College Football: Petras, Iowa Close Spring Drills

Iowa City — Spencer Petras is in the early lead for the starting quarterback gig at the University of Iowa this fall.

Petras and the Hawkeyes closed spring practices Saturday with an open practice at Kinnick Stadium.

The 6’5′ senior from San Rafael, California is in a hotly contested race with Alex Padilla and redshirt freshman Joe Labas.

Petras has started 19 games the past two seasons while Padilla started three games last season while Petras was injured.

Labas has yet to appear in a game.

“All three guys are growing. All three are different discussions. But they’re all growing. Joe is behind the other two in terms of knowing what to do. This was really helpful for him” said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

Iowa will open their 2022 season on Saturday, September 3rd when they take on South Dakota State in Iowa City.

Boys’ Golf: Mount Pleasant Fourth at Washington Invite

The Mount Pleasant boys’ golf team finished fourth at Saturday’s Washington Invite.

The host Demons won the tournament with a low score of 321.

Clear Creek-Amana was second with Pella Christian third.

Williamsburg, Oskaloosa and Columbus Junction rounded out the seven-team field.

Washington sophomore Roman Roth was the meet medalist with a 4-over 74.

Mount Pleasant was paced by by Nick Matheney, who finished in third shooting a 79.

Reece Kempker tied for 4th carding an 82.

Also playing for Mount Pleasant was Reece Coffman (93) and Nate Dismang (96).

The Panthers will be back on the links tomorrow when they travel to the Oskaloosa Invitational.

Tee time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The team will be golfing at Edmundson Golf Course.

College Softball: Iowa Wesleyan Splits with Knox

Iowa Wesleyan split their weekend series with Knox on Saturday, winning game one 11-1 falling in game two 8-2.

In game one the Tiger offense belted out 19 hits on Prairie Fire pitching.

Former New London prep Kara Krieger was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and a double.

Julia Hill had three hits, including a double, and three runs scored.

Abby Dameron and Jordan Morthland combined to limit Knox to just one run.

Dameron, who hails from Danville, allowed three hits and a run over two innings.

Morthland worked four scoreless innings, yielding just four baserunners while striking out one.

In game two, Knox scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back for the 8-2 win.

Two Wesleyan errors aided the Knox offense as none of the runs allowed by Tiger pitching were earned.

Haiden Molter pitched five innings allowing just one hit while striking out three.

Nicole Shirrell had two hits in the game two loss, driving in one.

Former Fort Madison prep Ivy Geerdes had the other RBI.

The split moved Wesleyan to 5-24.

College Baseball: Wesleyan Qualifies for Postseason Tournament

The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team will be one of four teams to play in the Continental Athletic Conference tournament in May.

The announcement was made by Vice President of Advancement and Athletics Derek Zander at last Thursday’s Wesley’s.

The tournament will be played at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The four team tournament will begin on Saturday, May 7th.

Iowa Wesleyan, under head coach Blake Beaber, has made a second half about face upping their ledger to 20-26.

They have played one of the most difficult NAIA schedules in the country.

Mary Kathryn Diers, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 22, 2022 at Parkview Nursing Home in Wayland, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church at Germanville with Rev. John Meyer officiating.  Following the service there will be a time of food and fellowship.  Burial will follow in the New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery rural Lockridge.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to WACO Music Boosters, New Sweden Cemetery or First Augustana Lutheran Church in her memory.

Chase ends in Crash and Arrest

On April 22, 2022 at approximately 11:36p.m. a deputy with the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle for an equipment violation at US Highway 34 and Beaverdale Rd. The vehicle failed to stop and attempted to elude law enforcement eastbound on US Highway 34 while reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. The suspect vehicle entered the Burlington City Limits and drove north in the southbound lanes of traffic near Roosevelt and West Ave. before swerving back into the correct lanes. The suspect drove east on Division St. and continued to elude law enforcement while speeding and driving through multiple stop signs.

At S. 6th St. and Market St. the suspect was northbound when he swerved into the southbound lanes of traffic and towards a marked law enforcement vehicle that had its emergency lights and sirens on. The suspect continued to elude law enforcement throughout downtown and North Hill. Eventually, the suspect drove westbound on Mt. Pleasant St. and struck a vehicle at Mt. Pleasant and Spiegel St. causing disabling damage to the suspect vehicle. There were no injuries reported from the accident.

The suspect was placed under arrest and identified as Izaak Edmund Krieger-Coen, age 29, of West Burlington, IA. A bag of suspected marijuana was located on Krieger-Coen. He was transported to the Des Moines County Jail and charged with Speeding, Felony Eluding, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Fail to Obey Stop Sign, Driving Wrong Side of 2-Way Highway, Reckless Driving, and No Insurance. His bond was set at $5000.

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Burlington Police Department, West Burlington Police Department, Eighth Judicial District High Risk Unit, and the Iowa State Patrol.
