conduct. The charges are allegations, and Downs is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
